Buttermilk Dill Pasta Salad - Eat. Drink. Love.

Oh, hi Summer! It?s nice to see you. Kind of. I have to admit that I REALLY hate Florida summers. The humidity just totally disgusts me! You can break a sweat just walking to the mailbox. And don?t even get me started on my hair. Thick and wavy hair does not work well in humidity. I don?t even know why I bother straightening my hair.

One thing I do enjoy about summer is food. Duh. Summertime makes me think of great picnic and BBQ foods. Pasta and potato salads are a summer favorite. I have some serious standards when it comes to pasta salads. If there is a ton of mayo, you can forget it! I also like my pasta salads to filled with other great ingredients like lots of fresh veggies for added texture and flavor.

THIS pasta salad! This pasta salad is an exception to my pasta salad rule. There isn?t a ton of mayo. The buttermilk gives it a nice tang and the dill just adds even more great flavor! The other thing I love about this pasta salad is how versatile it is. I added peas, corn, and bacon to mine as that is what I had on hand at home, but you could really add so many different things to this pasta salad! Maybe some cherry tomatoes, broccoli, or carrots. I think some chicken or shrimp would also be nice!

Buttermilk Dill Pasta Salad

Ingredients

• 8 ounces whole grain shell pasta (or pasta of your choice)
• 1/3 cup reduced fat mayonnaise (I used the kind made with olive oil)
• 1/4 cup low fat or fat free buttermilk
• 1 cup frozen green peas
• 1 cup frozen corn
• 4-5 slices reduced fat bacon, cooked and diced into small pieces
• 1 tbs. fresh dill, chopped
• 2 garlic cloves, minced
• 1 1/2 tbs. lemon juice
• salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Cook pasta according to package instructions.
2. In a small saucepan, combine the frozen corn and peas with about a half a cup of water. Heat on medium heat and cook until the vegetables are warm and tender. Drain and set aside.
3. In a small bowl, whisk together the mayo, buttermilk, dill, garlic, lemon juice, and salt and pepper to taste.
4. In a serving bowl, combine the cooked pasta, corn and peas, and bacon. Add the buttermilk sauce and toss to combine. Serve or store in the fridge.

Study traces origins of monogamous coupling

The roots of the modern family ? monogamous coupling ? lie somewhere in our distant evolutionary past, but scientists disagree on how it first evolved.

A new study says we should thank two key players: weak males with inferior fighting chops and the females who opted to be faithful to them.

These mating strategies may "have triggered a key step in the very long process of the evolution of the family," said study author Sergey Gavrilets, a biomathematician at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. "Without it, we wouldn't have the modern family."

The mating structure of humans is strikingly different than that of sexually promiscuous chimps, in which a few alpha males dominate other males in the group and, by dint of their superior fighting prowess, freely mate with the females. Lower-status males are largely shut out from mating opportunities.

In addition, male chimps don't contribute to rearing their young ? that is left to the female.

Some scientists believe that ancestors of humans had chimp-like patterns of mating and child-rearing. The transition to pair-bonding was a key step for our big-brained species, because our children take years and much energy to raise to independence. It's hard for a mother to go it alone.

How did the transition take place? It's not a simple question, Gavrilets said.

Dominant, promiscuous males have it good ? they don't have to invest in their young because they'll have plenty of offspring regardless, Gavrilets said.

Males that help feed and protect a smaller number of offspring can also be very successful, reproductively speaking ? but only if they can be sure who their children really are or if they provide for all the young in a group. Otherwise, the "providers" will be wasting their resources on offspring that are not their own, and there is ample opportunity for some males to cheat and not do their part.

Gavrilets wanted to see how we might have gotten from A to B. In his work published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, he used mathematical models to test factors that scientists believe may have driven the transition to pair-bonding. These include mate-guarding (males hang around the females they've mated with so others cannot mate with them too) and provisioning (males offer food or other resources to a female in return for sexual favors).

His number-crunching found that these factors alone were not enough to move a species away from promiscuity. The models did work, though, with a few adjustments.

First, he stopped assuming that all males would act the same. Instead, he tested what would happen if only the low-ranking males in the group offered food to females in return for mating opportunities. These weaker males had less to lose by switching strategies because they wouldn't get very far through fighting anyway.

The other key change was realizing that these low-ranking males would select faithful females.

"When I factored those things in, then things start to happen with the formation of pair bonds," Gavrilets said. Pair-bonding ultimately swept through almost the entire group.

For all the talk of the free-love 1960s, he added, "people don't realize that the most important sexual revolution for our species happened much, much earlier ? probably several million years earlier."

Owen Lovejoy, a biological anthropologist at Kent State University in Ohio, said the paper fits with his own thoughts on the evolution of monogamy.

Lovejoy, who edited Gavrilets' paper, said he had theorized for decades that monogamy could be traced to males providing food to females. In a 2009 research paper, he proposed that monogamy was already in place in a 4.4-million-year-old member of the human family, Ardipithecus ramidus, based on such features as a lack of large, slicing canine teeth that would signify a lot of male competition as well as an upright skeleton that would leave arms free to carry food.

But David Buss, an evolutionary psychologist at the University of Texas at Austin and author of "The Evolution of Desire: Strategies of Human Mating," said that although the paper offered a "plausible" explanation for what may have jump-started monogamy, it hugely simplified human sexual behavior.

Human mating behaviors, for men and women, are quite varied, he said ? including not just committed, long-term pairing but a smorgasbord of other strategies such as casual sex, serial monogamy, having a long-term mate with sexual partners on the side, and combinations thereof.

The study also fails to address the possibility that males didn't move straight from promiscuity to monogamy but instead to an intermediate pattern of polygyny ? guarding a number of females on a long-term basis, said primatologist Bernard Chapais of the University of Montreal.

Once polygyny was in place, it would have been much easier to move to monogamy without Gavrilets' assumptions about providing food and care, Chapais said.

Chicken Noodle Soup

Not feeling up to cafeteria food, I decided to go and enjoy a bowl of hot soup at Tim Hortons on this slightly chilly day. The Tim Hortons at Richmond Centre was super busy even at 2pm and most people seemed to be getting a late lunch. Despite all the customers and long lines, at least I know the food will be fresh. I was tempted to get a soup, donut, and drink combo as the new S?mores Donut looked very tempting but I was not in the mood for a hot drink. Perhaps next time, I will just get the donut.

The Chicken Noodle Soup came with a fresh oven-baked roll. I love how they have ceramic bowls and even the silverware made it seem like it was not fast food. The soup was warm and I was actually quite pleased with it. Not necessarily low in sodium, it was at least low in fat. The soup was not too oily either, which made it easy to drink. The chicken broth was nice although I did not get much chicken, only a few very tiny pieces. I did, however, get a lot of round carrot slices much to my delight. I did not expect the pasta to be al dente ? it is a soup after all ? and it was not. I was glad, though, that each rounded piece of bow tie pasta was still intact. The red pepper and onion bits was not very obvious in the taste. The soup roll was also nice even though it was not warm. The crust was slightly hardened and chewy and the inside was extremely soft. Overall, I though the meal was quite delicious for a fast food standard. It makes for an affordable, quick lunch on a chilly day so I will definitely go back since cafeteria food is extremely boring and expensive.?

Classic Cars Collection: Insurance rates with respect to car types

A large number of drivers usually get surprised when they learn about different insurance rates for different car types. They think that it doesn't matter whether it's a small car or a hot rod as long as they have a good driving record and don't get in trouble in traffic. Mid-sized cars
Mid-class vehicles are often considered to be the safest and the cheapest to insure. Naturally, it depends on the particular make and model, but the in general these cars are quite safe, have low repair costs and theft rates, and tend to get damaged much less than smaller vehicles during an accident. That is why you will usually get the best auto insurance rates for this car type.

SUVs
Large cars, trucks and SUVs that fall into the same size category are certainly very comfortable and give you a whole different perspective in traffic. But the size can be a problem with these vehicles. Due to their increased mass as compared to other vehicle types SUVs tend to produce more damage during accidents, especially involving other cars. Third party liability claims with SUVs are likely to be higher because the other car tends to get damaged quite bad and there are likely to be injuries as well. Added to the higher repair costs for such vehicles SUVs are usually more expensive to insure.

Sports vehicles
Fast sports cars often look like a great option for car buyers since they are both cool and cheap. However, when it comes to insuring a typical sports car, you will actually have a hard time getting cheap auto insurance because insurers tend to classify such cars as high risk. High top speed, engine volume, elevated theft and accident rates as well as the likelihood to produce a very serious car crash all contribute to expensive auto insurance rates for sports vehicles.

Expensive cars
It may look natural for expensive cars to be costly in terms of insurance. But it has nothing to do with their initial price as there are other reasons to charge higher rates for such vehicles. First of all, they are usually very costly to repair, often requiring exclusive and overpriced repair parts that are hard to find in an ordinary repair shop. Besides, such vehicles are often targeted by car thieves and burglars due to their value and exclusivity. That's why getting cheap auto insurance for any luxury car is problematic.

China will invest over CNY370 billion ($58.5 billion) in its telecommunication sector this year, up over 10% from last year, state radio reported Friday, citing an official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

"This year will see a fresh round of investment in our country's telecommunications infrastructure," Vice Minister Shang Bing was cited as saying.

Beijing is seeking to boost its slowing economic growth by expanding investment in projects such as infrastructure construction.

China's State Council, or cabinet, on Wednesday revealed fresh plans to spur economic growth, including faster construction of existing large infrastructure projects.

BREAKING: Army opens formal investigation into university student's alleged suicide

About three weeks after the death of a university student, army officials have opened a formal investigation into her mother's allegations that she was a victim of marriage fraud.

Katherine Morris, a senior family sciences major, was found dead in her car near Arundel Mills Mall May 6 in what police reported as a suicide. Col. Mark Murray at Fort Bragg, N.C. opened a commander?s inquiry Tuesday to investigate the nature of allegations against Morris?s husband, Spc. Isaac Goodwin, that he scammed her into a false marriage to obtain military benefits. Goodwin could not be reached for comment.

"She was a loving, trusting person," her mother, Marguerite Morris, said. ?The emotional abuse that she endured robbed her of so much of life ... she discovered it was just a sham to get money.?

Capt. Christopher Foreman, deputy public affairs officer for the 82nd Airborne Division, said Murray assigned an officer to the case after Marguerite Morris spoke with several military officials. The inquiry is a higher level than an internal investigation by a commanding officer, he said, and can last weeks or months.

?The investigation and allegations are being taken seriously by the military and the 82nd. Obviously our condolences go out to the family and this soldier," Foreman said, adding, "There?s a lot of unanswered questions.?

Foreman said he did not have specific information about the case but confirmed that if Goodwin brought his marriage license to Fort Bragg, he could have filed paperwork to receive additional pay meant for his spouse and the right to live off-base.

According to a WRAL.com report from Fort Bragg, Goodwin was stationed in Afghanistan but was granted emergency leave after Morris?s death.

Last August, Katherine Morris married Goodwin in a courthouse in Fairfax, Va., according to her mother. Sam Cojolo, Katherine?s friend, said Morris did not tell him about the marriage until he heard about it second-hand and confronted her in church later that week.

?I think she just wanted to wait to tell everybody that she was married,? said Cojolo, who said he previously dated Morris. ?I?m not even sure if she told anybody else afterwards.?

Marguerite Morris met Goodwin once in August but did not know about her daughter?s marriage until late December. When she didn?t hear from her daughter for several days, Marguerite Morris sent her an email demanding a response, she said.

When Katherine answered her mother around Dec. 22, she also admitted that she was thinking about suicide, Marguerite Morris said.

?That scared me to death but showed me her mental state. It was one of the worst days of my life,? Marguerite Morris said. ?I couldn?t drive there, I was an hour and a half away, so I dialed 911.?

At the hospital later that day, Katherine Morris told her mother she was married to Goodwin, who she said arrived through the Red Cross a few days later.

But Morris said her daughter seemed to be ?coming out of it? and had been planning for the future by gathering letters of recommendation for her application to the Air Force Officer Training School.

?There were so many tomorrows but yet there was this other piece that was so painful, I can't describe to you the pain she was feeling,? Marguerite Morris said.
