Kosovo demands investigation into ex-U.N. prosecutor del Ponte

PRISTINA (Reuters) - Kosovo called on Sunday for an investigation into the work of former United Nations chief prosecutor Carla del Ponte after the country's former prime minister was acquitted for a second time on war crimes charges brought by the Swiss lawyer.

Ramush Haradinaj, a Kosovo Albanian former guerilla commander who served briefly as prime minister, was cleared last week of crimes against humanity in a retrial at the U.N. tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague.

Judges ruled there was no evidence to support charges against him of crimes against humanity during the 1998-99 war between guerrillas of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) and security forces under late Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic.

In a statement, Kosovo's government accused del Ponte of abuse of power and of damaging the image of the country, which won independence from Serbia in 2008.

"These powers and privileges were exceeded and abused to the extent that completely unfounded charges were filed," it said, complaining the reputation of those accused and of the state had been "blackened".

"The government urges the secretary general of the tribunal, the United Nations as well as other international authorities to begin investigating her illegal actions."

Officials at the Hague tribunal were not immediately available to comment on the statement.

The charges were brought by del Ponte in 2005 against Haradinaj, who was first acquitted in 2008.

Del Ponte is currently part of a U.N. commission tasked with gathering evidence of alleged war crimes in Syria, having worked between 1999 and 2008 at the U.N.'s tribunal for the former Yugoslavia based in The Hague.

Of six Kosovo Albanians charged with war crimes during Kosovo's 1998-99 guerrilla insurgency to break away from Serbia, only one conviction still stands.

The Haradinaj verdict dealt a fresh blow to U.N. prosecutors after the acquittal on appeal two weeks earlier of Croatian general Ante Gotovina for crimes against Serbs during a 1995 military offensive.

Prosecutors have complained of widespread witness intimidation in Kosovo, where the guerrilla Kosovo Liberation Army enjoys hero-status and clan loyalties run deep.

The other most prominent Kosovo Albanian indictee, Fatmir Limaj, was acquitted at the tribunal in 2005, but faces similar charges brought by the European Union's police and justice mission in Kosovo.

Cell surface transporters exploited for cancer drug delivery

ScienceDaily (Dec. 2, 2012) ? Whitehead Institute scientists report that certain molecules present in high concentrations on the surfaces of many cancer cells could be exploited to funnel lethal toxic molecules into the malignant cells. In such an approach, the overexpression of specific transporters could be exploited to deliver toxic substances into cancer cells.

Although this finding emerges from the study of a single toxic molecule and the protein that it transports, Whitehead Member David Sabatini says this phenomenon could be leveraged more broadly.

"Our work suggests a different strategy for cancer therapy that takes advantage of the capacity of a cancer cell to take up something toxic that a normal cell does not," says Sabatini, who is also a professor of biology at MIT and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigator. "As a result, that toxic molecule would kill the cancer cell. By identifying transporters on the surface of cancer cells, you might be able to find a molecule that a specific transporter would carry into the cell, and that molecule would be toxic to that cell. You really could have something that's much more selective to cancer cells."

The Sabatini lab's research is published online December 2 in the journal Nature Genetics.

Kivanc Birsoy, a postdoctoral researcher in Sabatini's lab and first author of the Nature Genetics paper, used a special line of haploid cells developed by former Whitehead Fellow Thijn Brummelkamp to screen for genes that assist cellular entry of 3-bromopyruvate's (3-BrPA), a potential cancer drug in clinical development. 3-BrPA is thought to work by inhibiting glycolysis, a cellular process that releases energy by splitting glucose molecules. Because many cancer cells are heavily dependent on the upregulation of glycolysis, drugs that interrupt this pathway may be effective in targeting these glycolytic cancer cells.

From the screen and massively parallel sequencing, Birsoy identified the gene that codes for the protein monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1), which is necessary and sufficient for 3-BrPA's transport into cells, where the toxic molecule ultimately kills them. In fact, the level of MCT1 on the surface of glycolytic tumor cells is a predictor of those cells' sensitivity to 3-BrPA -- the higher the cells' expression of MCT1, the more sensitive they are to 3-BrPA. This holds true in in vitro and in vivo models across multiple lines of human cancer cells.

The correlation between MCT1 concentration and 3-BrPA sensitivity could be used to help determine how certain malignant tumors are treated.

"This study makes MCT1 a biomarker for 3-BrPA," says Birsoy. "So in the future, if 3-BrPA is approved as a drug, presumably you could predict if a patient's cancer tumor is going to be sensitive by looking at the levels of this molecule. No tumor without MCT1 would respond to treatment with 3-BrPA."

This work was supported by the National Institutes of Health (CA103866), the David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, the Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund, and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Kazakhstan lauds leader on new holiday

(AP) ? Kazakhstan is observing a new holiday lauding President Nursultan Nazarbayev, part of a growing cult of personality around the leader of the sprawling, resource-rich former Soviet republic.

The highlight of Saturday's celebration of President's Day, which marks the anniversary of Nazarbayev's first election in 1991, was a carefully choreographed pageant by some 30,000 performers in an arena in the capital Astana, including mass singing and banner-waving.

The 72-year-old Nazarbayev exercises extraordinary dominion over Kazakhstan's political life. In the most recent presidential election in 2010, he pushed aside three token rivals to win 95 percent of the vote. International monitors criticized the election as unfair.

He receives blanket, praiseful coverage from state news media, while the government has cracked down on independent outlets.

North Korea sets timeframe for rocket launch

North Korea announced Saturday that it would attempt to launch a long-range rocket in mid-December, a defiant move coming just eight months after a failed April bid that was widely condemned as a violation of a U.N. ban against developing nuclear and missile programs.

The launch, set for Dec. 10 to 22, is likely to heighten already strained tensions with Washington and Seoul as the United States prepares for Barack Obama's second term as U.S. president and South Korea holds its own presidential election on Dec. 19.

This would be North Korea's second launch attempt under leader Kim Jong Un, who took power following his father Kim Jong Il's death nearly a year ago. The announcement by North Korea's space agency followed speculation overseas about stepped-up activity at North Korea's west coast launch pad captured in satellite imagery.

A spokesman for North Korea's Korean Committee for Space Technology said scientists have "analyzed the mistakes" made in the failed April launch and improved the precision of its Unha rocket and Kwangmyongsong satellite, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

KCNA said the launch was a request of late leader Kim Jong Il, who died last Dec. 17. North Koreans are expected to mark the anniversary with some fanfare. The space agency said the rocket would be mounted with a polar-orbiting Earth observation satellite, and maintained its right to develop a peaceful space program.

Long-range missile test?
Washington considers North Korea's rocket launches to be veiled covers for tests of technology for long-range missiles designed to strike the United States, and such tests are banned by the United Nations.

North Korea has capable short- and medium-range missiles, but long-range launches in 1998, 2006, 2009 and in April of this year ended in failure. North Korea is not known to have succeeded in mounting an atomic bomb on a missile, but is believed to have enough weaponized plutonium for at least half a dozen bombs, according to U.S. experts. In 2010, the Pyongyang government revealed a uranium enrichment program that could provide a second source of material for nuclear weapons.

Six-nation negotiations on dismantling North Korea's nuclear program in exchange for aid fell apart in early 2009.

In Seoul, South Korean officials have accused North Korea of trying to influence its presidential election with what they consider provocations meant to put pressure on voters and on the United States as the North seeks concessions. Conservative Park Geun-hye, the daughter of late President Park Chung-hee, is facing liberal Moon Jae-in in the South Korean presidential vote. Polls show the candidates in a close race.

Some analysts, however, question whether North Korean scientists have corrected whatever caused the misfire of its last rocket.

"Preparing for a launch less than a year after a failure calls into question whether the North could have analyzed and fixed whatever went wrong," David Wright, a physicist with the Union of Concerned Scientists, wrote on the organization's website this week.

US says launch would be 'highly provocative'
The United States has criticized North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles as a threat to Asian and world security. In 2009, North Korea conducted rocket and nuclear tests within months of Obama taking office.

"A North Korean 'satellite' launch would be a highly provocative act," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said in Washington. "Any North Korean launch using ballistic missile technology is in direct violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions."

North Korea under its young leader has pledged to bolster its nuclear arsenal unless Washington scraps what the North calls a "hostile" policy. North Korea maintains that it is building bombs to defend itself against what it sees as a U.S. nuclear threat in the region.

This year is the centennial of the birth of national founder Kim Il Sung, the grandfather of Kim Jong Un. According to North Korean propaganda, 2012 is meant to put the North on a path toward a "strong, prosperous and great nation."

"North Korea appears to be under pressure to redeem its April launch failure before the year of the 'strong, prosperous and great nation' ends," said Koh Yu-hwan, a North Korea expert at Dongguk University in Seoul.

He added that a successful rocket launch would raise North Korea's bargaining power with South Korea and the United States "because it means the country is closer to developing missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads."

No official notification
Before its last two rocket launches, North Korea notified the International Civil Aviation Organization and the International Maritime Organization about its intentions to launch. IMO spokeswoman Natasha Brown said that as of Friday the organization had not been notified by North Korea.

The North's announcement comes two days after South Korea canceled what would have been the launch of its first satellite from its own territory. Scientists in Seoul cited technical difficulties. South Korea's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the North's planned launch is "a grave provocation and a head-on challenge to the international community."

North Korea's missile and nuclear programs will be a challenge for Obama in his second term and for the incoming South Korean leader. Washington's most recent attempt to negotiate a freeze of the North's nuclear program and a test moratorium in exchange for food aid collapsed with the April launch.

In Japan, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said he would coordinate with the U.S., South Korea, China and Russia in strongly urging the North to refrain from the rocket launch. Kyodo News agency said Japan also postponed high-level talks with North Korea scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.

The Korean Peninsula remains in a state of war because the 1950-53 Korean conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty. Washington stations nearly 30,000 troops in South Korea as a buttress against any North Korean aggression. Tens of thousands more are in nearby Japan.

Online Fitness Startup Wello Raises $1 Million From Kleiner Perkins ...

Online fitness marketplace Wello launched earlier this summer to enable users to get private, one-on-one training sessions ? but to do so in the comfort of their own homes. Now the startup has raised a $1 million seed round of financing from investors in healthcare incubator Rock Health, such as Kleiner Perkins, Mohr Davidow, Aberdare Ventures, and Mayo Ventures. Others include Morado Ventures, S-Cubed Capital, PhilQuo Ventures, and other angels.

Wello provides a marketplace to connect trainers with clients, but does so with live video sessions over the Internet. The idea is to help people who don?t have time to go to the gym or don?t want to do so to get personalized training through live video sessions. That?s right ? no travel, no embarrassing workouts in front of the actual fit people at the gym. Just you, in your home, receiving personalized instruction by video.

Customers can choose from a variety of different training regimens, from yoga and Pilates to kickboxing and strength training. The startup has more than 150 different trainers and fitness professionals signed up to provide sessions from all across the U.S. All trainers are vetted to check out their certifications and references, and are run through trial sessions to see how well they do in a streaming video environment. When they do connect with a client, they can provide a more personalized workout than someone would get from a typical class environment.

So far, the model seems to be working with early users: More than two-third of those who try a workout come back for another, and repeat users have racked up an average of 5.5 sessions a month. Trainers, meanwhile, benefit by being able to set their own hours and getting paid a much larger fraction than they would make at the local gym. Users can choose between 25-, 40-, and 55-minute sessions, and Wello co-founder Leslie Silverglide says group sessions will be coming soon.

Silverglide told me the funding will be used to add a few engineers and new members to the marketing team to help scale and get the word out. The company has TK employees and is based in San Francisco.

Wello is a website that brings trainers and clients together for fun, personalized and convenient training sessions over live, two-way video. For clients, Wello enables them to workout anywhere they have their laptop and enjoy a personal trainer experience without being tied to the gym. For trainers, Wello increases revenue opportunities by filling open times of their day.
