The White House is calling a new proposal by President Barack Obama "new measures to prevent gun violence." Pro-gun lobbying groups such as the National Rifle Association (NRA) vowed to oppose any move by the Obama administration to limit gun ownership. The president's plan was made public after several high-profile meetings among Vice President Joe Biden and several advocacy groups following the Newtown, Conn., school massacre in mid-December.
The numbers behind the proposals including millions of dollars that could be opposed by millions of NRA members.
23: The number of executive actions proposed by Obama in response to the school shootings. The president believes "most gun owners agree that we can respect the Second Amendment while keeping an irresponsible, law-breaking few from inflicting harm on a massive scale."
40: The number of percentage of gun sales conducted without background checks, according to White House figures . Licensed gun dealers already must run background checks ahead of making gun sales.
1.5 million: The number of "wrong people" prevented from purchasing guns in the past 14 years thanks to gun background check laws in the United States. In addition to universal background checks, Obama wants more research into violent video games, more money for school security and more help for mental health professionals.
500 million: The number of dollars the administration wants to spend in order to strengthen security and gun laws, according to the Associated Press . Part of the money aims to put 1,000 police officers in schools at a cost of $150 million.
84: The number of percent of Americans who back broader background checks for gun ownership, according to a brand new Associated Press poll . The same survey revealed six in 10 Americans favor stricter gun control laws including limits on military-style weapons and less violence in video games.
10: The number of rounds per weapon the administration wants as a limit on all guns owned by citizens. Obama said he wants to restore "the ban on military-style assault weapons and a 10-round limit for magazines... ."
90 million: The estimated number of firearms in the United States in 2011, according to U.S. News & World Report. Half of America's 60 million households have at least one gun. The same article believed up to 90 percent of the 24 million handguns in the United States could be seized if Congress passes laws recommended by the National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence.
4.2 million: The number of NRA members, according to the Washington Post . The article notes the group mobilizes its members quickly and efficiently at state and local levels when gun control legislation is considered. Illinois State Rifle Association executive director Richard A. Pearson called his membership of 20,000 "passionate" and "big" after the state tried to limit assault weapons.
