Dozens of pets wake up in cooler home | KXAN.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Dozens of pets are waking up Tuesday morning in their new homes.

The Austin Humane Society waived all adoption fees because the air conditioner is broken in their North Austin headquarters.

A long line of people waited at the building to give the animals a new home, and more than 70 animals were adopted Monday.

"The response has been tremendous," said Frances Jonon, with the Austin Humane Society. "We're so grateful to the community to adopt the animals but also for supporting the organization. They brought us fans and ice and anything that we could need to keep the animals and the staff and volunteers comfortable."

Austin Humane Society officials said staff and volunteers worked tirelessly to keep the 219 animals that were in-house on Sunday cool and comfortable, setting up fans and putting ice into their water bowls. There were 34 adoptions on Sunday after adoption fees were waived.

Austin Humane Society officials said it will cost $12,000 to repair their air conditioning unit, and they are looking for donations.
