Marsi & Robert's Bright and Tidy Southern Ranch House Tour ...
Name: Marsi and Robert (and dogs Molly & Dodge)
Location: Chattanooga, Tennessee

Years lived in: 5 years; owned
Marsi and Robert were never supposed to call this house home. No, the plan was to buy, renovate, and sell ? but then the housing market tanked, and the couple was faced with making this little "temporary" house their home.
And make it their home, they have! The industrious pair have not only poured hours of hard labor into renovations ? they've also put lots of thought and energy into making this little 1958 ranch sing with personality. Pulling from both of their design interests, they incorporate some mid-century staples with lots of heirlooms and family pieces. Marsi's a whiz at scouring thrift stores and estate sales (just see her etsy shop!) so it's no surprise her source list includes the Salvation Army and the Chattanooga Airport, among lots of other random places!
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Currently we skew midcentury modern with a few traditional and cottage elements thrown in the mix. Our style is constantly evolving, in large part based on the architecture of the home that we are in at a given time (our current home is a 1958 ranch). Somewhere down the road we see ourselves ending up in a little cottage in a southern coastal town, which no doubt will bring about some changes. That being said, we have many pieces that we love, which will always be a key part of our varied designs.
Inspiration: We find inspiration in so many places ? from 1960's design books to the landscapes and cityscapes of the deep South. As much as we appreciate clean-lined modern design, we are also influenced by the eclectic, brilliantly colored, turn-of-the-century homes so often found in southern coastal cities and small towns.
Favorite Element: It's too tough to choose just one. The LCW (first Eames chair in the collection, a gift from Robert's family), the living room tables and stereo cabinet built by Marsi's grandfather and father, Marsi's grandparents' 1960 JBL speakers, and the pillows that Marsi and her Mom made together during their first sewing lesson. Notice the common thread?
Biggest Challenge: This may come as a surprise, but our biggest challenge was finding the right coffee table. We spent years looking for just the right table, but everything was too high, too low, too short, too ugly, too expensive, or just not the right shape for our long narrow living room. Marsi's father Mike offered to build one for us. On his last visit, we jointly designed a coffee table that was just right for the room, and Mike built it. A family collaboration, made even more special because it's built from a family friend's walnut tree that was felled by a storm.
What Friends Say: "You guys always find the coolest stuff!" or "Will you come help me with my house?" (We used to renovate as a profession, and actually have done some work for friends and family.)
Biggest Embarrassment: The light fixtures. We originally purchased the house with the intention of doing a full renovation and then selling the home, so we chose sort of generic light fixtures to appeal to a larger number of potential buyers. When the real estate market crashed, we chose to stay in the house but never changed out the lighting (with the exception of adding the Nelson bubble lamp, which will be go with us to any future homes).
Proudest DIY: We're not very crafty, but are quite handy, so we'd have to answer the house as a whole. We closed off a doorway, enlarged another to expand the view from the front to back of the house, moved kitchen cabinets, installed wainscoting, tiled the kitchen and baths, installed new fixtures, painted every inch of the place, and landscaped.
Biggest Indulgence: Our Eames dining table and chairs. The set was our first major purchase as a couple (before we even lived together), and is still our largest furniture investment to date. We drove to Nashville to buy a George Nelson bench, but instead came home with the table and chairs, which had been part of a modern furniture exhibit at the Frist Museum.
Best Advice: Don't be afraid to design in a way that makes you happy. Your home should be a reflection of yourself, even if it doesn't follow the latest trends. Don't limit yourself within a design bubble.
Dream Sources: Estate sales, small town antique stores, Pre-to-Post Modern (in Nashville), Etsy, Craigslist, thrift stores, used bookstores.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Judith Crist, a blunt and popular film critic for the "Today" show, TV Guide and the New York Herald Tribune whose reviews were at times so harsh that director Otto Preminger labeled her "Judas Crist," has died. She was 90.
Her son, Steven Crist, said his mother died Tuesday at her Manhattan home after a long illness.
Starting in 1963, at the Tribune, Crist wrote about and discussed thousands of movies for millions of readers and viewers, and also covered theater and books.
She was the first woman to become a full-time critic at a major U.S. newspaper and was among the first reviewers of her time to gain a national following. Roger Ebert credited her with helping to make all film critics better known, including such contemporaries as The New Yorker's Pauline Kael and Andrew Sarris of the Village Voice.
With the growing recognition of such foreign directors as Francois Truffaut and Federico Fellini, and the rise of such American filmmakers as Robert Altman and Martin Scorsese, the 1960s and 1970s were an inspiring time for reviewers. Crist duly celebrated many movies, but her trademark quickly became the putdown.
An early review was for "Spencer's Mountain," a sentimental family melodrama starring Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara. Unmoved by a story that became the basis for the TV series "The Waltons," Crist denounced the film's "sheer prurience and perverted morality" and cracked that "it makes the nudie shows at the Rialto look like Walt Disney productions."
The critic really poured it on for "Cleopatra," the budget-busting historical epic that starred Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton and was overwhelmed by the actors' off-screen love affair. "At best a major disappointment, at worst an extravagant exercise in tedium," Crist called the film, dismissing Taylor as "an entirely physical creature, no depth of emotion apparent in her kohl-laden eyes, no modulation in her voice, which too often rises to fishwife levels."
Her conclusion: "The mountain of notoriety has produced a mouse."
Crist was occasionally banned from advance screenings, while studios and theaters would threaten to pull advertising. When her "Cleopatra" review brought her a prize from the New York Newspaper Women's Club, officials at 20th Century Fox, which released the movie, withdrew from the ceremony.
Preminger, whose "Hurry Sundown" she called the "worst film" she had seen in memory, referred to her as "Judas Crist." After she condemned Billy Wilder's cross-dressing classic "Some Like It Hot" for its "perverse" gags and "homosexual 'in' joke(s)," Wilder allegedly remarked that asking her to review your movie was like "asking the Boston strangler to massage your neck."
But Crist had many friends in the business, from Bette Davis to "Cleopatra" director Joseph Mankiewicz. She ran a film festival for decades out of suburban Tarrytown, N.Y., with guests including Robert Redford, Paul Newman and Steven Spielberg. Woody Allen liked her well enough to give her a cameo in his 1980 drama "Stardust Memories," widely believed to have been based in part on Crist's Tarrytown gatherings.
She was born in New York in 1922 and would say that Charlie Chaplin's silent masterpiece "The Gold Rush" was her first and most vivid film memory. By age 10, she had decided she wanted to be a reviewer; movies became her passion and her vice. She would cut classes for a chance to visit a theater or two, including a cherished day in which she took in showings of "Gone With the Wind," ''The Grapes of Wrath" and "Grand Illusion."
Her edge was likely formed by her Dickensian childhood. The daughter of a successful fur trader, she lived in Canada until age 9, attending private school, enjoying the luxuries of multiple homes, live-in servants and the family's bulletproof Cadillac. But in the 1930s, her father's business was ruined by the Great Depression.
"And then suddenly, our most gracious home was gone. The servants left," she wrote years later in Time magazine. "After we lost the last of our homes, we moved to New York to get some kind of assistance from my mother's family. Well, from both of my parents' families. We lived in a small, one-bedroom apartment while my father went out on the road, recouping things."
She still managed to attend Hunter College and receive a master's degree from Columbia University's journalism school. In 1945, soon after graduation, she was hired as a feature writer by the Herald Tribune, where she remained until the paper closed, in 1966, and where colleagues included Jimmy Breslin and Tom Wolfe. In 1950, her education reporting brought her a George Polk Award, and she was honored five times by the New York Newspaper Woman's Club.
Crist reviewed film and theater for the "Today" show from 1964-73, and as a print critic worked for New York magazine, TV Guide and the New York Post. She was a longtime adjunct professor at Columbia and her essays, interviews and reviews have been compiled into three books: "The Private Eye, The Cowboy and the Very Naked Girl," ''Judith Crist's TV Guide to the Movies" and "Take 22: Moviemakers on Moviemaking."
Crist's husband, public relations consultant William B. Crist, died in 1993. Their son, Steven Crist, covered horse racing for The New York Times and later became publisher of the Daily Racing Form.
According to Columbia, a private burial is planned, with a public memorial possible in September.

To participate successfully in life, it is important to be able to read and write. Nevertheless, many children and adults have difficulties in acquiring these skills and the reason is not always obvious. They suffer from dyslexia which can have a variety of symptoms. Thanks to research carried out by Begoa Daz and her colleagues at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, a major step forward has been made in understanding the cause of dyslexia. The scientists have discovered an important neural mechanism underlying dyslexia and shown that many difficulties associated with dyslexia can potentially be traced back to a malfunction of the medial geniculate body in the thalamus. The results provide an important basis for developing potential treatments.
People who suffer from dyslexia have difficulties with identifying speech sounds in spoken language. For example, while most children are able to recognise whether two words rhyme even before they go to school, dyslexic children often cannot do this until late primary school age. Those affected suffer from dyslexia their whole lives. However, there are also always cases where people can compensate for their dyslexia. "This suggests that dyslexia can be treated. We are therefore trying to find the neural causes of this learning disability in order to create a basis for improved treatment options," says Daz. Between five and ten percent of the world's children suffer from dyslexia, yet very little is know about its causes.
Even though those affected do not lack intelligence or schooling, they have difficulties in reading, understanding and explaining individual words or entire texts. The researchers showed that dyslexic adults have a malfunction in a structure that transfers auditory information from the ear to the cortex is a major cause of the impairment: the medial geniculate body in the auditory thalamus does not process speech sounds correctly. "This malfunction at a low level of language processing could percolate through the entire system. This explains why the symptoms of dyslexia are so varied," says Daz.
Under the direction of Katharina von Kriegstein, the researchers conducted two experiments in which several volunteers had to perform various speech comprehension tasks. When affected individuals performed tasks that required the recognition of speech sounds, as compared to recognize the voices that pronounced the same speech, magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) recordings showed abnormal responses in the area around the medial geniculate body. In contrast, no differences were apparent between controls and dyslexic participants if the tasks involved only listening to the speech sounds without having to perform a specific task. "The problem, therefore, has nothing to do with sensory processing itself, but with the processing involved in speech recognition," says Daz. No differences could be ascertained between the two test groups in other areas of the auditory signalling path.
The findings of the Leipzig scientists combine various theoretical approaches, which deal with the cause of dyslexia and, for the first time, bring together several of these theories to form an overall picture. "Recognising the cause of a problem is always the first step on the way to a successful treatment," says Daz. The researchers' next project is now to study whether current treatment programmes can influence the medial geniculate body in order to make learning to read easier for everyone in the long term.
