On Tuesday, October 2 at 7:30 PM, in honor of Banned Books Week, the Summit Free Public Library will host a showing of ?Left Bank Bookseller?, a short film written and directed by Summit filmmaker Lisa Reznik. ?The bookseller of the title is Sylvia Beach, a remarkable woman who defied the censors and published James Joyce?s controversial novel Ulysses. ?After the showing, Ms. Reznik will discuss the making of the film.
?Left Bank Bookseller? is a historical drama set in Paris between the World Wars. ?The short film begins when Adrienne Monnier enters the bookstore and lending library, Shakespeare and Company, run by Sylvia Beach from Princeton, New Jersey.
Monnier ran La Maison des Amis des Livres on the left bank of Paris, and with her help, Sylvia Beach opened the first English language bookshop nearby.? Her shop, Shakespeare and Company, became a favorite meeting place for the writers of the Lost Generation including Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, and James Joyce. Beach offered these writers encouragement as well as books.
When prohibitions against obscenity were making it impossible for James Joyce to publish Ulysses, Sylvia Beach surprised Joyce, and even herself, by offering to publish his revolutionary novel.?? ?Left Bank Bookseller? explores the challenges faced by James Joyce, and his often sarcastic wife, Nora, to bring out his book.? It is also the love story between Ms. Beach and her literary soul-mate, Adrienne Monnier, the woman who advised Sylvia on how to publish the novel that made her bookshop famous.
September 30 ? October 6, 2012, is the 30th anniversary of Banned Books Week, which celebrates literature and the freedom to read.? Ulysses is one of many classic novels which have been banned or challenged.? A selection of frequently-challenged books will be on display (and available for borrowing) throughout the week.
The program will be held in the Ernest S. Hickok Meeting Room at the Library.? It is free and open to all.? No pre-registration is required, but seating is limited.? First come, first seated.? Doors open 30 minutes before the beginning of the program.? ?
