NEW DELHI (Commodity Online): The cummulative sales of tea in India through e-auction , introduced by Tea Board of India, across six centres crossed 1 billion kg mark on 22nd December, according to Tea Board of India.
India is the first country in the world to introduce e-auction in primary marketing of tea and it took off in November 2009 and Coonor is the first centre to conduct live e-auctions. Earlier, the attempts were made to introduce e-autions but did not work.
Seeing the remarkable success of tea e-auction, the stakeholders ensured that 100% of all teas sold in the six auction centres were through e-auctions. Presently, only Darjeeling tea is sold through the manual auction route in Kolkata, reported expressbuzz.com .
Tea board also plans to start e-auctions for tea waste, bulk tea and package tea.
India is ranked second in terms of production in the world and produces around 980 million kg of tea annually.
