Alien Earths could form earlier than expected

ScienceDaily (June 13, 2012) ? Building a terrestrial planet requires raw materials that weren't available in the early history of the universe. The Big Bang filled space with hydrogen and helium. Chemical elements like silicon and oxygen -- key components of rocks -- had to be cooked up over time by stars. But how long did that take? How many of such heavy elements do you need to form planets?

Previous studies have shown that Jupiter-sized gas giants tend to form around stars containing more heavy elements than the Sun. However, new research by a team of astronomers found that planets smaller than Neptune are located around a wide variety of stars, including those with fewer heavy elements than the Sun. As a result, rocky worlds like Earth could have formed earlier than expected in the universe's history.

"This work suggests that terrestrial worlds could form at almost any time in our galaxy's history," said Smithsonian astronomer David Latham (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics). "You don't need many earlier generations of stars."

Latham played a lead role in the study, which was led by Lars A. Buchhave from the University of Copenhagen and will be published in the journal Nature. The work is being presented June 13 at the 220th meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

Astronomers call chemical elements heavier than hydrogen and helium "metals." They measure the metal content, or metallicities, of other stars using the Sun as a benchmark. Stars with more heavy elements are considered metal-rich while stars with fewer heavy elements are considered metal-poor.

Latham and his colleagues examined more than 150 stars known to have planets, based on data from NASA's Kepler spacecraft. They measured the stars' metallicities and correlated that with the sizes of the associated planets. Large planets tended to orbit stars with solar metallicities or higher. Smaller worlds, though, were found around metal-rich and metal-poor stars alike.

"Giant planets prefer metal-rich stars. Little ones don't," explained Latham.

They found that terrestrial planets form at a wide range of metallicities, including systems with only one-quarter of the Sun's metal content.

Their discovery supports the "core accretion" model of planet formation. In this model, primordial dust accumulates into mile-sized planetesimals that then coalesce into full-fledged planets. The largest, weighing 10 times Earth, can then gather surrounding hydrogen and become a gas giant.

A gas giant's core must form quickly since hydrogen in the protoplanetary disk dissipates rapidly, swept away by stellar winds in just a few million years. Higher metallicities might support the formation of large cores, explaining why we're more likely to find a gas giant orbiting a metal-rich star.

"This result fits with the core accretion model of planet formation in a natural way," said Latham.

'House Hunters' fake? Possibly, but does it matter? - From Inside the ...

house-hunters-logo-hgtv.jpgHere's a truth we should all probably learn to accept sooner rather than later: Reality TV? Not all real. So the recent claim that HGTV's incredibly addictive "House Hunters" might actually be staged (gasp!) shouldn't come as too much of a surprise.

According to a reader of the site HookedonHouses.net named Bobbi, she and her husband appeared on an episode of "House Hunters," but their reality was much different than the one portrayed on TV. For starters, they were only cast after they had closed on their new house, and then producers made them change their reason for moving from "wanted to use old house as a rental property" to "wanted more square footage."

This is not the first time someone's come forward and said something similar about the reality hit, but it's certainly gotten more traction than ever.

HGTV responded to the kerfuffle in a statement to Entertainment Weekly: "We've learned that the pursuit of the perfect home involves big decisions that usually take place over a prolonged period of time -- more time than we can capture in 30 minutes of television. However, with a series like 'House Hunters,' HGTV viewers enjoy the vicarious and entertaining experience of choosing a home -- from establishing a budget, to touring properties and weighing the pros and cons of each one. We're making a television show, so we manage certain production and time constraints, while honoring the home buying process.

The statement continues: "To maximize production time, we seek out families who are pretty far along in the process. Often everything moves much more quickly than we can anticipate, so we go back and revisit some of the homes that the family has already seen and we capture their authentic reactions. Because the stakes in real estate are so high, these homeowners always find themselves RIGHT back in the moment, experiencing the same emotions and reactions to these properties. Showcasing three homes makes it easier for our audience to 'play along' and guess which one the family will select. It's part of the joy of the 'House Hunters' viewing experience. Through the lens of television, we can offer a uniquely satisfying and fun viewing experience that fulfills a universal need to occasionally step into someone else's shoes."

Any person with common sense knows that there's an inherent element of deception in any reality show. Can you really capture someone's genuine reaction to something with gazillions of cameras pointed in their face?

The real question is: Does it matter? For many, reality TV is all about an escape. With "HH," there's the added curiosity factor of peering into other people's houses. But there's also the educational factor -- this is the first time many people are exposed to the home-buying process, so should there be a responsibility to make the show as true-to-life as possible?

Honestly, it could go either way. What do you think? Are you surprised about the allegations? Do you care that parts of "House Hunters" are staged?

Director John Frame Discusses 'Three Fragments of a Lost Tale ...

This week, we're bringing you an exclusive interview with Director John Frame, whose film,?Three Fragments of a Lost Tale, was screened as part of NewFilmmakers Los Angeles at Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood, CA. Get to know Frame and his film, goals and upcoming projects.?

Tell us a little bit about your project and how long you?ve been working on it.?

Three Fragments of a Lost Tale is an ongoing project whose end goal is a feature-length collection of animated and live film vignettes. Over the last six years, with help from only a few family members and close friends, I have created thirty-five individual characters, built the sets, photographed the work, completed and scored approximately twelve minutes of animation, while treating each element as a work of art in its own right. Perhaps unlike many other filmmakers, my inspiration comes from the other arts as much as or more than film. I am driven by the desire to create a completely different approach to making films, one that is based on every element involved being a standalone work of art. ?So the characters themselves, are pieces of sculpture that can be and are exhibited in major art museums. ?The photographs are individual works of art that are shown in galleries and finally the films themselves are much more like visual poetry than traditional films.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping out with this film?

My Editor and co-animator Johnny Coffeen and the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens which took the exhibition and films before anyone else did.

How does it feel to have your film part of the NewFilmmakers Screening at Sunset Gower Studios?

Good. ?It?s our first outing with them and we are looking forward to the experience.

I am inspired by the desire to touch people with the work I do. ?My primary goal is not to entertain as much as to move the audience in ways that may be unfamiliar to them but meaningful all the same.

Who are your influences and who do you admire?

On the Cinema side I most admire the work of Imgmar Bergman, Kurosawa, Powell and Pressberger, Tarkovsky and Felinni. ?In animation, Ladislaw Starewich. ?My major influences come from literature, music, dance and poetry.

What lessons have you learned from the industry so far?

In my case, I?m afraid the Industry tells me more about what not to do than what to do. ?My interest is exclusively in film as art form and not as entertainment, so I?m at the other end of the spectrum from the industry standards and practices.

If you could collaborate with anybody, who would it be?

What is the toughest experience you've ever had to overcome?

Finding the correct venues for the work had been a serious problem. ?In the end, we have decided that the work does best in the art world (museums) and we may very well be withdrawing the films from the film world altogether. ?Other than that, working primarily alone, the technical demands of running Final Cut and Logic have been pretty tough. ? Funding has been and remains a serious problem, one that we overcome mainly by donations from people who support what we are trying to do.

What is the best piece of advice someone has given to you?

Can?t think of any. ?I live and work in almost complete isolation. ?There has been little input to our films in the form of advice.

What advice would you give to new filmmakers starting out in the industry?

Make yourself into someone with something genuine to say. ?What we don?t need now is more cookie cutter films made by cookie cutter people. Don?t worry about what you do, concern yourself with who you are. ?The work will follow.

Where can we expect to see you next?

Three to five years with Part II of the Tale of the Crippled Boy. ?

Let our readers know where they can find more information about you and your projects.?

Sony announces the Xperia Miro

Android Central

Sony's countdown timer has reached zero (a good week or so ahead of the original date), and the manufacturer has announced its new mid-range, social-focused smartphone, and the Xperia Miro.

Unveiled initially on Sony Mobile's Facebook page, the Xperia Miro takes some design cues from the Xperia Sola. It's a sleek-looking 3.5-inch device with a 5MP camera, and that's about all Sony's saying on hardware for the time being. On the software side you've got Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, backed up by Sony's UXP NXT software. Based on the promo video that Sony's just published, there's been some expansion of the company's "Facebook Inside Xperia" initiative, bringing even closer integration between the phone and the social network (and it also explains the Facebook-centric promo campaign, we guess).

The Xperia Miro looks to be a Europe-only device for now, and there's no word on US availability just yet. As you'll see from our image above, the Miro is a colorful beast, coming in silver, black, pink and gold. If you want to see more, we've got a few extra pictures after the break, along with Sony's announcement video.

Naturally occurring protein has role in chronic pain

ScienceDaily (June 12, 2012) ? Researchers in France and Sweden have discovered how one of the body's own proteins is involved in generating chronic pain in rats. The results, which also suggest therapeutic interventions to alleviate long-lasting pain, are reported in The EMBO Journal.

Chronic pain is persistent and often difficult to treat. It is due, at least in part, to changes in molecular signalling events that take place in neurons, alterations that can ultimately disrupt the transmission of nerve signals from the spinal cord to the brain.

"We are fortunate to have a wide range of technologies that allow us to look more precisely at the molecular events that lead to the onset of chronic pain in animals," said Marc Landry, lead author of the study and Professor at the University of Bordeaux.

"Our results show that the levels of the naturally occurring protein 14-3-3 zeta are higher in the spinal cord of rats that have chronic pain. Moreover, we have been able to demonstrate how 14-3-3 zeta triggers changes in the signalling pathway that leads to the symptoms of chronic pain."

The 14-3-3 zeta protein disrupts the interaction between the two subunits of the GABAB receptor, a protein complex found on the surface of nerve cells. GABAB receptors are G-protein coupled receptors, a family of receptors that regulate many physiological processes and which are frequently targeted for drug development.

The researchers used antibody labelling and microscopy techniques to investigate the molecular interactions of the signalling proteins. In cells and living animals, they were able to show that the 14-3-3 zeta protein interacts directly with the B1 subunit of the GABAB receptor. This interaction impairs the effective signalling of the receptor and limits the pain-relieving effects of the GABAB receptor under conditions of chronic pain.

The researchers also showed that the treatment of rats with a specific small interfering RNA (siRNA) or a competing peptide, molecules that interfere with the action of the 14-3-3 zeta protein, inhibited chronic pain.

"The impairment of the GABAB receptor by 14-3-3 zeta is a novel mechanism for the modulation of chronic pain," said Landry. "We see potential in combining the use of inhibitors that interfere with the action of 14-3-3 zeta together with existing drug treatments like Baclofen for chronic pain. Targeting the GABAB dissociation process may be of therapeutic interest since it may allow classical pain killers to be more effective."
