Benefits of ETF Investing | ETF Trends

ETFs are appealing to investors for various reasons. As recent price wars rage on, there are many other factors that make these funds desirable to investors besides low cost.

?Exchange traded funds have gained immense popularity in the recent past, given their holistic investment approach and tax efficiency, coupled with flexibility and ease of investing. ETFs can be viewed as the ultimate asset allocation instrument providing investors a ready made portfolio of stocks or fixed income securities or both,? Eric Dutram wrote for Zack?s. [The Shifting ETF Landscape]

A broad group of investors are finding ETFs appealing as they study their current portfolios of mutual funds and single stocks, Christian Magoon wrote on Nasdaq.com.

The access that ETFs give retail investors is one reason that these tools are appreciated by investors. The easy investment to niche corners of the market and sectors is a trait that ETFs have, at a reasonable cost. Plus, asset classes, bonds, commodities, futures contracts, currencies and grantor trusts can all be accessed with a targeted ETF.

Transparency of holdings is another favorable characteristic of ETFs. The transparency is also available in real time, not just at the close of a trading day. The daily transparency that an ETF has can help investors with asset allocation and avoid over or under exposure to a certain stock or sector. [Sector Investing with ETFs]

Diversification is another area that an ETF satisfies. The ability to give an investor a well-rounded basket of stocks tracking a sector or country is just one example. Other areas that ETF diversification can assist with is portfolio construction, proper asset allocation and risk mitigation. By investing in a basket of numerous companies, if one stock does not do so well, the downside is eased because there is less exposure to the failing company.

The benefits of ETFs extend beyond this list, and most investors will not realize them until they have invested in them. While low cost is a huge advantage of using ETFs, it is certainly not the only one. [Schwab Takes the Lead in ETF Price War]

LG Display countersues Samsung over OLED patent infringement

Samsung 55-inch OLED TV at CES

The strained relationship between the two tentpoles of Korea's tech industry is starting to wear, now that LG Display has counter-sued its local rival over OLED patents. Earlier this month, Samsung filed for an injunction accusing its frenemy of stealing secrets, but LG is claiming instead that it's the victim. If successful, Lucky Goldstar would seek a ban on devices including the Galaxy S III, Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Note on the pair's home turf -- so, yeah, this one looks like it's going to run and run.

NDP Children and Family critic demands change to - Cknw.com

Shane Woodford | Email news tips to shane.woodford@corusent.com
9/26/2012

The NDP are condemning the provincial government for aborting the fall sitting of the legislature after the latest update on child poverty in BC.

?Children and Family critic Claire Trevena says the report shows politicians need to be working on solutions in Victoria.

?She calls a disproportionately large number of first nations kids affected by child poverty a "huge problem."

?"Which underlines why we need to have a province wide poverty reduction plan the Minister has heard directly from some of these communities that have a pilot project and these communties are saying it doesn't work the way you have it because the Ministery of Children and Families is involved we have to have a province wide approach."

?Trevena calls the deaths of 101 children either in foster care or recieving services by the ministry, a tragedy.

?"There is clearly something going very wrong when a child in care dies we have to really provide the best protection possible right the way through from birth all the way through teen and into young adulthood and I think we let our kids down there aren't the supports in place needed there are lots of pressures in many families facing severe poverty."

?Trevena says sweeping changes, and lots of them, is exactly the problem.

?"I think that one of the things that is really needed in this area is stability there has been too many sweeping changes I think that this is one of the things that has been a real problem for the Ministry of Children and Family Development that it has gone from one extreme to the other and back I think what we need is we need stability and we need to work on the root causes of why many times children end up in care and that is often times because of poverty."

?She says the province needs to work on root causes for child poverty.

Tycoon offers $65M to man who woos gay daughter

Cecil Chao Sze-tung is Hong Kong's perennial playboy. Call him the city's Hugh Hefner, minus the pajamas and add a pair of shades.

Never married, real estate and shipping tycoon Chao, 76, has been a staple of the Hong Kong tabloid and social rags since the 1970s. For over 40 years he's proudly paraded what seems to be an endless supply of female arm candy in front of the flashing bulbs.

Tales of his romantic dalliances are tabloid staples. He once boasted about having slept with over 10,000 women. Just last year the septuagenarian Chinese Casanova, as to prove his virility has not been dashed by time, posed in a magazine photo spread surrounded by young bikini-clad models.

He has fathered three children from three different women.

He has thumbed his nose at the institution of marriage. Until this week.

Chao's respect for a traditional marriage was prompted by his daughter Gigi, 33, being quoted recently in the Beijing press saying she had married her long-time girlfriend Sean Eav earlier this year in Paris. Hong Kong currently still does not legally recognize same-sex marriages.

Rather than accepting his daughter's decision, Chao has announced a dowry-bounty of sorts: HK$500 million ($65 million US Dollars) to the man who can woo his lesbian daughter away from her wife.

"I don't mind whether he is rich or poor. The important thing is that he is generous and kind-hearted," Chao told the South China Morning Post while dismissing reports of his daughter's same-sex marriage as being "false."

"Gigi is a very good woman with both talents and looks. She is devoted to her parents, is generous and does volunteer work," he said.

His offer has been met with an enthusiastic response around the world. Within a day, Gigi's Facebook and Twitter accounts were inundated with requests and followers.

On her public facebook feed, Gigi wrote: "where do all these people come from? Jerusalm(sic)? Ethiopia? Istanbul? Ridiculous."

Meanwhile on Gawker.com, a shirtless reader - allegedly a Brazilian Algae-researching-mountain-climber - is interested. He wrote the website, asking for help to connect: "I think this girl is gorgeous and as I love women I am willing to fly to hk to meet with her. Can you please let me know how to arrange a meeting with them?"

Speaking to the SCMP Wednesday, Gigi Chao laughed off her father's marriage bounty, telling the newspaper she found it all "quite entertaining."

In the interview the younger Chao would not confirm or deny the rumors of her marriage and her sexual orientation.

"I'm not afraid to admit anything. But I do want to respect my parents," she told the paper.

Much of Hong Kong society maintains fairly conservative views on homosexuality. Gigi Chao acknowledges this telling the paper, "It's still an uncomfortable issue for many people."

When asked by the SCMP whether her father disapproved of her alleged same-sex marriage because his "pronounced heterosexuality," Gigi simply replied: "He loves the attention."

Newly discovered Android security flaw can wipe your phone with the click of a link

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women who underwent genital cutting as young girls may be at increased risk of physical, sexual or emotional abuse from their husband, a study of women in Mali suggests. The study, of nearly 7,900 women, found that 22 percent of those with genital mutilation said they'd been physically abused by a husband or male partner. That compared with 12 percent of women who'd never been subjected to the procedure. It's estimated that more than 130 million women worldwide have undergone genital mutilation, also known as female "circumcision. ...

Novel materials become multifunctional at ultimate quantum limit

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? A University of Arkansas physicist and his colleagues have examined the lower limits of novel materials called complex oxides and discovered that unlike conventional semiconductors the materials not only conduct electricity, but also develop unusual magnetic properties.

Jak Chakhalian, Jian Liu, Derek Meyers and Benjamin Gray of the University of Arkansas and John W. Freeland and Phillip Ryan of the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory present their ideas in Physical Review Letters.

"Contrary to what we have today in modern microelectronics devices based on silicon, here in a single quantum well, which is just four nanometers thick, we now have several functionalities in one device layer," said Chakhalian, professor of physics and holder of the Charles and Clydene Scharlau Chair in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. "Engineers can use this class of material to devise new multifunctional devices based on the electrons' spin."

The microelectronic materials -- semiconductors -- used in today's computers, have almost reached the lower limitation for size and functionality. Computers run on several semiconducting devices layered together in the very smallest of spaces, known as quantum wells, where nanoscale layers of a semiconducting material are sandwiched between two nanoscale layers of a non-conducting material. However, the researchers found that by using complex oxides with correlated electrons confined to quantum well geometry, they added a new dimension to the mix.

The new structure is based on the concept of correlated charge carriers, like those found in rust, or iron oxide. In rust, if one electron does something, all of the other electrons "know" about it. This phenomenon, called correlated electrons, does not exist in silicon-based materials that run today's computers, televisions, complex medical equipment, power cell phones and keep the electricity on in homes.

"In normal materials used today, electrons don't care about the movement of one another," Chakhalian said. "We can predict their properties almost on the 'back of an envelope' with the help of powerful computers." However, with correlated materials, the calculations for the movement of one electron involve tracking the interactions with billions of electrons, and this is beyond modern theory capabilities.

Chakhalian and his colleagues went down to four atomic layers of a correlated complex oxide material based on nickel and sandwiched it in between two layers of non-conducting oxide material based on aluminum. Unlike the semiconducting materials, the complex oxide structure revealed the unexpected presence of both electronic and magnetic properties.

These multiple properties in a single material may allow the semiconductor industry to push the limits of current conventional computers and develop multiple functions for a single device, possibly allowing everyday electronics to become smaller and faster than they are today.

Chakhalian is a professor in the Institute for Nanoscience and Engineering.
