Ford to close Belgian plant in 2014, say unions

Workers at a Ford assembly plant react after an emergency meeting with the plant management in Genk October 24, 2012. ? Reuters pic

GENK (Belgium), Oct 24 ? Ford Motor Co will close a factory employing 4,300 workers in the Belgian town of Genk in 2014, trade union leaders at the site said today, as the US automaker tries to stem losses in Europe and match capacity to tumbling demand.

Consumers are grappling with tight budgets, unemployment and government austerity, creating economic gloom that has sparked a slump in the region?s auto market; too much production capacity has weighed on the profitability of carmakers in Europe.

?The management has decided to close the car assembly and the press activities in Genk at the end of the current production cycle in 2014,? Luc Prenen, leader of the ACV union, told workers gathered outside the plant.

?This will result in the closing of the Genk production site and will cause the loss of 4,300 jobs,? he added, using megaphone to make himself heard to the crowd.

The plant makes the Mondeo mid-size car and Galaxy and S-MAX minivans, but all three models are nearing the end of their current life cycles. Production of the new Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy models will be moved to Valencia in Spain, Prenen said.

Several hundred Ford workers had gathered outside the gates of the plant, in Genk, in eastern Belgium, as local Ford managers met staff representatives today.

?It?s incredible,? said one of the workers, Peter Aerts. ?Just last month I got an invitation to celebrate 25 years working here.?

Rough scenes

Another employee at the plant, Rudi Schepens, said: ?It?s difficult because most people here are over 40. They say that people will find it hard because the government has to make cuts. That?s nothing compared to what we are facing.

?First they gave us hope, now it?s all gone.?

Union leader Prenen said European-level managers from Ford did not attend the meeting, at which local managers simply read out a statement.

?After the announcement there were some rough scenes. There was some pushing and shoving but we managed to calm it down,? he said. ?It was aimed at the management but they left quickly. It was also among each other as people were very angry and frustrated.?

Ford Europe managers, including Chief Executive Stephen Odell, are scheduled to meet Belgian Prime Minister Elio di Rupo and Employment Minister Monica De Coninck at 1pm (1900 Malaysian time), a government spokesman said.

The executives are also due to meet members of the government of the Dutch-speaking region of Flanders, where the plant is located, at noon (1800 Malaysian time).

In September, European new car registrations shrank at the fastest pace in the past 12 months, leaving nearly all major brands nursing double-digit declines.

French carmaker PSA Peugeot Citroen, which in July announced plans to cut 8,000 more jobs and close a plant near Paris, said today third-quarter sales fell 3.9 per cent.

Ford?s Genk plant, which opened in 1964, has operated on a four-day week for much of 2012, unions say, with only 15 more production days planned this year, none of them in December.

Ford?s announcement last month that it would produce the new Mondeo in Genk from next year briefly raised hopes for the plant?s future, although sources later warned that the tentative start date was not a reprieve and Ford was prepared to assemble the model elsewhere.

Workers began blocking the gates when reports of the possible closure emerged on Monday.

Ford, which will present third-quarter results on October 30, doubled its European loss forecast for 2012 to US$1 billion (RM3 billion) in July and said action was needed to ?decrease our production to match real demand?.

Ford employs 3,485 workers at its assembly plant in Valencia, where it produces the C-MAX Grand and Compact models, data on its website shows. It also has an engine plant in Valencia employing 470.

News of Genk?s closure follows General Motors? move to close its Antwerp site in Belgium. Its European unit Opel is also in talks with unions on a restructuring plan leading to the eventual closure of its factory at Bochum in Germany. ? Reuters

Outsports: A gay former Minor League pitcher talks about life in pro baseball?s closet

?I felt like it was time and I wasn?t afraid of the unknown any more. I felt like people needed to know,? Dillinger, 39, said about his decision to come out. He contacted Outsports after reading about the public coming out of Kevin McClatchy, former owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and was happy to share his story.

Ironically, Dillinger ? from Connellsville, Pa., just southeast of Pittsburgh ? was playing for the Pirates? Minor League system when McClatchy bought the team in 1996. He knew a woman who was dating McClatchy at the time and she suspected the owner might be gay; hearing it confirmed this September ?inspired and thrilled? Dillinger.

?What some people do not understand is that it takes considerable courage to reveal your true self and to not worry about what others may think of you, especially in professional sports,? Dillinger said. ?Whether it?s as a player or executive, the unknown is what really keeps some of us in the closet. I?m very proud of Kevin and I wish he and his partner the best for years to come.?

...He also offers advice to any player considering coming out:

?My advice to a player who would decide to come out is to talk to one of your closest teammates first. If they are understanding and accepting like they should be, continue further and let the whole team know.

?I 100% believe that most of your teammates will respect you even more if you are honest with them. Baseball as well as all major sports have come a long way as far as not tolerating bigoted behavior and homophobic slurs. There have been quite a few examples recently. Successful athletes have one thing in common which helps make them successful: NO FEAR. This should be no different.?

Thanks to Steve.

Colombia?s president awarded Shalom Prize

BUENOS?AIRES, Argentina (JTA) -- Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos was awarded the Shalom Prize for his commitment to seeking peace in his country and worldwide.

The prize, bestowed Tuesday at a ceremony in Bogota, is awarded by the Latin American chapter of the World Jewish Congress based in Buenos Aires.

?Both the people here and the people in Israel have been seeking peace for decades,? Santos said upon receiving the award.

Prior to the ceremony, WJC President Ronald Lauder and Latin American Jewish Congress President Jack Terpins held a private meeting with Santos, who praised the Jewish community for supporting him in the controversial decision to engage in the current talks with the rebel group FARC.

Santos added that Colombia supports a negotiated settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and a two-state solution. However, a peace deal had to include the recognition of Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people, he said, according to those present at the meeting.

The award was established to recognize individuals or organizations who seek peace. In 2008, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet received the award in recognition of his government's efforts to build an inclusive society with full respect for minorities.

BMW Intelligent Driving: cars and motorcycles talking to each other ...

Show Your Love By Sharing

BMW Group is finding new ways to make their range of vehicles more efficient, safe and intelligent. BMW Group has now announced that they started extensive testing of their vehicles which will feature Car-to-X technologies. These will offer all the assistance possible to drivers. Car-to-X (C2X) is to showcase how the concept of networked cars can be adapted to increase road safety and enhance efficiency of its engine. The trials will be undertaken with 120 vehicles (25 BMW vechicles) that will be tested at the Rhine-Main region while field operation tests are being carried out at Hessen.

Intelligent driving predicts what is up ahead and intimates driver well in advance and in this way offers better safety and saving of energy. However these sensors have a limited anticipation horizon and are mainly confined to vehicles in the immediate vicinity. With C2X communications this limit is extended and hence allows drivers to look far ahead and even see things that are hidden from view or round corners.

All 120 cars on test will be linked to the network and will keep each other updated on exact traffic conditions, jams, approaching vehicles, etc all in good time thereby enabling the driver to take necessary and timely action.?BMW ConnectedRide offers protection for motorcyclists. ConnectedRide is the same as ConnectedDrive but for two wheelers to ensure rider's safety in various road conditions. Slippery roads, heavy rainfall, fog, etc pose a problem for motorbike riders. Through ConnectedRide, riders are given advance notification so that immediate and correct action can be taken.

Auto News Release

The BMW Group gets cars and motorcycles talking to each other in the simTD research project. One of the world's most extensive field operational tests of Car-to-X communication has got under way in Hessen.

Frankfurt am Main. Intelligent driving that saves energy and increases safety always means anticipating what's ahead, too. An array of sensors is today already at work in vehicles to help drivers do just that. The anticipation "horizon" of these sensors is often limited, however, and confined to the vehicle's immediate surroundings. "Car-to-X communication greatly extends the anticipation horizon and will in future allow drivers to look far into the distance, see things that are hidden, and even peer round several corners," explains Karl-Ernst Steinberg, Manager Projects IT Drive at BMW Group Research and Technology.

Car-to-X communication means networking vehicles and infrastructure with one another electronically, enabling a direct exchange of information between both the vehicles themselves and between vehicles and the traffic infrastructure, such as traffic light systems. This makes Car-to-X a comprehensive messaging network that every road user can be involved in. As the potential of Car-to-X communication can only be fully exploited through mass use, it makes sense to research this technology in alliance with other partners. That's why numerous companies from the automotive and telecommunications industries, the federal state government of Hessen, the city of Frankfurt am Main and a number of prominent universities and research institutes have joined forces to work on the research project simTD (a German abbreviation standing for Safe Intelligent Mobility ? Testing Ground Germany). Their common objective is to test out the functionality, everyday practicality and effectiveness of Car-to-X communication under realistic conditions for the first time.

Car-to-X communication. The networking technology of the future.

Car-to-X communication essentially takes place via wireless LAN and mobile network connections. It is based on high-speed WLAN, which is derived from the high-frequency WLAN standard IEEE 802.11p or ITS G5A and allows real-time communication. The protocol is structured in such a way that many different subscribers can communicate with one another in parallel with zero interference. At the same time, mobile communications networks are becoming more and more powerful too, with higher bandwidths and ever shorter delays in data transmission, or latency as it is known. As a result, they are playing an increasingly important role for Car-to-X communication, for instance as a way of supplementing the WLAN communication.

20 BMW cars and five BMW motorcycles are taking part.
Following four years of research work, the field operational test has now started, one of the biggest of its kind in the world. Using a fleet of 120 test vehicles, the technology will now be put to the test for the first time in real traffic conditions on autobahns and major highways as well as urban routes in and around Frankfurt am Main. The BMW Group is the only project partner to have both cars and motorcycles taking part in the field trial.

BMW ConnectedRide. Active protection for motorcyclists too.

The BMW Group always gives consideration to all road user groups in its efforts to keep raising road safety standards. Besides applications for BMW Group cars and for protecting pedestrians and cyclists, integrating motorcycles into the system of reciprocal networking, too, is an especially important aspect of Car-to-X communication. BMW Motorrad ConnectedRide is the two-wheeled equivalent of BMW ConnectedDrive and focuses on enhancing safety for motorcyclists. One of the project's key elements centres on the development of rider assistance systems on the basis of Car-to-X communication. Motorcyclists have to contend with other dangers out on the road than motorists. Certain situations, such as fog, slippery roads or heavy rainfall, pose far more of a challenge for motorcyclists. Also other drivers unfortunately often fail to see motorcycles due to their slim outline. So, it can be of great benefit to motorcyclists if they receive advance notification of specific situations. It is often the cars which play a crucial role here, by acting as the warning triggers, as it were: switching on the foglamps, activating the fastest windscreen wiper setting or intervention by the car's DSC system during normal driving can all point to adverse conditions at a particular spot. This information is relayed to the motorcycle to keep its rider fully informed of what's ahead.

The BMW Group assistance systems in the simTD research project.

Various driver and rider assistance systems based on Car-to-X communication are being tested out for BMW Group cars and motorcycles as part of the simTD research project. By getting traffic light systems to transmit information on their phase times, for instance, a driver assistance system can either indicate the ideal speed for catching all the lights on green or warn drivers before they drive through on red (Traffic Light Phase Assistant). By transferring specific data about traffic levels, the state of the road surfaces, as well as other factors, it is possible for a vehicle to issue advance warnings of accidents (obstruction warning), traffic tailbacks (end of tailback warning) or black ice (road weather warning) to other road users in the vicinity. It is furthermore possible to calculate the risk of a collision on the basis of the transmitted vehicle data, meaning that drivers can be alerted to possible crashes at road junctions, for example (Intersection Assistant). Further Car-to-X functions featuring in the simTD research project include an emergency vehicle warning, electronic brake light, as well as the Traffic Sign Assistant.

Traffic management as a vital element.

Besides the development of vehicle-specific applications, the government-backed simTD project also seeks to improve traffic management. To this end, the city of Frankfurt am Main and the German state of Hessen are working on intelligent systems for optimising traffic flows on our roads. The necessary data is provided by the simTD test vehicles and can be used, for example, to cut congestion, lower CO2 emissions and reduce waiting times at traffic lights.

The simTD research project.

The German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development are providing funding for simTD, as this alliance has the ability to take anticipatory driving, traffic control and accident prevention into a new dimension. Establishing a uniform standard is vital for the successful commercialisation of Car-to-X communication. simTD is a joint project between leading German carmakers, car suppliers, telecommunications companies and research institutes, as well as the public sector. The project partners are: Adam Opel AG, AUDI AG, BMW AG, BMW Forschung und Technik GmbH, Daimler AG, Ford Research Centre Aachen, Volkswagen AG, Robert Bosch GmbH, Continental, Deutsche Telekom AG, Fraunhofer Society for the Advancement of Applied Research, German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), Technical University of Berlin, Technical University of Munich, Saarland University of Applied Sciences, University of W?rzburg, Hessen Mobile ? Road & Traffic Management, city of Frankfurt am Main. The project is supported by the state of Hesse, the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) and the Car 2 Car Communication Consortium. The Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development are providing around ?40 million of funding for simTD, with a further ?31 million coming from the project partners.

Tazi's Rules For Successful Writing (As Taught By URI!) - Ask Tazi!

Dear Tazi:

I am married to a very successful local author, who has been blessed with enough success that he has been able to quit his day job and work from home as a full-time writer.? Although I am extremely happy for my husband, I am also very jealous.? I, too, am a writer, but not a successful author.? Everything I have ever written, from short stories to a full-length novel, has been met with multiple rejection slips.? Still, I keep plugging on, hoping one day to publish the Great American Novel.? In the meantime, I write copy for a local newspaper.? Our bills are paid and we have money in the bank, but my lack of professional fulfillment is starting to affect our marriage.?

Tazi, I have visited your ghostwriter?s website (I presume she is your Mommie) and was very impressed with the work she has posted there.? Obviously, it is mostly academic, she being a student and all, but it is well researched stuff and very interesting to read ? and I don?t even like non-fiction!? Could you tell me her secret to keeping readers interested in what she writes?? It seems to me like my family and friends enjoy what I write at the start, and then lose interest halfway through the piece.? When I ask them what was wrong, they just tell me that they could not follow the story or that my characters lacked depth.?

I wish I had the time to take classes in Creative Writing, but between work and home I do not have the time to commute to the nearest college campus, an hour away from where I live and work.? I suppose it would be an investment in my marriage, but I am afraid the time commitment would leave less and less time available for me to spend with my husband?which right now may be a good thing.? What do you advise, kitty?

Signed,

Struggling

Dear Struggling:

I ran your letter by my Mommie, and she thanks you for your praise!? Like all writers, Mommie loves praise.? (I should give her some praise, too!? Praise!? Praise for Mommie!).? The reason why a lot of what Mommie writes is so interesting is because I dictate to her what to say.? That?s right; the secret to my Mommie?s success is that I, Tazi-Kat, let her know when her work is something that should line my litter-box!

Seriously, my input is only a part of Mommie?s academic success as a writer.? In speaking with her about what makes somebody?s writing interesting, we talked of many things (of ships, shoes, sealing wax; of cabbages and kings) and several points that she has learned in school stood out, including:

Rule #1: Write what you know; but know your audience, as well.? Although this sounds simple enough, the truth of the matter is that many writers choose to write about what they find interesting, even though it may not be of interest to their target audience.? Balance is the key to finding joy in success and success through your joy.

Rule #2: Assume that your audience knows nothing about your subject.? Because writers usually write about what interests them ? their passion, if you will ? a novice mistake is to leave out vital information, assuming it is common knowledge.? By building your audience?s knowledge you can also build their curiosity ? and their continued interest in your work.

Rule #3: Write your thoughts, your every thought, and leave the editing for later.? This is what is called "pre-writing" or a ?zero draft?.? By spewing everything onto the written page you will be able to clear your head of all the great ideas you are certain will work for whatever it is you are writing and think clearly about the direction in which you want to head.

Rule #4: Let your work mentally marinate and return to it a few days later.? By letting it sit and coming back to edit it a few days later, you will be able to pick through the truly great ideas and leave the so-so stuff behind.?

Rule #5: Make an outline draft of what you plan on writing.? As your story develops, return to the outline and look for places where more detail is needed and decide what will be plugged in where.

Rule #6: Put yourself in your readers? shoes.? Look at your drafted work with a critical eye and examine it for shortcomings.? Is your plot developed enough?? Does the story flow from one moment to the next with proper use of segue?? Are the characters both interesting and realistic??

Rule #7: Never submit a first draft for publication; you are only setting yourself up for failure. Once completed, leave each draft for a few days (see Rule #4) and return to it with fresh eyes for a critical review.? You will be surprised at how many edits you will want to make!

Rule #8: Ask for trusted outside opinions on your completed draft.? Give a copy to someone you know is not afraid to offer you constructive criticism on your writing, and what can be done to make it more interesting for the reader.

Rule #9: Be open to heavy edits to your draft.? I understand that your writing is your baby ? you created it, you put your heart and soul into it ? and edits can sometimes feel like an amputation, but this is the step that separates the successful writers from the hopefuls.?

Rule #10: Take a class ? or several classes ? in writing and its many genres.? Not only will you be learning from experts in the field, you will also be granted the opportunity to work with other aspiring writers while developing your own professional processes for success.?

Snuggles,

Tazi

P.S.? Big thank yous to Mommie?s Writing Professors at the University of Rhode Island for teaching her all of these important lessons!

Ask Tazi! is ghostwritten by a human with a Bachelors of Arts in Communications. Tazi-Kat is not really a talking feline.

Spirited Biden Debate Performance Allows Democrats to Exhale

Democrats, you may exhale. But don't you dare rejoice.

Vice President Joe Biden took some of the heat off his boss in the critical home stretch of the 2012 election, delivering a spirited debate performance that aimed to compensate for President Obama?s lifeless appearance on another stage one week ago.

While Biden frequently got the better of his younger rival, Paul Ryan made a strong pitch for the business expertise Romney would bring to the White House at a time of economic peril. The likely result: a race that is as tight and unpredictable as ever.

Few voters will have Ryan or Biden in mind when they cast their ballots, but their first and only matchup in Danville, Ky., was an opportunity for them to alter perceptions of the men leading the tickets. Biden built a populist case against the Republican Party?s plan to extend tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, arguing that those breaks are holding the middle class ?hostage.??Ryan shot back that there weren?t enough rich people in the country to pay for the Democrats? overspending.

National polls and surveys in several battleground states have been tightening since Romney?s strong debate appearance last week. The race looks like a tie, with the president holding a slight edge. Romney?s image has been improving the most with blue-collar women ? a group Biden tried to reach by criticizing the Republican Party?s tax plan and defending abortion rights.

Both he and Ryan made a point several times of looking away from the moderator, Martha Raddatz of ABC News, and directly facing the television camera in an attention-grabbing effort to connect with the small sliver of the electorate that is still on the fence.

Both vice presidential candidates were far less appealing while listening to each other.

Ryan, who looks younger than his 42 years, wore an unbecoming smirk through much of the debate. And the 69-year-old Biden?s constant grinning and chuckling to express disbelief at his opponent?s assertions was unsettling, especially when it came in response to grim topics such as the violence in the Middle East and the war in Afghanistan. Was he overcompensating for Obama?s dour demeanor in the first presidential debate last week? Or just being Joe?

Indignation suited Biden much better than bemusement.

The vice president, who relishes talking about his hardscrabble childhood in Scranton, Pa., did a star turn as Obama?s ambassador to working-class America. He twice called Ryan?s criticisms ?malarkey.? And referring to Romney?s remarks at a closed-door fundraiser that described 47 percent of the country as government freeloaders, Biden said, ?These people are my mom and dad, the people I grew up with, my neighbors.... They are elderly people who, in fact, are living off Social Security. They are veterans and people fighting in Afghanistan right now who are, quote, not paying any taxes.?

He added: ?Instead of signing pledges to [antitax crusader] Grover Norquist not to ask the wealthiest among us to contribute to bring back the middle class, they should be signing a pledge saying to the middle class, we're going to level the playing field.?

The sound heard next was from Democrats doing the living room cheers they never got to do during the presidential debate last week.

Biden was on shakier ground when asked to explain the deaths of four Americans at the Libyan embassy last month and the initial failure of the administration to characterize the attacks as terrorism.

Ryan saw his opening. ?Look, if we?re hit by terrorists, we?re going to call it for what it is, a terrorist attack,? he said. In a more sweeping criticism of the administration, Ryan added, ?What we are witnessing as we turn on our television screens these days is the absolute unraveling of the Obama foreign policy.... Problems are growing abroad, but jobs aren't growing here at home.?

It was a lively, 90-minute exchange between two career politicians who clearly relish a good debate, but the elder statesman frequently prevailed. When Ryan argued that the administration was downplaying the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran, Biden retorted that Iran faced ?crippling sanctions? and suggested a Romney administration would be panting to go to war. When Ryan spoke movingly about Romney?s generosity to his fellow churchgoers, Biden said he didn?t doubt his personal commitments, but what about his commitment to the struggling automobile industry?

?Stop talking about how you care about people,? Biden barked. ?Show me something. Show me a policy.?

Indeed, Ryan struggled to give details about how a Romney administration would pay for its tax cuts without boosting the deficit. He was caught flat-footed when Biden reminded the Wisconsin congressman that he had submitted two requests for money from the administration?s economic stimulus package he has often derided.

Ryan also gave a muddled explanation of the ticket?s view toward winding down the war in Afghanistan. ?We don?t want to lose the gains we?ve gotten,? he said, while acknowledging that he and Romney agree with the administration that troops should be home by 2014.

Then Biden schooled his younger opponent about the reason for the timeline: so that Afghanistan would take responsibility for its own security. ?The only way they step up is to say, ?Fellas, we?re leaving,? he said.

Ryan was more confident when he accused the administration of siphoning $716 billion from Medicare to pay for its health care law and failing to put forth a long-term plan to reform entitlement programs. The chairman of the House Budget Committee is revered by the conservative establishment and demonized by Democrats for his plan to overhaul the government?s safety nets for the poor and elderly.

Look for that debate over the size and scope of government to dominate the race in its final weeks.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Alex Rodriguez will start the New York Yankees' biggest game of the year on the bench.

After being pinch hit for in Games 3 and 4 against the Baltimore Orioles, the $275 million third baseman was removed from the starting lineup for Game 5 on Friday.

"I'm not happy and obviously disappointed," Rodriguez said. "Want to be in there in the worst way."

Eric Chavez was set to start at third base, while Game 3 star Raul Ibanez will be the designated hitter in the winner-take-all series finale.

"It is difficult. He has meant a lot to the organization, the game of baseball over the years," manager Joe Girardi said. "And he has been a very productive hitter. But he struggled against right-handers in the series, and Chavy has been good against right-handers all year long."

The 37-year-old Rodriguez is 2 for 16 (.125) with no RBIs in the series, going hitless in 12 at-bats against right-handed pitchers with nine strikeouts. He was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts in the opener against Jason Hammel, Baltimore's Game 5 starter.

Chavez hit .298 against righties during the regular season but is 0 for 4 against them in the playoffs.

Girardi contacted Rodriguez at about 1 p.m., before the 14-time All-Star arrived at Yankee Stadium, and informed him of the decision. Rodriguez took batting practice with the regular starters, not the reserves.

"It's never about Joe," Rodriguez said. "I always have to look in the mirror and do what I can do to do the best I can."

Since helping New York win the 2009 World Series, Rodriguez is 10 for 66 (.152) with no homers and six RBIs in postseason play. He hasn't homered in 84 at-bats since Sept. 14.

With the Yankees trailing 2-1 in the ninth inning of Game 3, Girardi sent up Ibanez to bat for A-Rod, and Ibanez hit a tying home run. Ibanez homered again in the 12th to give New York a 3-2 win.

Baltimore led 2-1 in the 13th inning in Game 4 when Chavez batted for Rodriguez and lined to third for the final out.

Is getting benched worse than getting pinch hit for?

"I'm not going to get into that," Rodriguez said. "I'm part of this team, and I'm ready to roll, and I'll be ready."

With the Yankees owing Rodriguez $114 million over the next five seasons, managing his decline could become a central issue for the team.

"I ain't worried about years ahead. Just let me worry about today," Girardi said. "The best relationships, the strongest relationships, are always relationships that go through some struggles. Relationships just aren't perfect. I mean, you put a husband and wife together where the relationship was just perfect without any struggles, and you're probably not living on this planet. So relationships go through that.

"So, I mean if things have to be, you know, built back up, we can do that. I have had to do that before. So I don't worry about that."

Fifth on the career list with 647 home runs ? 115 behind Barry Bonds' record ? Rodriguez has been slowed by five trips to the disabled list in five seasons: for a strained quadriceps (2008), hip surgery (2009), a strained calf (2010), knee surgery (2011) and a broken hand, sustained July 24 when hit by a pitch from Seattle's Felix Hernandez.

Before the start of spring training in 2009, he admitting using performance-enhancing drugs while he was with the Texas Rangers from 2001-03.

As for the rest of the Yankees' lineup, Derek Jeter was back at shortstop after being moved to DH for a game because of a sore left foot. Jeter led off, followed by left fielder Ichiro Suzuki, second baseman Robinson Cano, first baseman Mark Teixeira, Ibanez, right fielder Nick Swisher, center fielder Curtis Granderson, catcher Russell Martin and Chavez.

Yankees ace CC Sabathia was on the mound. He led the Yankees to a 7-2 win in the opener.

Girardi decided against benching Granderson, who is 1 for 16 (.063) with nine strikeouts in the series. He did not want to start Brett Gardner, who has been limited to three at-bats since mid-April because of an elbow injury that required surgery.

"If Grandy stays in his zone, he will be fine," Girardi said. "That's the big thing he has to concentrate on."

How much is Romney backed in Britain?

Most of the British public and political class ? including many Tories ? prefer President Obama to his Republican challenger, but Mitt Romney is not without fans among the British government.

In this photo from July 26, 2012, Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney meets with British Prime Minister David Cameron at 10 Downing Street in London. Despite a much criticized trip to London this summer, Mr. Romney has supporters among the British public and political class.

A visiting Mitt Romney stirred up a storm here last summer when he expressed concerns over Britain's readiness to host the Olympics ? prompting a backlash that included a rebuke from Prime Minister David Cameron. So one would be excused for thinking that the Republican presidential candidate is without cheerleaders in the UK.

But they do exist.

They?re fairly small in number in comparison with those getting behind President Obama, whose reelection is favored by more than 70 percent of Britons and whose admirers include not just the left but many in the Conservative Party itself.?

The Romney camp in the UK include the expat Republicans who will be cheering just as loudly as those at home when they gather next Wednesday to watch the second presidential debate at the offices of a law firm in London?s upmarket Saville Row.?Others include Mr. Romney?s recently uncovered "long lost" cousins in England?s northwest, where his ancestors lived for generations and converted to Mormonism before leaving for the United States in 1841.

But despite Mr. Cameron?s closeness to President Obama, passionate support remains for Romney among potentially influential sections of the British right, who are currently pressing for a deeper, sharper approach to British deficit reduction. To them, a Romney win would be a vindication of Conservative economic policy, as opposed to the Obama interventionism so often held up as a shining example by British advocates of a Keynesian approach to restoring growth.

Daniel Hannan, a Conservative member of the European Parliament and an articulate standard-bearer on his own party?s right wing, says he was rooting for Obama last time ? but that two things have changed.

?For one, the US debt level is not just a domestic problem. It?s a global problem when the leading economy in the free world is $16 trillion in debt and is adding to that yearly... [it] threatens a shift in power globally. Now, I don?t know if Mitt Romney is going to get on top of the deficit but I know, as everyone else does, that Obama isn?t.?

?The other is that from a purely an Anglosphere point of view, Romney is much better disposed to the other English-speaking democracies than Obama,? adds Mr. Hannan, who argues that British support for Obama has not been reciprocated until recently.

He lists evidence such as the symbolism of Obama receiving from the last prime minister, Gordon Brown, an ornamental pen-holder made with the timbers of a Victorian anti-slave ship and responding with a box set of DVDs ?including Die Hard 3, but not Die Hard 1 or 2.??
