HBT: No-hitter exclamation point to Pirates' collapse

The Pirates appeared to hit rock bottom on Wednesday, when they were shutout primarily by a pitcher they gave up on waivers to the Mets prior to the start of the season (Jeremy Hefner pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits, before rookie Jeurys Familia finished up). As it turned out, that was still just a warmup.

On Friday evening, the Pirates were no-hit by a guy named Homer. A guy who had one career shutout in 109 major league starts. And you?ll never guess who that had come against. In fact, both of Homer Bailey?s complete games had come versus the Pirates. He?s now 8-2 with a 2.51 ERA in 12 starts against the Pirates and 30-31 with a 4.81 ERA in 98 starts against everyone else.

The loss was the Pirates? 81st of the season, which guarantees they won?t snap their record skid with a winning season. They could still conceivably win five straight and finish at .500 for the first time in 20 years. But, let?s face it, that?s not happening. The Pirates are 6-20 in September after going 11-17 in August.

As for Bailey, he deserves plenty of credit. He fanned 10 and faced one batter over the minimum. His postseason rotation spot was still in doubt as of a couple of weeks ago, but he had moved well ahead of Mike Leake of late even before tonight?s showing. He?s taken advantage of a very weak schedule of late, but 13-10 with a 3.75 ERA in 204 innings is nothing to sneeze at. His no-hitter tonight was the Reds? first since Tom Browning threw a perfect game in 1988. Incredibly, it was the first no-hitter versus the Pirates since the Cardinals? Bob Gibson threw one in 1971.

In Changing News Landscape, Even Television is Vulnerable
Trends in News Consumption: 1991-2012

Overview

The transformation of the nation?s news landscape has already taken a heavy toll on print news sources, particularly print newspapers. But there are now signs that television news ? which so far has held onto its audience through the rise of the internet ? also is increasingly vulnerable, as it may be losing its hold on the next generation of news consumers.

Online and digital news consumption, meanwhile, continues to increase, with many more people now getting news on cell phones, tablets or other mobile platforms. And perhaps the most dramatic change in the news environment has been the rise of social networking sites. The percentage of Americans saying they saw news or news headlines on a social networking site yesterday has doubled ? from 9% to 19% ? since 2010. Among adults younger than age 30, as many saw news on a social networking site the previous day (33%) as saw any television news (34%), with just 13% having read a newspaper either in print or digital form.

These are among the principal findings of the Pew Research Center?s biennial news consumption survey, which has tracked patterns in news use for nearly two decades. The latest survey was conducted May 9-June 3, 2012, among 3,003 adults.

The proportion of Americans who read news on a printed page ? in newspapers and magazines ? continues to decline, even as online readership has offset some of these losses. Just 23% say they read a print newspaper yesterday, down only slightly since 2010 (26%), but off by about half since 2000 (47%).

The decline of print on paper spans beyond just newspapers. The proportion reading a magazine in print yesterday has declined over the same period (26% in 2000, 18% today). And as email, text messaging and social networking become dominant forms of communication, the percentage saying they wrote or received a personal letter the previous day also has fallen, from 20% in 2006 to 12% currently. There has been no decrease in recent years in the percentage reading a book on a typical day, but a growing share is now reading through an electronic or audio device.

While print sources have suffered readership losses in recent years, television news viewership has remained more stable. Currently, 55% say they watched the news or a news program on television yesterday, little changed from recent years. But there are signs this may also change. Only about a third (34%) of those younger than 30 say they watched TV news yesterday; in 2006, nearly half of young people (49%) said they watched TV news the prior day. Among older age groups, the percentages saying they watched TV yesterday has not changed significantly over this period.

The changing demographics of the TV news audience are particularly noticeable in the audiences for local and cable news. The overall share of Americans saying they regularly watch local television news has slipped from 54% in 2006 to 48% today ? and in that regard it remains one of the news sources with the broadest reach. But the number of 18-to-29 year-olds regularly watching local news has fallen from 42% in 2006 to 28% today.

Over this same period, the regular audience for cable news also has aged. In 2006 and 2008, there were only modest age differences in regular cable news viewership. But in the current survey, more than twice as many of those 65 and older as those younger than 30 say they regularly watch cable news (51% vs. 23%).
CNN?s Losses Continue

Among individual cable news outlets, CNN?s regular audience has declined since 2008. Four years ago, nearly a quarter of Americans (24%) said they regularly watched CNN; that has fallen to 16% in the new survey.

Regular viewership for both Fox News and MSNBC has not changed much in recent years.
About one-in-five Americans (21%) say they regularly watch Fox News, while about half as many (11%) say they regularly watch MSNBC.
Print on Paper: Going, Going ?

While Americans enjoy reading as much as ever ? 51% say they enjoy reading a lot, little changed over the past two decades ? a declining proportion gets news or reads other material on paper on a typical day. And there is new evidence in the survey of a shift in reading to electronic platforms.

In the new survey, only 29% say they read a newspaper yesterday, with just 23% reading a print newspaper. Over the past decade, the percentage reading a print newspaper has fallen by 18 points (from 41% to 23%). Somewhat more (38%) say they regularly read a daily newspaper, although this percentage also has declined, from 54% in 2004. Figures for newspaper readership may not include some people who read newspaper content on sites that aggregate news content, such as Google News or Yahoo News.

Over the past decade, there have been smaller declines in the percentages of Americans reading a magazine or book in print (six points and four points, respectively) than for newspapers.

Just as online newspaper readers make up an ever-greater share of all newspaper readers, so too are more magazine readers and book readers abandoning the printed page for tablets, digital books and other devices. In the current survey, 9% of those who said they read a magazine yesterday, and 20% who read a book, read them in a non-print format.

And substantial percentages of the regular readers of leading newspapers now read them digitally. Currently, 55% of regular New York Times readers say they read the paper mostly on a computer or mobile device, as do 48% of regular USA Today and 44% of Wall Street Journal readers.

By contrast, most readers of such magazines as Harpers, the Atlantic and the New Yorker still read them in print. But even for these magazines, nearly a quarter of regular readers (23%) say they read them mostly on a computer or digital device.
Online News: More Mobile, More Social

While traditional news platforms have lost audience, online news consumption has been undergoing major changes as well. Nearly one-in-five Americans (17%) say they got news yesterday on a mobile device yesterday, with the vast majority of these people (78%) getting news on their cell phone. Among smartphone owners, nearly a third (31%) got news yesterday on a mobile device.

The second major trend in online news consumption is the rise of news on social networks. Today, 19% of the public says they saw news or news headlines on social networking sites yesterday, up from 9% two years ago. And the percentage regularly getting news or news headlines on these sites has nearly tripled, from 7% to 20%.

In part, this is a byproduct of the explosive growth in social networking. In the current survey, 41% of all adults, including 47% of online adults, say they used Facebook or another social networking site yesterday. (For more on social networking, see surveys conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project.)

On top of the increase in social network use, the poll finds that news is also more prevalent on social networking sites. The share of users who saw news there yesterday nearly doubled from 19% to 36% between 2010 and 2012.

The increasing use of these sites for news has not just occurred among young people. In fact, those in their 30s are nearly as likely as those 18 to 24 to say they saw news or news headlines on Facebook or another social networking site yesterday (30% vs. 34%). And about a quarter of adults in their 40s (23%) saw news yesterday on social networks, up from just 8% in 2010.

The two trends in online news consumption ? growing numbers getting news via mobile devices and the increasing use of social networks ? are complementary. Overall, 55% of Americans access the internet on a mobile device, such as a cell phone or tablet; among this group, 30% say they saw news on social networking sites yesterday. That compares with just 9% of Americans who are online but do not access the internet on a mobile device.
Getting News on Twitter

While news gathering is very common among Twitter users, the overall reach is limited because the audience remains relatively small. About one-in-ten Americans (13%) ever use Twitter or read Twitter messages. By comparison, more than half (54%) ever use other social networking sites, such as Facebook, Google Plus or LinkedIn.

As a result, far fewer people get news on Twitter than on other social networking sites. Just 11% ever see news on Twitter, while 3% got news there yesterday. Nearly half of adults (47%) ever get news on Facebook and other social networking sites and 19% got news on one or more of those sites yesterday.

Nonetheless, Twitter users are increasingly getting news on the site and sharing news stories with others. Overall, 83% of Twitter users ever see news on Twitter and 26% saw news there yesterday; both percentages are up considerably from two years ago. And most Twitter users (59%) tweet or retweet news headlines on Twitter. About the same percentage of users of Facebook and other social networks (61%) use those sites for sharing news or news headlines.

Plane going to Everest region crashes, killing 19

KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) ? A plane carrying trekkers to the Mount Everest region hit a bird and crashed just after takeoff Friday in Nepal's capital, killing the 19 Nepali, British and Chinese people on board, authorities said.

The pilot of the domestic Sita Air flight reported trouble two minutes after takeoff and appeared to have been trying to turn back, said Katmandu airport official Ratish Chandra Suman. The crash site is only 500 meters (547 yards) from the airport, and the wrecked plane was pointing toward the airport area. Suman said the plane hit a vulture just after it took off, causing the crash.

Suman said he could not confirm whether the plane was already on fire before it crashed. Cellphone video shot by locals showed that the front section of the plane was on fire when it first hit the ground and that the pilot apparently had attempted to land the plane on open ground beside a river.

The fire quickly spread to the rear, but the tail was still in one piece at the scene near the Manohara River on the southwest edge of Katmandu. Villagers were unable to approach the plane because of the fire, and it took some time for firefighters to reach the area and bring the fire under control.

Soldiers and police sifted through the crash wreckage looking for bodies and documents to help identify the victims. Seven passengers were British and five were Chinese; the other four passengers and the three crew members were from Nepal, authorities said.

Large numbers of local people and security forces gathered at the crash site. The victims' charred bodies were taken by vans to a hospital morgue.

Relatives of the Nepalese victims cried as they gathered at the Tribhuwan University Teaching Hospital in Katmandu, where all the victims' bodies were taken.

The weather in Katmandu and surrounding areas was clear Friday morning, and the plane was one of the first of the day to take off from Katmandu's Tribhuwan International Airport. Other flights reported no problems, and the airport remained open and operated normally after the crash.

The plane was heading for Lukla, the gateway to Mount Everest. Thousands of Westerners make treks in the region around the world's highest peak each year. Autumn is considered the best time to trek the foothills of the Himalayan peaks.

Airline officials identified the British crash victims as Raymond Eagle, 58, Christopher Franc Davey, 51, Vincent Kelly, 52, Darren Kelly, 45, Timothy Oakes, 57, Stephen Holding, 60, and Benjamin Ogden, 27.

The Nepalese passengers were identified as Kumar Marshyangdi Magar, Lakpa Noru Sherpa, D. Rai and M.K. Tamang. The crew members were pilot Bijay Tandukar, co-pilot Takashi Thapa and hostess Ruju Shakya.

China's government-run Xinhua News Agency identified the Chinese victims as Wu-Hui, Qian-Mingwu, Wu-Lin, Wang-Jhihua and Yang-Chen.

Nepal, with its poor-quality mountain roads and network of little airports, has a long history of small plane crashes. Including Friday's crash, there have been at least six crashes of small planes since October 2008.

The crash follows an avalanche on another Nepal peak Sunday that killed seven foreign climbers and a Nepali guide.

Italy's Monti pleases investors, but politics to come

ROME (Reuters) - Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti's declaration that he would be willing to serve a second term if asked may have reassured international investors, but there is no way around the treacherous waters of Italian politics.

It was no accident that Monti, an economist brought in last year to run an emergency government of technocrats, made his announcement in New York; just a short taxi ride from Wall Street, he was comfortably far from the fevered atmosphere in Rome, where manoeuvring for the 2013 election is in full swing.

Business leaders and financial investors fretting about what may follow have long been keen on what the press has dubbed "Monti bis", or Monti-2, a second dose of the apolitical cabinet appointed by President Giorgio Napolitano when Silvio Berlusconi quit at the height of the euro zone debt crisis.

But the main political parties, preparing for an election due no later than April, made it clear that they would not be excluded from the process of selecting the next leader.

Pier Luigi Bersani, head of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), said he would not stand for any attempt to "pre-write the election result and make the vote a waste of time".

Former prime minister Berlusconi's first response was more cautious. "There are elections first," was all the conservative would say on Thursday, immediately after Monti's declaration.

Bersani's cool reaction was hardly surprising given that the PD is leading in most opinion polls and he could become prime minister himself. But his words concealed a more complex reality for a political system badly in need of the kind of credibility enjoyed by Professor Monti, a former European Commissioner.

With a vote due no later than April, the main parties are caught in a stalemate of their own making, unclear about who will lead them into the election, what policies they will promote or even what electoral law will apply on polling day.

An uninterrupted wave of scandal, most recently at the local centre-right government in the region around Rome, has badly tarnished the already battered image of politicians in general, leaving Monti far more popular than any of the party leaders.

The 69-year-old has ruled out standing as a candidate himself and stressed that he would only serve if elections produced no clear winner, leaving Italy vulnerable to the kind of financial market turmoil that brought him to power last year.

He has insisted that Italy will not need help from the International Monetary Fund or the European Union to get through the crisis.

But with Italy's public debt set to top 126 percent of gross domestic product this year, the economy in recession and youth unemployment over 35 percent, the threat is never far off and the political uncertainty is not helping.

PRESIDENT MONTI?

According to a survey by the SWG polling institute published on Friday, the PD would be the biggest party with 26 percent of the vote, ahead of Berlusconi's centre-right People of Freedom (PDL) with 15 percent.

"Broadly speaking, the PDL looks out of it. It doesn't look like winning or even playing a decisive role," said SWG vice president Maurizio Pessato. "The PD looks like at least being able to create a coalition around itself."

The party faces a primary battle in November to choose who will lead it into the election - Bersani or the young mayor of Florence, Matteo Renzi. Neither is keen to be upstaged by Monti before their race has even started.

A PD official close to Bersani said that the party would only agree to Monti serving as prime minister if there were something close to a hung parliament, with no clear majority, but he added that other options were possible.

"Becoming prime minister after the elections isn't the only thing that Monti could do. He could also become president," the party official said.

That would allow Monti to avoid front-rank politics but still play the kind of behind-the-scenes role that current head of state Napolitano has played throughout much of the crisis.

But according to the SWG poll, the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement of comedian Beppe Grillo would be the second largest force with 19 percent of the vote, while 49 percent of those surveyed were undecided or determined not to vote.

The odds against a PDL victory may help explain a relatively conciliatory attitude it has taken lately, despite a hostile tone toward the austere economic policies implemented by Monti with the blessing of Italy's European partners.

Speaking of Monti's remarks in New York, the PDL's Franco Frattini, a former foreign minister, said: "We have to take account of this important declaration and then it will be up to the voters to decide if a government can be formed with a sufficiently strong majority."

The party which dominated Italian governments over the past decade has been left hanging until Berlusconi decides whether or not he will lead it into the election. But with a heavy defeat in prospect, an apolitical prime minister seems to be increasingly attractive to the party's leaders.

Oil prices march upward for second day

BANGKOK (AP) ? Hopes that the global economy might see some improvement after Spain announced far-reaching steps to fix its ailing economy helped keep oil prices on the upswing for a second day.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was up 61 cents to $92.46 per barrel at late afternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.87 to finish at $91.85 per barrel on the Nymex on Thursday.

Brent crude gained $1.28 to $113.29 on the ICE Futures Exchange in London.

"Risk appetite improved yesterday on the Spanish budget," analysts at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said in a market commentary. "With the Spanish budget paving the way for an official bailout request ... renewed concern about the Eurozone crisis has eased."

After three straight days of declines, oil posted gains in Asia on Thursday, helped by expectations the People's Bank of China will soon take more steps to stimulate the world's No. 2 economy. Spain later announced severe budget cuts intended to convince the world that it can meet deficit-reduction targets.

Still, oil analyst Stephen Schork said he expects "high volatility" as oil contracts for October expire.

In other Nymex trading:

? Heating oil rose 2.1 cents to $3.172 per gallon.

? Wholesale gasoline gained 1.2 cents to $3.156 per gallon.

? Natural gas rose 0.1 cent to $3.306 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Is there a gene for motherhood?

ABC News' Juju Chang reports:

Rory Dalven is a 3-year-old girl who has not been out of diapers that long, but she already knows something about changing them.

Her sister, Saorise, is a 5-year-old kindergarten student who already knows what she wants to be when she grows up, a mom.

Their inclinations to nurture and feed baby dolls and play with items like strollers at such a young age could be something they were born with, and something that will definitely affect their futures, researchers at Rockefeller University in NYC say.

In a study with mice, the researchers determined that a single gene exists that could be responsible for motivating mothers to protect, feed and raise their young.

The study's findings mean there could be a valid explanation for why some women seem born to be maternal figures, while others come across as detached or cold or even completely not interested when it comes to children.

Some are calling the discovery the "mommy gene."

Moms who spoke with ABC News were divided on the possible link to motherhood, with some saying it makes sense and others saying it is not that simple.

"I can always remember playing with dolls and always thinking, 'I'm going to be a mom,'" one New York City mother said. "I do have friends who say they just don't have it in them to want a baby or to take care of them."

"On a good day, I'm incredibly nurturing," another mother said, raising the argument that maternal instinct might have more to do with circumstance than genetics. "On a bad day, it's a little harder."

One blogger who leads a parenting website worried that the gene study might present mothers with another reason to look harshly on themselves, and other moms.

"I worry that it could almost invite us to look at someone that does something differently than we do and say, 'She doesn't want to breast-feed. She doesn't have the 'mommy gene,"" said Melissa Lawrence, co-founder of CloudMom.com.

Sept. 28: A Circular Relationship Between Political and Economic ...

President Obama?s probability of winning the Electoral College fell slightly in Friday?s FiveThirtyEight forecast, from 83.9 percent to 82.7 percent on Thursday.

Although Friday?s polls were a bit more equivocal than on some recent days, the shift mainly came because of a decline in the FiveThirtyEight economic index, which continues to have some influence on the forecast.

A government report on Friday showed a decline in real personal income in August, one of the economic data series that the forecast model uses. Furthermore, the July personal income figures, which had initially looked quite positive, were revised downward to show slower income growth.

Real personal income is up 2 percent from one year ago, a below-average number, but one that roughly matches other economic figures. However, it had been flat to negative for much of 2011, and it has increased only at about the growth rate of the population over the whole course of Mr. Obama?s term.

Another economic data series that the model uses, personal consumption expenditures, was also published on Friday and showed sluggish growth in consumer spending after adjusting for inflation.

Numbers from the manufacturing sector have also been poorer lately, and this month?s monthly jobs report was mediocre.

And yet, consumer confidence was up sharply this month across several surveys, reaching a four-month high in The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan?s monthly measurement of it.

What accounts for the discrepancy? Some of it might be in the timing: the reports on consumption and personal income covered August, whereas the consumer confidence surveys are quicker to update and instead reflect numbers for September. And there have been some recent positives in the economic data, like tentatively better numbers from the housing sector.

Politics undoubtedly also plays a part, however. We often talk about the important role that the economy plays in the election. But Americans perceptions of the economy are also colored by their political views.

Gallup, which tracks numbers on economic confidence daily, found a substantial increase in consumer confidence that was unmistakably timed to the Democratic convention. Most of the increase, however, was caused by Democrats, who now view the economy much more positively. The numbers also improved modestly among independent voters, but there was no improvement among Republicans.

It seems that Mr. Obama and Bill Clinton were able to persuade some voters in their speeches at the convention that there are silver linings in the economy. It is the most persuasive explanation for how subjective perceptions of the economy improved at a time when objective measurements of it had worsened.

But could improved consumer confidence actually translate into improved consumer spending, which could help stimulate the economic recovery? Or do measures of consumer sentiment become unreliable predictors of actual economic behavior once we?re this deep into an election cycle?

Some academic studies of this question find that improved consumer confidence actually may affect consumer behavior ? even if the initial impetus for the change was rooted in political factors. Democrats might be going out to dinner a few more times this month ? even if Republicans don?t.

On the other hand, Gallup?s tracking of self-reported consumer spending has not seen much of a change since the Democratic convention. Self-reported assessments of spending are not always reliable. But we?ll have to wait several more weeks until September data on retail sales is available, giving us a harder measure of how consumers are actually behaving.

These ambiguous relationships between political attitudes, economic attitudes and actual economic behavior are complicated. It isn?t necessarily so straightforward to say what constitutes the economic ?fundamentals,? when those economic variables may be influenced in part by the political attitudes of consumers and businesses, along with fiscal and monetary policy.

However, I am especially wary of using sentiment-based measures like consumer confidence in elections analysis, and forecasting models that have done so have had extremely poor results when applied to real data. If you had an elections model based on horse-race polls and consumer confidence right now, you?d run the risk of double-counting Mr. Obama?s gains, since in this case the consumer confidence figures seemed to have been influenced by electoral politics more than the other way around.

Friday?s Polls

Speaking of silver linings: Friday?s poll numbers were a bit more hopeful for Mitt Romney, at least as compared to his extremely poor numbers over the past week or so. A number of swing state polls congregated at a lead in the low- to mid-single digits for Mr. Obama, but we weren?t seeing as many polls with him ahead in mid- to high-single digit leads.

Mr. Obama?s lead also declined by one point in the RAND Corporation?s national tracking poll, and by two points in the Ipsos online tracking poll, and in a poll published by United Press International. It held steady at six points, however, in the Gallup national tracking poll.

Our ?now-cast,? which looks at the polls alone and does not account for the economic data, held steady on Friday, suggesting that it would be premature to make too much out of these shifts. A couple more days? worth of polls like this, however, and Mr. Romney might be able to make the case that Mr. Obama?s momentum has abated some.

The smart money is that Mr. Obama?s standing in the polls will erode some between now and Nov. 6, especially if we continue to see the mediocre economic data that we did on Friday. It is probably too late in the election cycle for the economic data alone to prevent Mr. Obama from being favored in the race, unless the numbers are poor enough to give voters the sense that the economy has reached some new state of acute crisis. But it could soften the ground a bit for Mr. Romney down the stretch run if he can find some other ways, like the debates, to also make gains.

Benefits of ETF Investing | ETF Trends

ETFs are appealing to investors for various reasons. As recent price wars rage on, there are many other factors that make these funds desirable to investors besides low cost.

?Exchange traded funds have gained immense popularity in the recent past, given their holistic investment approach and tax efficiency, coupled with flexibility and ease of investing. ETFs can be viewed as the ultimate asset allocation instrument providing investors a ready made portfolio of stocks or fixed income securities or both,? Eric Dutram wrote for Zack?s. [The Shifting ETF Landscape]

A broad group of investors are finding ETFs appealing as they study their current portfolios of mutual funds and single stocks, Christian Magoon wrote on Nasdaq.com.

The access that ETFs give retail investors is one reason that these tools are appreciated by investors. The easy investment to niche corners of the market and sectors is a trait that ETFs have, at a reasonable cost. Plus, asset classes, bonds, commodities, futures contracts, currencies and grantor trusts can all be accessed with a targeted ETF.

Transparency of holdings is another favorable characteristic of ETFs. The transparency is also available in real time, not just at the close of a trading day. The daily transparency that an ETF has can help investors with asset allocation and avoid over or under exposure to a certain stock or sector. [Sector Investing with ETFs]

Diversification is another area that an ETF satisfies. The ability to give an investor a well-rounded basket of stocks tracking a sector or country is just one example. Other areas that ETF diversification can assist with is portfolio construction, proper asset allocation and risk mitigation. By investing in a basket of numerous companies, if one stock does not do so well, the downside is eased because there is less exposure to the failing company.

The benefits of ETFs extend beyond this list, and most investors will not realize them until they have invested in them. While low cost is a huge advantage of using ETFs, it is certainly not the only one. [Schwab Takes the Lead in ETF Price War]

LG Display countersues Samsung over OLED patent infringement

Samsung 55-inch OLED TV at CES

The strained relationship between the two tentpoles of Korea's tech industry is starting to wear, now that LG Display has counter-sued its local rival over OLED patents. Earlier this month, Samsung filed for an injunction accusing its frenemy of stealing secrets, but LG is claiming instead that it's the victim. If successful, Lucky Goldstar would seek a ban on devices including the Galaxy S III, Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Note on the pair's home turf -- so, yeah, this one looks like it's going to run and run.

NDP Children and Family critic demands change to - Cknw.com

Shane Woodford | Email news tips to shane.woodford@corusent.com
9/26/2012

The NDP are condemning the provincial government for aborting the fall sitting of the legislature after the latest update on child poverty in BC.

?Children and Family critic Claire Trevena says the report shows politicians need to be working on solutions in Victoria.

?She calls a disproportionately large number of first nations kids affected by child poverty a "huge problem."

?"Which underlines why we need to have a province wide poverty reduction plan the Minister has heard directly from some of these communities that have a pilot project and these communties are saying it doesn't work the way you have it because the Ministery of Children and Families is involved we have to have a province wide approach."

?Trevena calls the deaths of 101 children either in foster care or recieving services by the ministry, a tragedy.

?"There is clearly something going very wrong when a child in care dies we have to really provide the best protection possible right the way through from birth all the way through teen and into young adulthood and I think we let our kids down there aren't the supports in place needed there are lots of pressures in many families facing severe poverty."

?Trevena says sweeping changes, and lots of them, is exactly the problem.

?"I think that one of the things that is really needed in this area is stability there has been too many sweeping changes I think that this is one of the things that has been a real problem for the Ministry of Children and Family Development that it has gone from one extreme to the other and back I think what we need is we need stability and we need to work on the root causes of why many times children end up in care and that is often times because of poverty."

?She says the province needs to work on root causes for child poverty.

Tycoon offers $65M to man who woos gay daughter

Cecil Chao Sze-tung is Hong Kong's perennial playboy. Call him the city's Hugh Hefner, minus the pajamas and add a pair of shades.

Never married, real estate and shipping tycoon Chao, 76, has been a staple of the Hong Kong tabloid and social rags since the 1970s. For over 40 years he's proudly paraded what seems to be an endless supply of female arm candy in front of the flashing bulbs.

Tales of his romantic dalliances are tabloid staples. He once boasted about having slept with over 10,000 women. Just last year the septuagenarian Chinese Casanova, as to prove his virility has not been dashed by time, posed in a magazine photo spread surrounded by young bikini-clad models.

He has fathered three children from three different women.

He has thumbed his nose at the institution of marriage. Until this week.

Chao's respect for a traditional marriage was prompted by his daughter Gigi, 33, being quoted recently in the Beijing press saying she had married her long-time girlfriend Sean Eav earlier this year in Paris. Hong Kong currently still does not legally recognize same-sex marriages.

Rather than accepting his daughter's decision, Chao has announced a dowry-bounty of sorts: HK$500 million ($65 million US Dollars) to the man who can woo his lesbian daughter away from her wife.

"I don't mind whether he is rich or poor. The important thing is that he is generous and kind-hearted," Chao told the South China Morning Post while dismissing reports of his daughter's same-sex marriage as being "false."

"Gigi is a very good woman with both talents and looks. She is devoted to her parents, is generous and does volunteer work," he said.

His offer has been met with an enthusiastic response around the world. Within a day, Gigi's Facebook and Twitter accounts were inundated with requests and followers.

On her public facebook feed, Gigi wrote: "where do all these people come from? Jerusalm(sic)? Ethiopia? Istanbul? Ridiculous."

Meanwhile on Gawker.com, a shirtless reader - allegedly a Brazilian Algae-researching-mountain-climber - is interested. He wrote the website, asking for help to connect: "I think this girl is gorgeous and as I love women I am willing to fly to hk to meet with her. Can you please let me know how to arrange a meeting with them?"

Speaking to the SCMP Wednesday, Gigi Chao laughed off her father's marriage bounty, telling the newspaper she found it all "quite entertaining."

In the interview the younger Chao would not confirm or deny the rumors of her marriage and her sexual orientation.

"I'm not afraid to admit anything. But I do want to respect my parents," she told the paper.

Much of Hong Kong society maintains fairly conservative views on homosexuality. Gigi Chao acknowledges this telling the paper, "It's still an uncomfortable issue for many people."

When asked by the SCMP whether her father disapproved of her alleged same-sex marriage because his "pronounced heterosexuality," Gigi simply replied: "He loves the attention."

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women who underwent genital cutting as young girls may be at increased risk of physical, sexual or emotional abuse from their husband, a study of women in Mali suggests. The study, of nearly 7,900 women, found that 22 percent of those with genital mutilation said they'd been physically abused by a husband or male partner. That compared with 12 percent of women who'd never been subjected to the procedure. It's estimated that more than 130 million women worldwide have undergone genital mutilation, also known as female "circumcision. ...

Novel materials become multifunctional at ultimate quantum limit

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? A University of Arkansas physicist and his colleagues have examined the lower limits of novel materials called complex oxides and discovered that unlike conventional semiconductors the materials not only conduct electricity, but also develop unusual magnetic properties.

Jak Chakhalian, Jian Liu, Derek Meyers and Benjamin Gray of the University of Arkansas and John W. Freeland and Phillip Ryan of the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory present their ideas in Physical Review Letters.

"Contrary to what we have today in modern microelectronics devices based on silicon, here in a single quantum well, which is just four nanometers thick, we now have several functionalities in one device layer," said Chakhalian, professor of physics and holder of the Charles and Clydene Scharlau Chair in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. "Engineers can use this class of material to devise new multifunctional devices based on the electrons' spin."

The microelectronic materials -- semiconductors -- used in today's computers, have almost reached the lower limitation for size and functionality. Computers run on several semiconducting devices layered together in the very smallest of spaces, known as quantum wells, where nanoscale layers of a semiconducting material are sandwiched between two nanoscale layers of a non-conducting material. However, the researchers found that by using complex oxides with correlated electrons confined to quantum well geometry, they added a new dimension to the mix.

The new structure is based on the concept of correlated charge carriers, like those found in rust, or iron oxide. In rust, if one electron does something, all of the other electrons "know" about it. This phenomenon, called correlated electrons, does not exist in silicon-based materials that run today's computers, televisions, complex medical equipment, power cell phones and keep the electricity on in homes.

"In normal materials used today, electrons don't care about the movement of one another," Chakhalian said. "We can predict their properties almost on the 'back of an envelope' with the help of powerful computers." However, with correlated materials, the calculations for the movement of one electron involve tracking the interactions with billions of electrons, and this is beyond modern theory capabilities.

Chakhalian and his colleagues went down to four atomic layers of a correlated complex oxide material based on nickel and sandwiched it in between two layers of non-conducting oxide material based on aluminum. Unlike the semiconducting materials, the complex oxide structure revealed the unexpected presence of both electronic and magnetic properties.

These multiple properties in a single material may allow the semiconductor industry to push the limits of current conventional computers and develop multiple functions for a single device, possibly allowing everyday electronics to become smaller and faster than they are today.

Chakhalian is a professor in the Institute for Nanoscience and Engineering.

Is Commercial Real Estate A Good Investment? | Eric Chua : Life ...

A compilation of tips, on how you can buy or sell commercial real estate, can help a beginner get into the market. This article is filled with useful tips designed for beginners who need to learn the basics of real estate transactions.

Before you begin your commercial real estate search, develop a clear understanding of the needs of your business. Know just what type of office space that you are going to use. If you think your business will get bigger, consider purchasing more space than is currently required; doing this may save you money down the road.

Consider the good tax benefits if you are thinking about purchasing commercial properties for investment purposes. In addition to depreciation benefits, many investors enjoy tax deductions for interest expenses. But, an investor may also be liable for taxes on other income; income realized on paper, but not actually received in the form of cash. Take this possibility into account when drawing up an investing plan.

TIP! Before buying a piece of commercial property, decide what you intend to do with the property once you buy it. Do you plan on having your own business on the property or do you plan on leasing it? As you prepare to seek out a new commercial property, you should first set very specific goals and requirements.

Keep in mind the larger the better when thinking of a permanent location for a business. Since you do not want to have to purchase a different property anytime soon, it is important to invest in something that allows your business space to get bigger.

Commercial Loan

If you are taking out a commercial loan, you must pay for the appraisal yourself. The bank won?t let you make use of it later. Therefore, to protect yourself and keep your commercial loan on track, order the appraisal yourself.

TIP! Once you have signed a new lease for a property, your next priority should be your rent strategy. The effectiveness of your strategy will have a significant impact on the success of your new investment.

Buying commercial real estate is much more complicated and time-consuming than buying a home. You need to understand, you have to be diligent in order to get a profit.

Creating your own real estate blog can help to establish you as an expert in the field. This can help you find people to buy what you have for sale or even those who will lease space.

Establish what you need before searching in commercial real estate. Identify which features in a commercial property are high value to you, and make a list. This can include the number of floors, units, square feet, the building layout, and anything else that is important to you.

TIP! Each property has a certain lifetime. Ignorance may be bliss at first, but avoiding this fact could mean you lose a lot of money toward property upkeep, wiping out any savings you might have gotten from the initial purchase.

If you are hunting among multiple properties, make a checklist for touring sites. Get the responses from the first round of proposals, but make sure the property owners are aware of this before proceeding. Do not be shy about mentioning that you?re also looking at other properties that day. It could even get you a good deal.

Talk to a tax expert before you buy any property. You adviser can help you calculate the overall cost you will incur in making the purchase, and what portion of the income deriving from the property will be taxable. By adopting the adviser?s counsel and expanding your search, you can find an area for expansion and building that will not endanger your current tax liability.

Smaller Issues

TIP! If you are new to commercial real estate investing, you should learn how to manage one investment type at a time. Zero in on your favorite type of property and focus solely on that type, for now.

A letter of intent should be simple to begin with, covering only the larger issues. Once an agreement on those terms are made, you can begin addressing the smaller issues. This will make negotiations less tense and make gaining agreement on the smaller issues easier to complete.

Find out how the firm that you are thinking of working with measure results. Learn how they determine how much space is needed, the property selection criteria, the negotiation methods, and other details that can affect you. Understanding where they stand in regards to these things before you sign with this company will be a wise decision.

Commercial Loans

TIP! Try borrowing some of the tenets of feng shui for use with your properties. Two primary fundamentals of feng shui are the concepts of open spaces and de-cluttering, and these are both attractive to certain buyers.

There are substantial differences between residential and commercial loans, one being that commercial loans require a larger down payment relative to the property?s value. Look for lenders who have the best rates and keep your personal credit and your business line of credit in good standing for the best chances of qualifying for a loan. Also, make sure to keep your ear open for the best investments.

The above collection of tips should have given you enough information to feel confident about commercial real estate transactions. These tips were put together in the hopes of increasing skill and knowledge, and improving your ability to either buy or sell in the commercial real estate

Obama: Disputed game means NFL needs regular refs

(AP) ? The embarrassing NFL referee saga and the disputed call that gave the Seattle Seahawks a victory over the Green Bay Packers on Monday night has reached the campaign for the White House, with President Barack Obama deeming it "terrible" and declaring it was time to get regular officiating crews back on the job.

"I've been saying for months we've got to get our refs back," Obama said as he returned to the White House from an appearance before the United Nations. In a tweet that went out under over his initials, Obama said: "NFL fans on both sides of the aisle hope the refs' lockout is settled soon."

In a rare moment of agreement with Obama, GOP running mate Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin native, also said it was time to bring back the "real refs." But he used the episode on the football field to argue a partisan case for kicking the president out of office.

"It reminds me of President Obama and the economy," Ryan said in Cincinnati. "If you can't get it right, it's time to get out. I half think that these refs work part-time for the Obama administration in the budget office. ... They're trying to pick the winners and losers, and they don't even do that very well."

Seattle won 14-12 over Green Bay after referees ruled a Seattle receiver caught the ball amid a pile of bodies in the end zone on the game's last play. The NFL conceded that a Seattle penalty in the course of the play went uncalled and cost the Packers the victory, but the league upheld the catch itself and the Seahawks' victory. Legions of football fans watched the play and the referees' call in disbelief, and buzzed about it all day Tuesday.

Typically, Obama, a diehard Chicago Bears enthusiast, is not one to wish the rival Green Bay Packers well.

But besides being an avid sports fan, Obama recently has redoubled efforts to win in the Packer's home state of Wisconsin. His campaign recently started airing ads in the state and Obama held a rally Saturday in Milwaukee, his first visit to the state since February.

The NFL locked out the officials in June after their contract expired. The league has been using replacement officials, who have come under increasing criticism over the way they handled some games.

White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One that Obama watched the Monday night game and "thinks there was a real problem with that call."

"He said that what happened in that game is why both sides need to come together, resolve their differences so that the regular refs can get back on the field so we can start focusing on a game that so many of us love rather than debating whether or not a game was won or lost because of a bad call," Carney said.

Obama said in a phone interview Tuesday with The Des Moines Register that he doesn't blame the replacement refs.

"They've been put in a tough situation," the president said. "But the fact is this is a fast, tough game to control. And it doesn't make sense to me for a league that's been so successful not to want to put their very best out there."

Facebook Privacy Issues - Business Insider

There was a big Facebook privacy scare today, when reports broke that old private messages were appearing on users' timelines.

The company responded to the reports saying, "A?small number of users raised concerns after what they mistakenly believed to be private messages appeared on their Timeline. Our engineers investigated these reports and found that the messages were older wall posts that had always been visible on the users? profile pages. Facebook is satisfied that there has been no breach of user privacy."

The Next Web originally reported?that?Facebook had accidentally published private messages on some users' timelines from the years 2007, 2008, 2009, and maybe even earlier.? Reports of this "mistake" were first discovered in France, where?Metro France?broke the news.

If you think this has happened to you the easiest fix is to click on the pencil at the top right of the message and make sure to select "Hide from timeline."

Understanding how salamanders grow new limbs provides insights into potential of human regenerative medicine

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Based on two new studies by researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, regeneration of a new limb or organ in a human will be much more difficult than the mad scientist and supervillain, Dr. Curt Connors, made it seem in the Amazing Spider-man comics and films.

As those who saw the recent "The Amazing Spiderman" movie will know, Dr. Connors injected himself with a serum made from lizard DNA to successfully regrow his missing lower right arm -- that is, before the formula transformed him into a reptilian humanoid.

But by studying a real lizard-like amphibian, which can regenerate missing limbs, the Salk researchers discovered that it isn't enough to activate genes that kick start the regenerative process. In fact, one of the first steps is to halt the activity of so-called jumping genes.

In research published August 23 in Development, Growth & Differentiation, and July 27 in Developmental Biology, the researchers show that in the Mexican axolotl, jumping genes have to be shackled or they might move around in the genomes of cells in the tissue destined to become a new limb, and disrupt the process of regeneration.

They found that two proteins, piwi-like 1 (PL1) and piwi-like 2 (PL2), perform the job of quieting down jumping genes in this immature tadpole-like form of a salamander, known as an axolotl -- a creature whose name means water monster and who can regenerate everything from parts of its brain to eyes, spinal cord, and tail.

"What our work suggests is that jumping genes would be an issue in any situation where you wanted to turn on regeneration," says the studies' senior author, Tony Hunter, a professor in the Molecular and Cell Biology Laboratory and director of the Salk Institute Cancer Center.

"As complex as it already seems, it might seem a hopeless task to try to regenerate a limb or body part in humans, especially since we don't know if humans even have all the genes necessary for regeneration," says Hunter. "For this reason, it is important to understand how regeneration works at a molecular level in a vertebrate that can regenerate as a first step. What we learn may eventually lead to new methods for treating human conditions, such as wound healing and regeneration of simple tissues."

The research team, which included investigators from other universities around the country, sought to characterize the transcriptional fingerprint emerging from the early phase of axolotl regeneration. They specifically looked at the blastema, a structure that forms at a limb's stump.

There the scientists found transcriptional activation of some genes, usually found only in germlime cells, which indicated cellular reprogramming of differentiated cells into a germline state.

In the Development, Growth & Differentiation study, the research team, led by Wei Zhu, then a postdoctoral researcher in Hunter's laboratory, focused on one of these genes, the long interspersed nucleotide element-1 (LINE-1) retrotransposon.

LINE-1 elements are jumping genes that arose early in vertebrate evolution. They are pieces of DNA that copy themselves in two stages -- first from DNA to RNA by transcription, and then from RNA to DNA by reverse transcription. These DNA copies can then insert themselves into the cell's genome at new positions.

A few years ago, Fred Gage, professor in the Laboratory of Genetics at the Salk Institute, discovered that LINE-1 elements move around during neuronal development, and may program the identities of individual neurons.

"Most of these copies appear to be 'junk' DNA, because they are defective and can never jump again," says Hunter. But all mammals, including humans, still have active LINE-1 genes, and the salamander, whose genome is 10 times larger than a human's, contains many more.

Active LINE-1 retrotransposons can keep jumping, and that was true in the developing blastema where LINE-1 jumping was dramatically switched on. But in the researchers' companion study, in Developmental Biology, they found that PL1 and PL2 switch off transcription of repeat elements, such as LINE-1. "The idea is that in the development of germ cells, you definitely don't want these things hopping around," says Hunter. "The mobilization of these jumping genes can introduce harmful genomic rearrangements or even abort the regeneration process."

In fact, when the researchers inhibited PL1 and PL2 activity in the axoloti limb blastema, regeneration was significantly slowed down.

"The need to switch on one set of genes to stop other genes from jumping just illustrates how amazingly difficult it would be to regenerate something as complex as a limb in humans," Hunter says. "But that doesn't mean we won't learn valuable lessons about how to treat degenerative diseases."

The work was supported by grants from the National Cancer Institute, the U.S. Public Health Service, and an Innovation Grant from the Salk Institute.

Thanks for sending in this video, AN and I will post your note about it in the next post. I know it's been floating around and caused a big brouhaha, and I've seen it before. I will give my views on it in my next essay because I have a lot to say about it.

And since I've presented myself as "mother Evia," some of you want me to comment on some of the issues in popular culture that disturb you. LOL! ?I don't mind doing this sometimes.?

But first, I want to share this excellent ?Yahoo ARTICLE?because as more bw become involved in vetting non-bm, more knowledge is, of course, more helpful.?

There is much common sense in this entire article about what it takes to make a quality choice in relationship partner AND make a relationship work. For upwardly mobile bw, there are many gems contained in the article about what it's going to take to get to the next level and stay there--especially if you want to share your life with a man inside a harmonious, long term relationship.

Much contained in this article is indirectly a key prerequisite for raising emotionally balanced, successful children.

Smarter bw know that it's much easier to raise successful, emotionally healthy children if you have a loving, compatible partner. DUH! ?That's why they're called a partner. I didn't want to get married just to have a man in the house or another income; I wanted a loving and loveable PARTNER, which denotes compatibility.

Smarter people also know that if you have a loving and loveable, compatible partner, it's much more likely that you will be healthier, acquire and keep wealth (for all in the family), etc. For those who want to argue about this, check out the research on these topics and keep in mind that I'm talking about high probability vs low probability here; I'm not talking about absolutes.

EXCERPT:

"For a stable marriage, get a good education first
?A follow-up study conducted by three of my graduate students ? Paul Park, Elizabeth Matt, and Chad Carrick ? found that occupations that had brighter, better-educated employees had lower divorce rates, and that divorce rates were lower for higher-paying jobs than for lower-paying jobs,? continues Dr. Aamodt. ?Thus, it appears that it is not the job itself, but the characteristics of the employees that are related to occupational divorce rates.? It might sound like a no-brainer, but now we have scholarly confirmation: a little extra money in the family coffers does lead to more stable marriages. So if you want to be happy for the rest of your life, make a bright and educated person your husband or wife."

For upwardly mobile bw, the content of this quote is like "DUH"! LOL!

As I think more about it, I think that some people have common sense but are simply afraid to use it. I say that because as I read the article, I asked myself: What is it about most of this entire article that any sensible adult over 25 doesn't know?

Having said that, I do know that many AA women have been discouraged from even looking at the possibility of choosing higher quality or compatible mates by others around them who often point out to them that if a man is trying hard to do better, then that is good enough. SMH

If you're an AA woman, that's probably a pretty common message around you.?

But that, in itself, is a background issue that is not shared by all AA women. In my background, that may have floated around me, but I NEVER received that message from my mother, grandmother, or my FATHER. The message I got from all of them was just the opposite.

My father? ?Some of you have asked me about him. My father was a hard-working man. He did more than 'try hard;' he delivered. He had very little formal education but he was a good reader and had a memory like a steel trap. LOL! ?Despite Jim Crow, he learned a skill which enabled him to earn very well, and he supported me. He had his issues after he got out of the military (due to injuries), but he still protected and supported me. I can't ever recall him raising his voice to me. He was playful with me, used to bite my ear when I was a small girl, smiled at me a lot, and probably was his most gentle around me. As I got older, he would talk to me a lot about his life when we were together and I knew he was being earnest. I always felt he was proud of me.

I didn't spend as much time with my father because he was always off ?working, but he conveyed his values to me. All three of these people were key shapers of my values.

They conveyed to me that 'trying hard' may be admirable and noble, but that's not good enough. I had to do more than 'try hard.' I had to accomplish or actually reach significant goals, without coming up with excuses. Anything that I've done or not been able to do is my responsibility. I take FULL responsibility because I was raised that way. I was shaped that way.

You will need to sue my mother, father, and grandmother for shaping me to be this way.

I've heard all sorts of excuses from many folks about why they can't do this, that, or the other, but to me those ARE just that: EXCUSES.

This is why I never allowed my sons to say what they can't do. I've made them just admit that they didn't try hard enough or long enough, or in the right way. In other words, they didn't stay on the right path, long enough.

So I've expected a comparable level of accomplishment from my mate. This does NOT mean that I'm compatible with every man or even most men who have a comparable level of accomplishment.

However, levels of accomplishment feeds into compatibility in relationships.

For ex., if a woman who is a rocket scientist who has a cute smile (or whatever other cute physical trait) marries a man who is a well-paid construction worker with big muscles, why would either of them think the relationship will be satisfying or last for long??????? This is the part that mystifies me. I wonder why people choose each other as mates, based on purely or mostly surface traits. Yes, he may have big muscles, have a good income, and she may have a cute smile, but WHY would any sensible person think that muscles and smiles will carry a relationship through all the bumps in the road that a long-term relationship will undergo.

I know a LOT about long-term quality relationships. That's a benefit of my age, my broad-ranged experiences, the type of men I mingled with and chose for husbands, the quality of my marriages, my common sense, or in general, the life I've lived--inside my intercultural ex-marriage and now inside my interracial marriage with Darren.

Also, aside from my life inside my relationships with these wonderful men I've shared my life with, I have girlfriends and gal pals who represent various other ethnic and racial groups. Naturally, I mingled with many African women, white women, worked with women from all kinds of backgrounds for years, but one of my best friends from college is a Hispanic woman and another good friend I met about 18 years ago is an Iranian woman. All of these relationships have given me a chance to mingle inside other diverse cultures and ethnic groups and observe what goes into the much longer marriages they have.

Trust me, NONE of these women (that I know) from other cultures choose men the way too many typical American women do. These women from other groups virtually ALWAYS choose men based on how COMPATIBLE they are with the man--across the board. That compatibility depends almost totally on the commonalities in their backgrounds, their VALUES, their goals, their views about life, etc. A woman who is a rocket scientist and a man who is a construction worker are not going to be compatible 99.999% of the time--EVEN IF--he makes 15 times as much money as she does. DUH!

What are they going to talk about???? Oh, okay, let's see. Maybe they can talk about what was on TV last night or a new movie coming out. Or???????? ?Yeah, he may be able to crack some jokes that will make her laugh, but is that enough to sustain a long relationship? Let's face it--their values and views about life are going to be very different because a large part of who a person is springs from what they do every day and what they've done a lot of for the past several years.

In other words, you ARE what you DO. And in some cases, this can be a problem. This is why I knew I could never be interested in a long term relationship with a cop--though I did date a policeman when I was in my 20s. He was a nice guy, but I felt edgy with him. LOL! He talked about some of his work and YUK! ?I knew that I didn't want a man to come home and look at me through the lens that he'd been viewing life most of his waking hours that day. Police people deal with deviants. Their work involves identifying and controlling deviant people. However, if I had also been a cop, then we would have had a LOT to talk about and much more in common. Maybe.

I say maybe because some people are fortunately more complex than that. ?

Darren and I have similar educational levels, but our educational majors are far apart. Yet, we grew up in a similar manner, with similar VALUES, have various common interests, have personalities that mesh. So we feel free to be who we are with each other and we support each other in being who we naturally are. Darren virtually ALWAYS supports me in doing whatever I'm doing and he encourages me to do it. He always has my back. If it's something that we must do together and have a disagreement, we always talk until we reach a consensus. Neither of us wants to be happy at the other's expense.

I've noticed that many wives and husbands or women and men and women in relationships will take advantage of the other one if it enables them as individuals to get what they want. This creates an ongoing gender war or low-intensity conflict because even IF you can get over on another person, that persons knows that you did that to them. So, they will resent you and it's only a matter of time before they will retaliate. If they can't retaliate, they will simply resent you. Resentment is one of the worst feelings to have in a relationship. It's a relationship-wrecker. For sure!

Anyway, Darren also always tries to get rid of my worries and doubts and even tells jokes to make me feel silly about worrying or doubting. He hates it when I worry unneccessarily. OMG! That's when his temper flares. He'll say things like: "What is that worry based on?" Or: "You just pulled that worry out of thin air!"?

And yeah, I have to usually admit that I did just 'create' something to worry about. LOL!

I've figured out that he gets very upset about this because as a man, he feels that a part of his role is 'problem solver' so when I worry about things, he feels that I've created an imaginary problem. And how can he solve an imaginary problem??? LOL!

So, I've learned to maybe only say a word or two about any of my imaginary problems. LOL! And imaginary problems usually just dissolve into thin air anyway.

But, I'll stop here for now. Please stay tuned for my views on the above video.
