iTunes ? It Goes To 11. (In Design, If Not Performance.)

aYes, that headline. Obvious. But appropriate. Yes, after much delay (about a month), iTunes 11 is here today. And yes, it is one of the biggest overhauls of the media management service yet. Perhaps the biggest. And yes, it is now better positioned to compete in the era of the cloud. And yes, they even made the icon a bit better. It was back at the iPhone 5 event in September, when Apple first previewed the latest version of iTunes, pointing out many of the new/revised features on stage. But how does it hold up in terms of actual usage? Pretty good. Not perfect. But better than any of the previous versions of the software.

4 Things You Can Do to Make the Holidays Easier for Foster and ...

How often do we hear the phrase ??Tis the season to be jolly? during the holiday season? Many of us don?t think twice as we give and receive such greetings, but for a foster or adopted child those sentiments ? and the holiday season in general ? can be very difficult.

Abuse and Neglect Issues
Within the typical dysfunctional home environment that many of our children come from, abuse or neglect doesn?t slow down during the holidays. In fact, abuse or neglect would be exacerbated this time of year in many cases due to increased financial and family stressors.

Separation Issues
Beyond the fact that abuse likely took no holiday in a foster or adoptive child?s life, this child also has to deal with confusing and painful separation issues. Many foster and adoptive children have connections to parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents that do not simply disappear once they have entered foster care or their new adoptive home.

Many children coming from abusive or neglectful situations will not be able to verbalize or connect their feelings to the separation they have experienced. Older children may be able to make the connection, but might feel inhibited from telling their new caregivers for a variety of reasons (e.g. they don?t want to hurt the new caregiver?s feelings).

What Can You Do to Help?

  1. Listen. Do what you do that led you to foster care and adoption ? be there and be empathetic. You can tell your foster child or adoptive child that you understand that they may be missing some of their family or may have some difficult memories from around the holiday times. Tell them that you are there to listen and help.?
  2. Look. Be aware of the non-verbal and verbal responses that you receive during holiday festivities. Foster children and adoptive children from chaotic home environments may need ?rests? from holiday events at times and shelter from some of the stimulation.?
  3. Include. Try to incorporate family and cultural traditions from the child?s family that are appropriate and comforting to the child or adolescent. If possible, try to include appropriate family members in planned holiday festivities, and be open to talk with your child afterwards.
  4. Treat. Many of our children attend therapy or counseling. Relate any issues you observe to the child?s therapist if you note clear signs of depression of anxiety.

Holidays can be a fun and festive time for children as they learn about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. With caring and empathy, our foster and adoptive parents are sharing their homes and lives in His service. Buckner thanks you for all you do.

NASA blasts away at doomsday bunk

NASA scientists took time on Wednesday to soothe 2012 doomsday fears, warning against the dark side of Maya apocalypse rumors ? frightened children and suicidal teens who truly fear the world may come to an end Dec. 21.

These fears are based on misinterpretations of the Maya calendar. On the 21st, the date of the winter solstice, a calendar cycle called the 13th b'ak'tun comes to an end. Although Maya scholars agree that the ancient Maya would not have seen this day as apocalyptic, rumors have spread that a cosmic event may end life on Earth on that day.

Thus NASA's involvement. The space agency maintains a 2012 information page debunking popular Maya apocalypse rumors, such as the idea that a rogue planet will hit Earth on Dec. 21, killing everyone. (In fact, astronomers are quite good at detecting near-Earth objects, and any wandering planet scheduled to collide with Earth in three weeks would be the brightest object in the sky behind the sun and moon by now.)

"There is no true issue here," David Morrison, an astrobiologist at NASA Ames Research Center, said during a NASA Google+ Hangout event Wednesday. "This is just a manufactured fantasy." [End of the World? Top Doomsday Fears]

Real-world consequences
Unfortunately, Morrison said, the fantasy has real-life consequences. As one of NASA's prominent speakers on 2012 doomsday myths, Morrison said, he receives many emails and letters from worried citizens, particularly young people. Some say they can't eat, or are too worried to sleep, Morrison said. Others say they're suicidal.

"While this is a joke to some people and a mystery to others, there is a core of people who are truly concerned," he said.

Not every 2012 apocalypse believer thinks the world will end on Dec. 21. Some, inspired by New Age philosophies, expect a day of universal peace and spiritual transformation. But it's impressionable kids who have NASA officials worried.

"I think it's evil for people to propagate rumors on the Internet to frighten children," Morrison said.

Myths and misconceptions
NASA scientists took questions via social media in the hour-long video chat, debunking doomsday myths from the rogue planet Nibiru to the danger of killer solar flares.

In fact, said NASA heliophysicist Lika Guhathakurta, it's true that the sun is currently in an active phase of its cycle, meaning electromagnetic energy has picked up. Large solar flares can impact electronics and navigation systems on Earth, but satellites monitoring the sun give plenty of warning and allow officials to compensate for the extra electromagnetic activity when it hits our atmosphere. What's more, Guhathakurta said, this particular solar maximum is the "wimpiest" in some time ? scientists have no reason to expect solar storms beyond what our planet has weathered in the past.

Nor are any near-Earth objects, planetary or otherwise, threatening to slam into our planet on Dec. 21, said Don Yeomans, a planetary scientist who tracks near-Earth objects at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The only close asteroid approach on the horizon is forecast to occur on Feb. 13, 2013, when an asteroid will pass within 4.5 Earth radii to our planet (for perspective, Earth's radius is 3,963 miles, or 6,378 kilometers). The asteroid is not going to hit Earth, Yeomans said.

Other rumors ? that the Earth's magnetic field will suddenly reverse or that the planet will travel almost 30,000 light-years and fall into the black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy ? were also dismissed. (A light-year is the distance light travels in one year, or about 6 trillion miles, or 10 trillion km.)

One popular rumor that the planet will undergo a complete blackout from Dec. 23 to 25 earned a "What?" and blank looks from the panel of scientists.

Ultimately, concerns about Earth's fate would be better focused on slow-acting problems such as climate change rather than some sort of cosmic catastrophe, said Andrew Fraknoi, an astronomer at Foothill College in California.

Mitzi Adams, a heliophysicist at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, agreed.

"The greatest threat to Earth in 2012, at the end of this year and in the future, is just from the human race itself," Adams said.

No More Mister Nice Blog: On Moochers and Looters, Producers ...

Before Social Security and before SSI people had to pay for their own family member's retirement, they had to take care of their own mentally ill family members, they had to house their own disabled children and adults or those people became homeless, were institutionalized, and died. ?People who rented and lived paycheck to paycheck struggled to handle these problem family members. People with homes struggled to hang onto their homes, pay the mortgage, and generally had to sell up to provide some kind of income stream to their disabled adult children. ?This is an invisible fact of life in a modern society in which the elderly aren't picked off by epidemics and disabled children aren't killed off by poor medical treatment at birth or the neglect of institutions for the "feeble minded" or orphanages used as dumping grounds by families overwhelmed by the responsibility for non productive members.

We've really forgotten about this, as a society, just as we've forgotten that Social Security is what pulled 60 percent of the elderly out of poverty and dependency in the first place. ?I object to the very phrase "entitlement" when it is applied to SS or Medicare since, of course, people pay for them in advance and wishing to receive back what one has paid for isn't an "entitlement" in any sense but rather a natural expectation that one owns what one has purchased--whether that is an object on the open market or peace of mind through buying into a defined benefit insurance plan (which both SS and Medicare are).

However, there is something which needs to be said about the mass amnesia and the willfull blindness of the American people as to how and why the milk got into the coconut. ?A huge swathe of the American people think that society is, in fact, split between makers and takers, between producers and moochers--but they all think that the line is set just one notch below themselves.? Steve M. has a nice post below this one about how shocked the various right wing commenters are that someone (else) can get foodstamps, or government assistance, while still having a pot to piss in--an apartment, a refrigerator, a cel phone, or a car. ?What underlies that outrage is not mere miserliness of spirit but an assumption that government assistance should only be offered to people who are, basically, already entirely immiserated. ?Anything else is subsidizing someone who doesn't need it. ?In the case of the woman who "left" her children's "real father" the person who is getting the subsidy is, of course the biological father of the children--not the mother. ?(I'd like to point out that under law the biological father's financial responsibility for his own children does not end at the point that he stops getting free sex from the biological mother. That's a straight up men's rights argument. ?Marriage or divorce shoudl not have made the children dependent on the kindness of the mother's new partner). ?In the case of the apocryphal man with the six cylinder car the person getting the subsidy is ?the car owner not the family he is feeding.

This isn't, exactly, wrong--when the government/taxpayers step in to pay for health care or elder care the families of those people who are getting subsidized are actually getting a benefit. its not just the person who gets the benefit directly who is being subsidized--its the entire social circle (the family, the neighborhood, the city) who is being given a break because it is these people who would otherwise have to pay to make sure the children are fed, the elderly are housed, the sick are cared for.

I have a lovely friend--she's voted Democratic in every election since FDR. She's 95. ?She lives in the house her family built on the same street where she was born. She and her husband inherited the house, probably even free and clear of a mortgage, from her older brother who died without children. ?They both had various jobs and paid taxes for probably fifty years but she probably hasn't paid any federal income taxes for at least 25 years. ?Her husband had a stroke and was paralyzed for six years and she nursed him, largely at home. ?She has been on Medicare for a very long time. ?Recently she had a stroke, was in the hospital for 3 days without speech and movement and then in a Rehab hospital for about ten days. ?The entire street turned out to be present with her in both places--driving the nursing staff crazy--because she has only one child, a woman in her 70's, who is selfish and incompetent.

My friend was brought home to her own home, to her second floor apartment, and installed back there where she is (essentially) a prisoner with full time in home care. ?I'm not sure who is paying for the round the clock care. ?I'm pretty sure it isn't Medicare or Medicaid. ?What really makes sense for her would be to sell the house, which is easily worth a million dollars in this market, and move to an assisted living facility. ?The income from the house would pay for the next ten years of assisted living easily. ?But she wants to hang onto the house to leave as an asset to her daughter. ?My friend and her daughter are very angry that "the law" would claw back the house from the daughter if they tried to strip the mother of her assets in order to put her in a home on Medicaid. ?They are angry that the public nursing homes aren't all that nice. My friend actually volunteered for 40 years at a then public local home which had a couple of "scholarships" for a few indigent elderly and she resents the fact that she wouldn't qualify for one of those scholarships--because she's not indigent.

?They are under the impression that the "safety net" for the elderly should be extended upwards so that the elderly can leave their assets to their children--transferring wealth down within the family while transferring the cost of elder care and health care to the taxpayer. ?(This strategy, by the way, is necessitated by the fact that the daughter never married and never had children and was a teacher in an age of declining pay and retirement benefits so she never formed her own stable middle class household and does not have children to support her in her old age.)

What strikes me most in talking to both of them is the illusion they have that they already paid for an incredibly high level of care "with their taxes" over the years as though their tax money didn't go for a lot of other shit they weren't thinking about like wars or roads. ?They also don't seem to grasp that there's not some office of government benefits out there that is aimed at keeping the middle class middle class but a hard fought system of begrudged aid for the poorest and most problematic of society. ?They've sat through years of public debate about "the poverty level" or "benefits offered to people at 150 percent of poverty level" and it never occurred to them that those regulations would apply to them and that they might be rated on that ungenerous scale when they needed help themselves.

It used to be said that a conservative was a liberal who got mugged and I used to assume that when a right wing guy lost his job and had to depend on food stamps and/or unemployment you would see a similar conversion from right to left. Now I'm not so sure. ?Looking at these discussions I've had with my friend and her daughter I think people are very well defended against grasping just how fragile their physical health and their social position really are. ?The first and last reaction seems to be anger that society and government aren't structured to protect "the good people"--not to look around and realize that we have all been buggered by Reagonomics and the rich for a very, very, long time.

Egyptians challenge Mursi in nationwide protests

CAIRO (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of Egyptians rallied on Tuesday against President Mohamed Mursi in one of the biggest outpourings of protest since Hosni Mubarak's overthrow, accusing the Islamist leader of seeking to impose a new era of autocracy.

Police fired tear gas at stone-throwing youths in streets near the main protest in Cairo's Tahrir Square, heart of the uprising that toppled Mubarak last year. Clashes between Mursi's opponents and supporters erupted in a city north of Cairo.

But violence could not overshadow the show of strength by the normally divided opponents of Islamists in power, posing Mursi with the biggest challenge in his five months in office.

"The people want to bring down the regime," protesters in Tahrir chanted, echoing slogans used in the 2011 revolt.

Protesters also turned out in Alexandria, Suez, Minya and other Nile Delta cities.

Tuesday's unrest by leftists, liberals and other groups deepened the worst crisis since the Muslim Brotherhood politician was elected in June, and exposed the deep divide between the newly empowered Islamists and their opponents.

A 52-year-old protester died after inhaling tear gas in Cairo, the second death since Mursi last week issued a decree that expanded his powers and barred court challenges to his decisions.

Mursi's administration has defended the decree as an effort to speed up reforms and complete a democratic transformation in the Arab world's most populous country.

"Calls for civil disobedience and strikes will be dealt with strictly by law and there is no retreat from the decree," Refa'a Al-Tahtawy, Mursi's presidential chief of staff, told the Al-Hayat private satellite channel.

But opponents say Mursi is behaving like a modern-day pharaoh, a jibe once leveled at Mubarak. The United States, a benefactor to Egypt's military, has expressed concern about more turbulence in a country that has a peace treaty with Israel.

"We don't want a dictatorship again. The Mubarak regime was a dictatorship. We had a revolution to have justice and freedom," 32-year-old Ahmed Husseini said in Cairo.

The fractious ranks of Egypt's non-Islamist opposition have been united on the street by crisis, although they have yet to build an electoral machine to challenge the well-organized Islamists, who have beaten their more secular-minded rivals at the ballot box in two elections held since Mubarak was ousted.

MISCALCULATION

"There are signs that over the last couple of days that Mursi and the Brotherhood realized their mistake," said Elijah Zarwan, a fellow with The European Council on Foreign Relations. He said the protests were "a very clear illustration of how much of a political miscalculation this was".

Mursi's move provoked a rebellion by judges and has battered confidence in an economy struggling after two years of turmoil. The president still must implement unpopular measures to rein in Egypt's crushing budget deficit - action needed to finalize a deal for a $4.8 billion International Monetary Fund loan.

Some protesters have been camped out since Friday in Tahrir and violence has flared around the country, including in a town north of Cairo where a Muslim Brotherhood youth was killed in clashes on Sunday. Hundreds have been injured.

Supporters and opponents of Mursi threw stones at each other and some hurled petrol bombs in the Delta city of el-Mahalla el-Kubra. Medical sources said almost 200 people were injured.

"The main demand is to withdraw the constitutional declaration (decree). This is the point," said Amr Moussa, a former Arab League chief and presidential candidate who has joined the new opposition coalition, the National Salvation Front. The group includes several top liberal politicians.

Some scholars from the prestigious al-Azhar mosque and university joined Tuesday's protest, showing that Mursi and his Brotherhood have alienated some more moderate Muslims. Members of Egypt's large Christian minority also joined in.

Mursi formally quit the Brotherhood on taking office, saying he would be a president for all Egyptians, but he is still a member of its Freedom and Justice Party.

The decree issued on Thursday expanded his powers and protected his decisions from judicial review until the election of a new parliament, expected in the first half of 2013.

In Washington, White House spokesman Jay Carney urged demonstrators to behave peacefully.

"The current constitutional impasse is an internal Egyptian situation that can only be resolved by the Egyptian people, through peaceful democratic dialogue," he told reporters.

New York-based Human Rights Watch said the decree gives Mursi more power than the interim military junta from which he took over.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told an Austrian paper he would encourage Mursi to resolve the issue by dialogue.

DECREE'S SCOPE DEBATABLE

Trying to ease tensions with judges, Mursi assured Egypt's highest judicial authority that elements of his decree giving his decisions immunity applied only to matters of "sovereign" importance. That should limit it to issues such as declaring war, but experts said there was room for interpretation.

In another step to avoid more confrontation, the Muslim Brotherhood cancelled plans for a rival mass rally in Cairo on Tuesday to support the decree. Violence has flared in Cairo in the past when both sides have taken to the streets.

But there has been no retreat on other elements of the decree, including a stipulation that the Islamist-dominated body writing a new constitution be protected from legal challenge.

"The decree must be cancelled and the constituent assembly should be reformed. All intellectuals have left it and now it is controlled by Islamists," said 50-year-old Noha Abol Fotouh.

With its popular legitimacy undermined by the withdrawal of most of its non-Islamist members, the assembly faces a series of court cases from plaintiffs who say it was formed illegally.

Mursi issued the decree on November 22, a day after he won U.S. and international praise for brokering an end to eight days of violence between Israel and Hamas around the Gaza Strip.

Mursi's decree was seen as targeting in part a legal establishment still largely unreformed from Mubarak's era, when the Brotherhood was outlawed.

Though both Islamists and their opponents broadly agree that the judiciary needs reform, Mursi's rivals oppose his methods.

Rulings from an array of courts this year have dealt a series of blows to the Brotherhood, leading to the dissolution of the first constitutional assembly and the lower house of parliament elected a year ago. The Brotherhood dominated both.

The judiciary blocked an attempt by Mursi to reconvene the Brotherhood-led parliament after his election victory. It also stood in the way of his attempt to sack the prosecutor general, another Mubarak holdover, in October.

In his decree, Mursi gave himself the power to sack that prosecutor and appoint a new one. In open defiance of Mursi, some judges are refusing to acknowledge that step.

Splits between rich, poor nations persist as climate talks open in ...

By The Associated Press

DOHA, Qatar -- U.N. talks on a new climate pact resumed Monday in oil and gas-rich Qatar, where negotiators from nearly 200 countries will discuss fighting global warming and helping poor nations adapt to it.

The two-decade-old talks have not fulfilled their main purpose: reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that scientists say are warming the planet.

Attempts to create a new climate treaty failed in Copenhagen three years ago but countries agreed last year to try again, giving themselves a deadline of 2015 to adopt a new treaty.

A host of issues need to be resolved by then, including how to spread the burden of emissions cuts between rich and poor countries.

Focus on Kyoto Protocol, raising money
That is unlikely to be decided in the two-week talks in the Qatari capital of Doha, where negotiators will focus on extending the Kyoto Protocol, an emissions deal for industrialized countries, and trying to raise billions of dollars to help developing countries adapt to a shifting climate.

EPA

South African Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana Mashabane speaks during the opening of the climate talks in Doha, Qatar, on Monday.

Activists hope storm-struck US will deliver at Doha climate talks

"We all realize why we are here, why we keep coming back year and after year," said South Africa Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, who led last year's talks in Durban, South Africa. "We owe it to our people, the global citizenry. We owe it to our children to give them a safer future than what they are currently facing."

The U.N. process is often criticized, even ridiculed, both by climate activists who say the talks are too slow, and by those who challenge the scientific near-consensus that the global temperature rise is at least partly caused by human activity, primarily the burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil.

The concentration of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide has jumped 20 percent since 2000, according to a U.N. report released last week. The report also showed that there is a growing gap between what governments are doing to curb emissions and what needs to be done to protect the world from potentially dangerous levels of warming.

The goal of the U.N. talks is to keep the global temperature rise under 3.6 F, compared to pre-industrial times.

The Maldives, the lowest-lying nation on Earth, is at risk of disappearing from the world map, scientists say.

Obama: 'I won't go' for climate action that hurts jobs, growth

The threat 'today'
But efforts taken so far to rein in emissions, reduce deforestation and promote clean technology are not getting the job done. A recent projection by the World Bank showed temperatures are expected to increase by up to 7.2 F by 2100.

"Climate change is no longer some distant threat for the future, but is with us today," said Greenpeace climate campaigner Martin Kaiser, who was also at the Doha talks. "At the end of a year that has seen the impacts of climate change devastate homes and families around the world, the need for action is obvious and urgent."

Dangerous warming effects could include flooding of coastal cities and island nations, disruptions to agriculture and drinking water, the spread of diseases and the extinction of species.

Many scientists also say that extreme weather events, such as Hurricane Sandy's onslaught on the U.S. East Coast, will become more frequent as the Earth warms, although it is impossible to attribute any individual event to climate change.

The Kyoto Protocol, adopted in 1997, is the most important climate agreement reached in the U.N. process so far. It expires this year, so negotiators in Doha will try to extend it as a stopgap measure until a wider deal can be reached.

Ex-climate change skeptic: Humans cause global warming

For thousands of years, permafrost has trapped Siberia's carbon-rich soil, a compost of Ice Age plant and animal remains. But global warming is melting the permafrost and exposing the soil, causing highly flammable methane to seep out. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

Divisions
The problem is that only the European Union and a handful of other countries -- that together are behind less than 15 percent of global emissions -- are willing to put down emissions targets for a second commitment period of Kyoto.

The United States rejected Kyoto because it did not impose any binding commitments on major developing countries such as India and China, which is now the world's No. 1 carbon emitter.

Climate-changing methane 'rapidly destabilizing' off East Coast, study finds

The United States and other Western countries insist that the firewall in the climate talks between developing and developed countries must be removed so that the new treaty can apply to all nations.

China and other developing countries want to maintain a clear division, saying climate change is mainly a legacy of Western industrialization and that their own emissions must be allowed to grow as their economies expand, lifting millions of people out of poverty.

The Inuit, who survived for centuries by hunting seals and whales, are watching their way of life disappear.

Complete Environment coverage on NBCNews.com

That discord scuttled attempts to forge a climate deal in Copenhagen in 2009 and risks a relapse in Doha as talks begin on a new global deal that is supposed to be adopted in 2015 and implemented in 2020.

The rich-poor divide is also deepened by arguments over climate aid meant to help developing countries convert to cleaner energy sources and adapt their infrastructure to rising sea levels and other effects of global warming.

Hobbits, superheroes put magic in NZ film industry

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? A crate full of sushi arrives. Workers wearing wetsuit shirts or in bare feet bustle past with slim laptops. With days to go, a buzzing intensity fills the once-dilapidated warehouses where Peter Jackson's visual-effects studio is rushing to finish the opening film in "The Hobbit" trilogy.

The fevered pace at the Weta Digital studio near Wellington will last nearly until the actors walk the red carpet Nov. 28 for the world premiere. But after "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" hits theaters, there's more work to be done.

Weta Digital is the centerpiece of a filmmaking empire that Jackson and close collaborators have built in his New Zealand hometown, realizing his dream of bringing a slice of Hollywood to Wellington. It's a one-stop shop for making major movies ? not only his own, but other blockbusters like "Avatar" and "The Avengers" and hoped-for blockbusters like next year's "Man of Steel."

Along the way, Jackson has become revered here, even receiving a knighthood. His humble demeanor and crumpled appearance appeal to distinctly New Zealand values, yet his modesty belies his influence. He's also attracted criticism along the way.

The special-effects workforce of 150 on "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy a decade ago now numbers 1,100. Only five of Weta Digital's workers are actual employees, however, while the rest are contractors. Many accept the situation because movie work often comes irregularly but pays well. Union leaders, though, say the workers lack labor protections existing in almost any other industry.

Like many colleagues, Weta Digital's director, Joe Letteri, came to New Zealand in 2001 to work on the "Rings" trilogy for two years. The work kept coming, so he bought a house in Wellington and stayed.

"People come here because they know it's their chance to do something really great and to get it up on the screen," he said in a recent interview.

Jackson, who declined to be interviewed for this story, launched Weta in 1993 with fellow filmmakers Jamie Selkirk and Richard Taylor. Named after an oversized New Zealand insect, the company later was split into its digital arm and Weta Workshop, which makes props and costumes.

Loving homages to the craft are present in Weta Digital's seven buildings around the green-hilled suburb of Miramar. There are old-time movie posters, prop skulls of dinosaurs and apes, and a wall of latex face impressions of actors from Chris O'Donnell to Tom Cruise.

Its huge data center, with the computing power of 30,000 laptops, resembles a milk-processing plant because only the dairy industry in New Zealand knew how to build cooling systems on such a grand scale.

Little of Weta's current work was visible. Visitors must sign confidentiality agreements, and the working areas of the facilities are off-limits. The company is secretive about any unannounced projects, beyond saying Weta will be working solidly for the next two years, when the two later "Hobbit" films are scheduled to be released.

The workforce has changed from majority American to about 60 percent New Zealanders. The only skill that's needed, Letteri says, is the ability to use a computer as a tool.

Beyond having creativity as a filmmaker, Jackson has proved a savvy businessman, Letteri says.

"The film business in general is volatile, and visual effects has to be sitting right on the crest of that wave," Letteri says. "We don't get asked to do something that somebody has seen before."

The government calculates that feature films contribute $560 million each year to New Zealand's economy. Like many countries, New Zealand offers incentives and rebates to film companies and will contribute about $100 million toward the $500 million production costs of "The Hobbit" trilogy. Almost every big budget film goes through Jackson's companies.

"New Zealand has a good reputation for delivering films on time and under budget, and Jackson has been superb at that," says John Yeabsley, a senior fellow at New Zealand's Institute of Economic Research. "Nobody has the same record or the magic ability to bring home the bacon as Sir Peter."

"You cannot overestimate the fact that Peter is a brand," says Graeme Mason, chief executive of the New Zealand Film Commission. "He's built this incredible reputational position, which has a snowball effect."

Back in 2010, however, a labor dispute erupted before filming began on "The Hobbit." Unions said they would boycott the movie if the actors didn't get to collectively negotiate. Jackson and others warned that New Zealand could lose the films to Europe. Warner Bros. executives flew to New Zealand and held a high-stakes meeting with Prime Minister John Key, whose government changed labor laws overnight to clarify that movie workers were exempt from being treated as regular employees.

Helen Kelly, president of the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions, says a compromise could easily have been reached. She says the law changes amounted to unnecessary union-busting and a "gross breach" of employment laws.

"I was very disappointed at Peter Jackson for lobbying for that," she says, "and I was furious at the government for doing it."

Weta Digital's general manager Tom Greally compared it to the construction industry, where multiple contractors and mobile workers do specific projects and then move on.

Animal rights activists said last week they plan to picket the premiere of "The Hobbit" after wranglers alleged that three horses and up to two dozen other animals died in unsafe conditions at a farm where animals were boarded for the movies. Jackson's spokesman Matt Dravitzki acknowledged two horses died preventable deaths at the farm but said the production company worked quickly to improve animal housing and safety. He rejected claims any animals were mistreated or abused.

Jackson's team pointed out that 55 percent of animal images in "The Hobbit" were computer generated at Weta. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have asked Jackson in the future to create all his animals in the studio.

Controversies aside, the rise of Weta and the expat American community in and around Miramar is visible in everything from a Mexican restaurant to yoga classes. On Halloween, which in the past was not much celebrated in New Zealand, hundreds of costumed children roamed about collecting candy. Americans gave the tradition a boost here, but the locals have embraced it.

The National Business Review newspaper estimates Jackson's personal fortune to be about $400 million, which could rise considerably if "The Hobbit" franchise succeeds. Public records show Jackson has partial ownership stakes in 21 private companies, most connected with his film empire. He's spent some of his money on philanthropy, helping save a historic church and a performance theater.

For all his influence, Jackson maintains a hobbit-like existence himself, preferring a quiet home life outside of work. In the end, many say, he seems to be driven by what has interested him from the start: telling great stories on the big screen.

Understanding the Personal Injury Legal Process | Nil2Million

Related Links Based On Your Search

Before an individual pursues damages for a personal injury claim, they should understand how this process works. Based on the law, damages for these claims can be collected if the injury is due to the negligence or actions of another entity. The damages that an individual collects can be in the form of pain and suffering, wrongful death, long-term or short-term disabilities, emotional injury and emotional distress. When an individual suffers from one or more of these things, they can recoup a certain monetary amount for their losses and debt incurred. The debt is normally due to various kinds of medical bills and hospital bills. The amount of money involved can be from a few thousands to millions of dollars for the injury that has been sustained. These awards are based on the severity of the injury. One of the reasons why the amounts can range from low to high is because the victim can claim punitive damages if it applies.

Obtaining Legal Representation

While some people may be tempted to pursue the case without the representation of attorney, this decision is normally impractical because the attorney involved should be well versed and skilled with knowing personal injury law. Additionally, the client should also look for those attorneys who have litigation experience, especially if the insurance company or private agency involved refuses to offer a reasonable award. If the client is concerned about the costs of representation, they can talk to the attorney about working on a contingency basis. Which means, after the client receives a settlement, the attorney will receive a certain percentage of the amount that is awarded.

Obtaining the right representation, however, may sometimes be difficult to do if the individual is not familiar with the best attorneys in the industry. Hence, the client will most likely have to do their homework before talking to any attorney. The process of getting the right attorney should be done as quickly as possible, since the individual will need guidance on what should be done within certain timeframes.
Timeframe for Filing

The time frames can vary based on the types of injury and the state that the injury was sustained in. The victim may have 120 days to file a personal injury claim or they may have 2 years. By contacting an attorney quickly, each individual will know how fast he or she should move.

Litigation vs. Mediation

In the past, litigation was the most commonly known way of seeking recourse for an injury. Today, insurance companies are now pushing more cases into mediation instead. When taking the cases through a mediation process, insurance companies can save on the court cost and time spent in court (some cases can take years to settle). Therefore, the mediation process is viewed as a more efficient process for settling injury claims outside of the court system. In some cases, this is a winning solution for the insurance company as well as for the injured person. In others, however, the injured may not receive the maximum that is allowed based the law.

Nokia Transit update brings segmented route maps, relative times to Windows Phone and Symbian

Nokia still has a ways to go before directions in Nokia Transit (also known as Nokia Transport) are on par with Google's, but the Finnish crew is clearly on the right track with a fresh update to its Windows Phone and Symbian apps. Travelers now see segmented route maps that provide a closer look at key points in the trip as well as more focused directions at those crucial moments. The app is that much more savvy about travel times, as well -- the forward-thinking can at last plan trips days in advance, and there's new options for relative arrival times as well as a simplified destination history. Symbian even gets its own specific update with long-overdue support for route updates in-app, rather than through upgrading the app itself. Lumia owners on Windows Phone 8 devices can get the spruced-up version of Transit or Transport today as a regular update; Symbian and Windows Phone 7 users willing to live on the edge can get roughly equivalent betas at the same time.

It is imperative in modern times to use Online marketing effectively. If you neglect Affiliate marketing, do not expect people to find your website. The following article has some excellent tips and tricks that will show you how to be a successful Internet marketer.

Incorporating your ads for products and services in powerful locations on the Internet is a smart move for your Online marketing plan. AdSense by Google can help you to achieve this. This is a very good way to get a high amount of marketing for a reasonable price and amount of work.

Consider building real social aspects into your business website. This can hep build traffic to your website as customers come back to interact with others. This may make potential customers more likely to return to your site. Include graphics that people can copy and use on their sites to advertise yours.

TIP! Should your visitor ultimately choose not to purchase your product, have a questionnaire at the end of your form so that they may advise you as to why they did not make the purchase. Perhaps they didn?t like the product, your articles or it may be something else.

If you can?t afford a marketing consultant, research on your own. Find some free internet resources about checking up on the effectiveness of your marketing efforts. There are many forums dedicated to topics of interest to small business owners. Furthermore, there is plenty of free and for-pay literature available to help you along the way. Seminars are also a popular option for career development.

People are more apt to listen to those who have an air of authority. If you are the boss of your company, let people know! You may even want to call yourself the business?s President or CEO.

Put ?guarantee? in your website marketing ads if you can. Clients like to know there is no chance to lose money on your product. You can offer a variety of guarantees or warranties for different items. You can offer a 30 day guarantee, or you can offer a lifetime guarantee. Match the right guarantee to the right product.

TIP! When you can, avoid spam. People can tell the difference between comments that have been mass generated and ones that you?ve thoughtfully written yourself.

The word ?limited? should be used in ads wherever possible. A lot of people do their shopping online because their stores don?t offer the variety that they can find on the Internet. Some people want things no one else has. If you sell something that is only available for a short amount of time people will want to get it before it is gone.

Partner up with other vendors to see if you can offer multiple products from multiple vendors as a bundle. You can directly increase your sales volume by linking multiple markets. Online booking agents are great examples of services which offer bundled packages. This is a great option if your business sells products that can be considered supplementary to another company?s products, rather than competing products.

Give away an exciting product that is emblazoned with your company name and site details. Allow it to be advertised for free on ancillary sites. If you are offering a free e-book, the book should be submitted to the websites that offer e-books for free. Many websites are available that give out free e-content and are easy to submit too.

TIP! A good internet marketing strategy should always include giving your customers a money back guarantee if something is not right. This provides your customers with a sense of security in addition to adding credibility for your company.

The most successful way to bring in sales is to use real time leads. When you have some real-time leads you will be able to find the customers that will find your site useful. The delay between when the customer reached out and when you can contact them is shortened to its smallest possible window, leading to a great opportunity to close the sale.

The internet has obscured much of what occurs behind the scenes at many businesses. This is an especially effective tool for small and independently owned businesses who rely on personal selling and relationship marketing to create customers for life.

Consider making a video demonstration of the products you?re selling. This will give your customers a good idea of how your products work. Demonstrate all the features of your products and test them extensively. Post your video on your blog, as well as other websites like Vimeo and Youtube.

TIP! You need to work toward your goals every day. Hone in on specifics when you are writing your articles, and try to master that subject matter.

Seek out people with credibility in your industry that can provide an interview to your site. It is important to obtain legal permission prior to publishing so as you won?t get yourself sued. Make your interviews articles and put them on free article and E-zine directories. You can get a lot of traffic and build your reputation up a lot, giving you a lot of credibility.

Now that you?ve learned a little bit more on online marketing and how to approach it, figure out how to use that in your own advertising campaign. With commitment and determination, you are able to apply the tips in this article that will result in higher sales, better customer relationships, and more recognition.

Electricity from the marshes

ScienceDaily (Nov. 23, 2012) ? An unexpected source of new, clean energy has been found: the Plant-Microbial Fuel Cell that can generate electricity from the natural interaction between living plant roots and soil bacteria. The technique already works on a small scale and will soon be applied in larger marshland areas throughout the world.

On 23 November, researcher Marjolein Helder will defend her PhD research on generating electricity via plants at Wageningen University, part of Wageningen UR. She has also founded a spin-off company called Plant-e with her colleague David Strik.

The Plant-Microbial Fuel Cell draws electricity from the soil while the plants continue to grow. Plants produce organic material via photosynthesis. The roots excrete up to 70 % of this material (unused) into the soil. Bacteria around the roots break down the organic residue, thereby forming a new source of electricity. The degradation processes causes electrons to be released. Marjolein Helder and her colleagues placed an electrode close to the bacteria to absorb these electrons and generate electricity via the potential difference thus created.

The Plant-Microbial Fuel Cell can currently generate 0.4 Watt per square metre of plant growth. This is more than is generated by fermenting biomass. In future, bio-electricity from plants could produce as much as 3.2 Watt per square metre of plant growth. This would mean that a roof measuring 100 m2 would generate enough electricity to supply a household (with an average consumption of 2,800 kWh/year). Plants of various species could be used, including grasses such as common cordgrass and, in warmer countries, rice.

Marshlands

Plant-Microbial Fuel Cells can be used on various scales. Initially on flat roofs or in remote areas in developing countries and later, when larger effective surface areas become feasible, central grids can be realised in areas of marshland. The researcher thinks that green energy-producing roofs will become a reality within a few years and production on a larger scale will follow suit soon after 2015. Although the technology is promising, it is not yet fully developed. Techniques for making the system renewable and sustainable still need improvement, and ways must be found to limit the amount of material used by the electrodes. Placing the electrodes in the optimum position around the plant causes electricity production to rise and material use to drop by two-thirds. In remote areas, the current capacity of Plant-Microbial Fuel Cell is already making them an economic rival for solar panels.

Marjolein Helder's PhD research did not only focus on the technical aspects of the Plant-Microbial Fuel Cell, but also on how the technology could be integrated into society. It appears that this new renewable source is economically viable, will curb the pressure on the environment and is likely to be socially acceptable. It does not pollute the horizon (like wind turbines or ugly solar panels), does not interfere with nature (like dams) and the system does not compete with agricultural land in the debate on food and biofuels.

The Plant-Microbial Fuel Cell principle was discovered and patented in 2007 by the Environmental Technology Group at Wageningen University. Bert Hamelers conceived the concept, and David Strik carried out the first tests. Larger projects followed, such as the EU PlantPower project.

Debate over EU debate mixes philosophy and money

And for once, Britain will be at the heart of the debate. (AP Photo/Virginia Mayo)

(AP) ? Which side of this week's debate on the European Union budget a country takes can depend largely on which side its bread is buttered.

Those that contribute more to the EU than they get back generally want to hold the line on the organization's budget ? or even see spending fall. Those who receive more money than they put in tend to support a robust rise, if at all possible ? and regard possible cuts with dread.

The leaders of the 27 EU member countries descended on Brussels on Thursday to duke it out over the next two, three or even four days regarding the EU's budget trajectory over the seven years from 2014-2020. And, for whatever reason, the philosophies expressed often correlate closely with the money involved.

Each of the EU's 27 national leaders can veto the budget plan. With such diametrically opposed philosophies ? and with real money at stake ? whether they will be able to reach a consensus is anybody's guess.

Here's a look at the two main camps:

?Cutters

Many of those countries that contribute more to the EU budget than they take away are fighting increases in spending, claiming it's wasteful, inefficient, and inappropriate to boost the EU's spending when national budgets are being cut.

Leading the would-be budget-cutters is British Prime Minister David Cameron, whose country is, not coincidentally, one of the largest net contributors to the EU budget, second only to Germany.

"At a time when we're making difficult decisions at home over public spending, it would be quite wrong ? it is quite wrong ? for there to be proposals for this increased, extra spending in the EU," Cameron said Thursday.

A number of other net contributors ? Germany, Finland, Austria, Finland and the Netherlands, for example ? share more or less the same philosophy.

?Boosters

Other countries, most of which get more money from out of the EU than they put in, argue that the union's budget is the best instrument to help the region emerge from the financial crisis. A strong budget, they claim, is the best way to support investment, growth and jobs. Even countries that are net contributors to the EU benefit from its spending in the other countries, they say ? not least because the poorer members will then buy more of the richer member's exports.

Fifteen EU countries have joined together to form the Friends of Cohesion Policy, taking the name from the EU's "cohesion funds," which are intended to help the union hold together by investing in poorer areas so that the gap between the haves and have-nots becomes narrower. The EU countries in the group are: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain.

"Better spending does not rhyme with no spending," said Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, whose country is a major net recipient of EU money. In fact, all 15 members of the Friends of Cohesion Policy turn out to be net recipients.
