The before photo showed the two sprawled out on a bed, with their heads joined just above the hairline to form what appeared to be a single, solid unit. Facing the World said that separation took place in stages at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital, with two operations in May, the insertion of tissue expanders in July and the final separation on Aug. 15.

"Within days the twins were back on the general ward interacting and playing as before," the charity said. Its executive coordinator, Sarah Driver-Jowitt, predicted that the girls' parents ? who haven't been named ? may soon return home "with two healthy, separate girls."

Although rare, operations to separate twins linked by their heads aren't unheard of. In 2004, a team of doctors at New York's Montefiore Children's Hospital separated Filipino twins in four major surgeries that took place over 10 months. In 2003, surgeons in Dallas successfully separated 2-year-old Egyptian twins joined at the head.

One of the first successful operations to separate craniopagus twins took place in 1956, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

Factbox: Romney, Perry spar at Republican debate (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Republican presidential hopeful Texas Governor Rick Perry and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney sparred over who did a better job at promoting employment in a testy exchange at a debate on Wednesday night.

Since entering the race just weeks ago to unseat Democratic President Barack Obama, Perry has knocked Romney off his front-runner perch and is now leading in the polls.

Here are snippets from the exchange moderated by NBC news anchor Brian Williams.

PERRY: Well, Governor Romney left the private sector, and he did a great job of creating jobs in the private sector all around the world. But the fact is, when he moved that experience to government, he had one of the lowest job creation rates in the country. So the fact is, while he had a good private-sector record, his public-sector record did not match that. As a matter of fact, we created more jobs in the last three months in Texas than he created in four years in Massachusetts.

WILLIAMS: Well, let's widen this out and let's bring in Mr. (Herman) Cain on one side.

ROMNEY: Wait a second. ... Listen, wait a second.

WILLIAMS: We could do this all evening.

ROMNEY: States are different. Texas is a great state. Texas has zero income tax. Texas has a right-to-work state, a Republican legislature, a Republican Supreme Court. Texas has a lot of oil and gas in the ground.

Those are wonderful things, but Governor Perry doesn't believe that he created those things. If he tried to say that, well, it would be like Al Gore saying he invented the Internet.

ROMNEY: Look, the reality is, there are differences. There are differences between states. I came into a state that was in real trouble -- a huge budget gap, losing jobs every month. We turned it around. Three out of four years, we had unemployment rate below the national average, we ended up with 4.7 percent unemployment rate. I'm proud of what we were able to do in a tough situation.

PERRY: (Former Massachusetts Governor) Michael Dukakis created jobs three times faster than you did, Mitt.

ROMNEY: Well, as a matter of fact, George Bush and his predecessor created jobs at a faster rate than you did, Governor.

PERRY: That's not correct.

ROMNEY: Yes, that is correct.

Jury selection begins in trial of Jackson's doctor (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? A pool of prospective jurors appeared ready for the news delivered to them Thursday by a judge: They had been summoned to serve on Los Angeles' biggest trial of the year ? the involuntary manslaughter trial of Michael Jackson's doctor.

No one flinched at the announcement. And when Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor asked whether anyone in the courtroom was unaware of the case against Dr. Conrad Murray, not a single hand was raised among the 160 or so people in the room.

The judge was not surprised.

"We didn't expect you'd been living under a rock for the past several years, or that you made a pit stop from Mars," Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor said.

Murray has pleaded not guilty in the case. Authorities contend he gave Jackson a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol in the bedroom of the pop superstar's rented mansion in June 2009, but attorneys for the physician deny he administered anything that should have been fatal. They will contend that Jackson swallowed an overdose of propofol when Murray wasn't watching.

Murray sat with his lawyers on one side of a long table and prosecutors on the other in the vast jury assembly room which was transformed into a courtroom for the first round of a jury selection process that will take two weeks to find a pool of 100 people willing and qualified to serve on the case which Pastor said would last about five weeks.

Those who passed the first hurdle of having no hardships were given a 30-page questionnaire to fill out. The judge said it was one of the most extensive such forms ever, probing jurors' lives and their knowledge of a case focusing on the death of one of the world's most famous men, the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen," Murray said softly as he was introduced to the panelists. Attorneys also arose and greeted the prospects, who responded with a calm, "Good morning."

For the rest of the 20-minute session, Murray sat starting straight ahead, showing no reaction.

The judge told prospects he had decided against sequestering the jury because he felt, "Jurors would, in effect, be prisoners if they were holed up in a hotel.

"I chose not to follow that path," he said "and by making that choice I am reiterating my faith in every juror chosen in this case."

A central focus of his talk was the Internet and all of its offshoots.

"I certainly realize that for some of us, especially those who have grown up in the Internet age, searching the Internet is as easy as breathing," Pastor said.

But he warned that jurors must avoid online reports about the case.

"If you want to Google, Google away," he said. "Surf the Net, but not about anything to do with this case."

He read an admonition that will be repeated daily forbidding them to discuss the case with anyone, to post messages on social networks or to read any tweets about the case.

He warned they must wait until 90 days after the case is over to negotiate any deals to be paid for information.

"This is not a case about whether Dr. Murray is guilty or innocent," he said. "It's about whether the people can meet the burden of proving him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt."

On Thursday, those who had no hardships, filled out a 30-page questionnaire aimed at determining their level of knowledge of the case and any strong views about Jackson or Murray.

This was the second attempt to start jury selection. In May, the judge aborted an earlier session because lawyers needed more time to prepare. Prosecutors and defense attorneys will have several days to scrutinize the responses before direct questioning of potential jurors begins on Sept. 23.

Jackson's death on June 25, 2009, stunned the world. The singer had been in final preparations for a series of comeback concerts in London, and the focus quickly turned to Murray, his personal physician.

The Houston-based cardiologist faces up to four years in prison and the loss of his medical license if convicted.

LOS ANGELES ? A judge says the trial of the doctor charged in Michael Jackson's death is "on course" despite an appeal filed last week by the physician's attorneys.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor says jury selection in the case will begin as planned on Thursday unless the appeals court issues a stay in the case.

Attorneys for Dr. Conrad Murray on Friday appealed a ruling by Pastor that jurors in the upcoming involuntary manslaughter trial will not be sequestered.

Pastor says he's confident justices on the 2nd District Court of Appeal will provide some guidance soon.

Murray pleaded not guilty and faces up to four years in prison if convicted.

Authorities say he gave Jackson a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol and other sedatives in June 2009.

I?m considering tiling my bedroom and the kitchen as a nice surprise for my mom this Summer and would love to know some advice on tiling myself. I?m going to use the type of tile that has the glue stuff on the back already and you just have to pull off a paper and place it down on the floor for it to stick. Could anyone help me with some questions about tiling?

- With the type of tiles I?m using, will I have to remove the old tile in my home?
- What do I use to cut the tiles? Is there any specific tool that I could purchase?
- Have any tips for tiling to so I can do a better job?

AP Interview: Moussa says he warned Mubarak

CERNOBBIO, Italy (AP) ? Amr Moussa, a leading candidate for the presidency of Egypt, said Friday that he had warned Hosni Mubarak days before his fall to call off security forces who attacked demonstrators but was ignored by an authoritarian ruler who seemed convinced he could ride out the popular uprising.

In an interview with The Associated Press at an economic conference in Italy, Moussa predicted that embattled Syrian President Bashar Assad would fall as well ? and that democracy would spread across the region.

"I hope that all of them, including the Syrian regime, will understand that this is a historic trend. There's no U-turn in it. People have spoken. They cannot get back to the normal life (of) the last 10, 20, 30 or 60 years," Moussa said. "If they don't, it's a matter of time. ... The situation now is untenable."

Moussa said that as secretary-general of the Arab League earlier this year he encountered opposition to a tough hand against Syria because there was a desire to prioritize Libya's descent into civil war ? but there was also opposition to a direct Arab intervention in Libya. Instead the 22-member organization called on the world community to enforce a no-fly zone over the country and acquiesced to the NATO operation that last month succeeded in helping the rebels overthrow Moammar Gadhafi.

"Gadhafi was so adamant," recalled Moussa, who left his League post earlier this year after a decade in the job and is now focusing on his run for president. "He was ready to pay any price to quell the opposition."

In the case of Syria, he said, the Arab League would be more proactive: "I believe that the Arab League will vote (to) intervene ? an Arab intervention to protect the population, I don't know whether military or not. It was not available in the Libyan case, because I tried it and I did not succeed."

"I do expect the success of the revolution in Syria."

Moussa, who served Mubarak in the 1990s as foreign minister, acknowledged that the Arab Spring ? as the uprisings in the region have come to be known ? "surprised everybody."

"But the event itself, a revolution against tyranny, was in the air. So many of us smelled it, expected it, predicted it, including myself."

He said that in January, when Egypt's unrest began, he told Mubarak: "People are angry and people are frustrated. Those forces have to stop." Mubarak, he said, offered "no reaction ... perhaps he was very much confident that his security forces could prevent this from happening."

At least 860 people were killed in several weeks of violence, and Mubarak was ultimately toppled on Feb. 11.

Was Moussa comfortable observing the humiliation of his former boss, hauled before an Egyptian tribunal in August on a stretcher due to his poor health and confined to a defendant's cage in public, sons by his side?

"I am comfortable with the fact that it is a real trial," Moussa replied, looking less than fully comfortable. "Look, if you go and visit the poor areas in Cairo ... you will see the amount of neglect, the result of corruption that that regime is responsible. This is too bad. Eight million in greater Cairo live in slums. ... I get really angry especially on this score."

Mubarak is charged with complicity in the killings of protesters during the uprising and with corruption. Mubarak has denied the charges, as have his sons, Gamal and Alaa, who are also accused in the corruption charges.

Moussa said Egypt's new military government was doing the best it could with a transition phase and that he expected fully free presidential elections to be held in the first quarter of 2012. Parliamentary elections are expected in November.

Moussa rejected the fears of some in the West ? that the peace treaty with Israel was in danger, or that Islamists might emerge powerful and that in a worst-case scenario Egypt might go the way of Iran, where the Shah was overthrown largely by secular forces who were then quickly undone by an Islamic revolution.

"I don't think that the Islamic currents will have the majority," he said. "We'll have very ... serious debate ? it won't be easy for any group to enforce certain kind of laws on the parliament."

The urbane, 74-year-old Moussa, who is running near the top of most polls, conceded that he might have a problem with voters who see him as less than a breath of fresh air.

"They might think that yes, I (was) with President Mubarak. OK, so they can vote against me," he said.

What would Egypt be like under a President Moussa?

"We have to fix poverty," he said, adding that he would begin the task by sacking local officials who are corrupt and unqualified.

"I want democracy in the right sense of the word: basic human rights respected, separation of authority, independent public judiciary. ... I want to see a vibrant Egypt, first correcting the situation internally and then getting back to its prestigious role in the region. ... Once Egypt is a true democracy ... it will be the engine of change across the Arab world."

He said that change could even touch a country like Saudi Arabia, currently a proudly independent and tightly controlled monarchy where women cannot drive and individual rights are minimal.

"There might be differences between change in Saudi Arabia and change in Egypt, monarchies and a republic or something of that kind, but change will sweep the Arab world in my opinion."
