How are you going to deal with Verizon's $2 'convenience' fee?

Verizon Fee

Let's face it, that Verizon will start charging an extra $2 a month to pay your bill in certain ways kinda sucks, no two ways about it. But companies don't do these sort of things just to see how we'll react. They know a goodly number of people will just pay their $24 a year and go about their business.

So how are you going to handle it?

Chavez muses on 'US cancer plot'

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has questioned the rash of cancer cases among Latin American leaders and asked if somehow the US might have a way to induce the illness.

Mr Chavez has long wondered whether the US government could be plotting to oust him, but his latest remarks went far beyond any such theories.

The leftist leader referred to the cancer diagnosis of Argentine president Cristina Fernandez, and noted that he and the leaders of Brazil and Paraguay have also struggled with the illness recently.

Mr Chavez called it very strange. He said he is not accusing the US and does not have any proof.

But he asked: "Would it be strange if they had developed a technology to induce cancer and no one knew it?"

North Koreans' Tears, Sadness Upon Kim Jong Il's Death (Time.com)

Ever since North Korea announced the death of Kim Jong Il, the wailing has come nonstop. From the woman in black on television, who announced that the Dear Leader had slipped these surly bonds of earth, to those who have gathered daily since then to moan and wail and beat their chests in agonized sadness, the North Koreans have shown that they do public grief better than anyone else.

And make no mistake: they have just begun to weep. Tomorrow, Dec. 28, when Kim Jong Il's funeral takes place in Pyongyang, the masses will be bawling and howling. They'll cry like few men (or women) have cried before. As the rest of the world has watched these scenes, most people are asking a very reasonable question: Are these people nuts? (See photos of Kim Jong Il lying in state.)

After all, it's not as if they had been living somewhere else when tens if not hundreds of thousands of their fellow North Koreans died of starvation in the late 1990s, the direct result of the ludicrous economic policies put in place by the Dear Leader. They walked past the corpses every day. "Everyone knew what was going on," says Kim Shin-yong, who defected from the North in 2002. Nor are they unaware that thousands of others have been flung into the country's notorious political prisons, many for no other reason than being related to somebody who had somehow offended the regime. Yet out they've come, crying their eyes out for a leader who is a sure-shot first-ballot entrant into the Despots Hall of Fame.

Why do they do it? The answer, as is usual in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), is complicated. Many psychologists who view these scenes from afar consider them legitimate. Raised in isolation and fed an unrelenting diet of personality-cult-driven propaganda for their entire lives, a people can feel rudderless and grief-stricken when they hear that Kim has joined his late father, the Great Leader Kim Il Sung, in the afterlife. Scott Atran, a psychologist at the University of Michigan, notes accurately enough that the people of North Korea were told from Day One that virtually everything they have came from the Dear Leader, "and they have no alternative form of reality." And mass grief, though particularly intense in North Korea, isn't wholly unique. Chinese of a certain age recall that when Mao Zedong died in 1976, many Chinese were shocked into tears that the father of their country was no longer with them.

But as Jane Bolton, a psychiatrist, wrote last year in Psychology Today, "a lot of misunderstanding happens around the act of crying," and in North Korea, is that ever true. There are reasons other than grief that enter into play that, to put it politely, would not be a factor elsewhere. Cheong Seong Chang, a longtime North Korea watcher in Seoul, notes that mid-level party officials, if they are seen to be wailing louder than co-workers, "might get promoted." (See 10 things you didn't know about North Korea's new leader Kim Jong Un.)

And it's what happens to that other guy -- the guy stupid enough not to be wailing in public -- that provides the real motivation. Scholars of the system in North Korea say that if you are out and about and happen upon a group of criers, you'd best be seen crying too -- particularly if there are cameras rolling. As Lee Sung Yoon, a researcher for the National Asia Research Program, told CNN recently, "If you're not devastated by the news, you might get in trouble."

North Korean defectors say you can eliminate the might from that sentence: the country, they claim, has a network of domestic informants that makes the old East German Stasi look like amateurs. The fact that the Dear Leader could preside over a famine like the one in the '90s and not have the regime even wobble shows just how tight a grip the government has on its benighted population.

The question -- almost unknowable from the outside -- is, What happens behind closed doors? Are the Koreans still crying? North Korea watchers observe that there is less intensity to the public displays of grief this time than when Kim Il Sung, the founder of the DPRK, died in 1994. They further note that the population is not quite as ignorant of the outside world today as it was back then. Modern technologies (cell phones and DVDs from South Korea and China) find their way into the country these days. Thousands defected in the wake of the famine, and many figured out ways to get messages back to friends and relatives about what life is like in China -- or in South Korea, if they are lucky enough to make it that far. (See pictures of the busy life of Kim Jong Il.)

Still, clues about what North Koreans actually think are maddeningly elusive. You take them where you can and try to fit them into the puzzle. Consider this: I spent a few days visiting a new university just outside Pyongyang about two weeks before Kim Jong Il died. The school is attended by elite kids, many of them connected to senior levels of government or the military. Some of the faculty and administration of this experimental new school -- all of whom are foreigners -- were on campus when the announcement of Kim's death came. I asked one person how the students had reacted to the news. Was there wailing, gnashing of teeth, rending of garments? "They were quiet, definitely," this person said. "But there was no crying."

None? "No. None that I saw."

Which was a relief to hear. The kids who attend this school are anything but stupid. They know a bit about the outside world, but they are also very much products of the regime. That there wasn't a damp eye in the house is not, frankly, what I was expecting to hear. Remember that the next time you see news footage of what one friend of mine in Seoul calls "the great North Korean wailing contest." Not everything is as it seems in North Korea, and they're not as nuts as they look.

India's tea sales through e auction crosses 1 billion kg mark

Last Updated : 28 December 2011 at 13:30 IST

NEW DELHI (Commodity Online): The cummulative sales of tea in India through e-auction , introduced by Tea Board of India, across six centres crossed 1 billion kg mark on 22nd December, according to Tea Board of India.

India is the first country in the world to introduce e-auction in primary marketing of tea and it took off in November 2009 and Coonor is the first centre to conduct live e-auctions. Earlier, the attempts were made to introduce e-autions but did not work.

Seeing the remarkable success of tea e-auction, the stakeholders ensured that 100% of all teas sold in the six auction centres were through e-auctions. Presently, only Darjeeling tea is sold through the manual auction route in Kolkata, reported expressbuzz.com .

Tea board also plans to start e-auctions for tea waste, bulk tea and package tea.

India is ranked second in terms of production in the world and produces around 980 million kg of tea annually.

JXD S7100 Android Gaming Tablet/Handset Boasts Galaxy S II ...

We?ve seen quite a few Android gaming handsets make their way out of China and while the JXD S7100 doesn?t look much different, it?s what this handset has on the inside that really caught our eye. Boasting specs more along the lines of a Galaxy S II device, the JXD offers almost the same processor with a dual-core Cortex A-9 processor and Mali 400 graphics core powering the device. This makes the JXD more than capable of most graphics intensive Android titles as long as they don?t require anything over Android 2.2, which the device comes shipped with. Also found inside the device is 512MB of RAM, 2MP rear/.3MP front facing cameras, 16GB of internal storage and HDMI out. A huge 7-inch touchscreen display can be found on front with a resolution of 800?480.

The JXD S7100 laughably advertises ?Apple games? and most will find greater use with the available emulator apps for Android than its own custom app center. I?d say the most appeal is in its $140 price-tag making this an almost instant buy should you come across this at your local swap meet. If you want to see the JXD in action, check out the video below ? oh, and you?re going to want to turn your speakers up.

Esther Wojcicki: Give Yourself A Free University Education at University of the People

Here is a Christmas-Hannukah gift you can give yourself, a loved one, a friend, or the world---A university education online for free. Is this some kind of trick?

Nope, it isn't a trick. It is a new university called University of the People (appropriately named) but the degrees are limited in scope right now since the University is fairly new. But the important ones are there.

It is the world's first tuition-free online academic institution dedicated to the global advancement and democratization of higher education.

Just go to their website and check it out for yourself.

The vision of University of the People is that "universal access to education is a key to world peace and global economic development." I agree and I am sure most people would.

Their program is all online. In the U.S., approximately 4 million students are currently enrolled in online education many of them in University of Phoenix, a for profit institution that has a large variety of course offerings, but it is expensive. On the other hand, University of the People provides an unprecedented tuition-free online academic experience to a worldwide-audience.

So far they offer four degree programs. All of these degrees are in areas where there is job growth---business administration and computer science. In the U.S. we have hundreds of computer science jobs that go unfilled each year. We need more computer science majors to meet our technological needs worldwide. We need businesspeople to be entrepreneurs and start new businesses.

For those who are job hunting, you might want to consider signing up for one of these courses They are accessible on your computer at home for free. No commuting, no travel expenses. It is right there on your desk.

Here are the four degrees offered at the University of the People:
1)Associate (A.S.-B.A.) and 2) Bachelor (B.S.-B.A.) degrees in Business Administration
3)Associate (A.S.-C.S.) and 4) Bachelor (B.S.-C.S.) degrees in Computer Science.

How can University of the People offer degrees for free? It is a non-profit organization and it accepts donations; these donations support many of the students. The University is supported by companies, foundations and individuals. Some students pay the low fees.

Presently, it has 300 students from 50 countries around the world. It costs just $4,000K for a student to go to the university for four years. Compare that with the tuition costs of $100,000 for four years at many universities.

The founder Shai Reshef understands the education world. He is an experienced entrepreneur who was Chairman of the Kidum Group a for-profit educational services company which he later sold to Kaplan, one of the world's largest education companies and a subsidiary of the Washington Post. Business Week recently wrote an article about Shai and the university.

Those who would like to support a student at the University of the People, can donate online. Any amount is welcome and it is tax deductible. Imagine being able to change someone's life for the better. Turns out that it would cost only $6 million to educate everyone in the world at University of the People, according to Shai. Not much when you consider how much we spend on just defense.

For those of you who want give yourself a gift of a degree, go online and fill out an application to enroll. It is an exciting opportunity and the time of year to be giving.

Linux VPS Vs. Windows VPS: Making An Informed Decision

Linux VPS Vs. Windows VPS: Making An Informed Decision

One of the most important decisions you?ll have to make when choosing a virtual private server (VPS) is whether a Linux or Windows-based option is right for you. While dedicated IT professionals will often swear by one system or another, it is often less clear which one provides a greater benefit for small and medium-sized businesses. While many basic functions are shared between the two, there are several notable differences that may help tip the scales.

Similarities in a Linux and Windows VPS

Both a Windows and a Linux VPS will operate in the same basic way ? by dividing a physical server into virtual slices that can be occupied by your business, allowing you to store data and run applications. This division can happen using either the Linux kernel for container-based virtualization or the Windows Hyper-V hypervisor which creates parent and child partitions that support multiple server slices. Both Windows and Linux VPS options support PHP and MySQL and give you access to a set of resources you can scale up as they are needed; it?s the details that make the difference.

Windows VPS Benefits

There are a number of benefits to choosing a Windows-based VPS, starting with a more familiar graphical user interface (GUI). The Windows GUI is well-known and easy to use, and is especially helpful if you?re just getting into the world of virtual private servers. In addition, a Windows Hyper-V/Server 2008 combination will offer support for ASP and ASP.NET for website hosting, something that a Linux VPS doesn?t excel at. Remote desktop access is also a benefit for Windows VPS, which allows direct access from anywhere to your VPS server via your GUI. This makes configuration and server management far easier than through the text-based SSH interface offered by Linux solutions. You?ll also get better support for Microsoft SQL and Microsoft Access ? while they may work with Linux, they are work natively with Windows.

Linux VPS Benefits

One of the key benefits to a Linux VPS is cost ? because Linux is an open-source program, many virtual private server plans are cheaper with a Linux option instead of Windows. Most Linux server applications are also available freely, and while support for certain distributions of Linux may not be as robust as that for Windows, you will not need to bear the cost of licensing fees. Linux also offers you greater choice when it comes to VPS control panels ? while the Plesk panel will work with both Windows and Linux VPS solutions, cPanel can only be used with Linux. You?ll also typically see a greater level of reliability from Linux-based options because of the passionate community support that many flavors of the OS enjoy. Linux can be optimized to work in almost any environment, providing increased performance overall. SSH Access also offers a benefit for Linux VPS users ? while it is more complicated to use because it is text-based, the lack of a heavy GUI will lighten your server load, so to speak.

Ultimately, the choice between a Linux and Windows VPS comes down to which OS offers you the best value for your dollar. Linux is a great option for businesses owners that are more technically adept or that want direct control over their server via SSH. Linux also has more variants of its OS to choose from. Windows solutions, meanwhile, work seamlessly right out of the virtual box and, when Hyper-V is combined with Windows Server R2 2008, can provide ease of use along with live migration services and failover protection in the form of high availability (HA) clustering.

Welles' Oscar for 'Citizen Kane' sells for $861K

(AP) ? The Academy Award statuette that Orson Welles won for the original screenplay of "Citizen Kane" was auctioned for more than $861,000 Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Nate D. Sanders Auctions spokesman Sam Heller said bidders from around the world, including David Copperfield, vied for the Oscar.

The 1942 Oscar was thought to be lost for decades. It surfaced in 1994 when cinematographer Gary Graver tried to sell it. The sale was stopped by Beatrice Welles, Orson's youngest daughter and sole heir.

Copperfield, who was outbid in the auction, said he admires Welles not only for his cinematic successes, but because he, too, was a magician. Welles hosted Copperfield's first television special.

The auction house declined to release the highest bidder's name. It said only a handful of Academy Awards have sold for nearly a million dollars.

Michael Jackson paid $1.54 million in 1999 for the best picture Oscar awarded to David O. Selznick for "Gone With The Wind."

Is Strauss-Kahn staging a political comeback ? on his wife's coattails?

Former IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn, whose political life seemed over after sexual assault accusations, is back with a speech criticizing the EU. Does this, and his wife's selection as 'Woman of the Year,' signal his comeback?

Seven months ago, accused of sexually assaulting?a hotel maid, Dominique Strauss-Kahn was a man for whom time appeared to have run out.

The prominent managing director of the International Monetary Fund, the man who was poised to be the Socialist Party's presidential candidate challenging French President Nicolas Sarkozy, was finished, termin?, in the eyes of many. But yesterday, Mr. Strauss-Kahn made his first foray back into public life, giving a well-publicized speech to a Chinese-based Internet firm, blasting Europe for the eurozone crisis. And on the same day, Strauss-Kahn?s wife, Anne Sinclair, was named ?Woman of the Year? in a public opinion poll for her ?loyalty and courage? in standing by her man.

In his speech to the Chinese Internet company NetEase in Beijing, Strauss-Kahn let it be known he was not impressed with the restructuring of the European Union?s single-currency zone, hammered together by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Strauss-Kahn?s apparent rival, French President Sarkozy.

?None of the main problems has been addressed,? he said. ?There?s no central budget in Europe, no institutional centres, no lender of last resort, no expansion of the monetary policy.?

The French paper Le Monde carried more from Strauss-Kahn?s speech, which is translated here:

"With the recent storm, the raft seems not to?be?strong enough,? he said, speaking of the eurozone.??The fact that the euro is still in the middle of the river and that the union budget is not completed makes it very, very vulnerable, and the raft seems about to sink. (...)?I am not convinced that [French President] Sarkozy and [German Chancellor] Madame?Merkel will understand each other and this is probably one of the reasons why the European system has problems ahead,? he said.

Is it because the French public is, like Strauss-Kahn, pessimistic about the Eurozone bailout plan, or is it because they are simply sick of Sarkozy? Whatever the reasons, the French seem more than willing to overlook or move past Strauss-Kahn?s fall from grace?and see him return to the public stage.

Strauss-Kahn was?accused of sexually assaulting a hotel maid in New York City last May. Before that, he was the main challenger to Sarkozy in the upcoming 2012 presidential elections. Instead, he was escorted off his plane back to France in handcuff and put through a ?perp walk? by New York City police.
