Interlocking Brick Pavers

A new emerging trend in patio design industry is interlocking brick pavers. However it will not indicates that brick pavers had been not around rather these have already been by using in developing patios all around the environment. The problem was that most people would try to tackle patios as a do-it-yourself project, resigning to the fact that there might be lumps and errors that they were willing to accept.
www.ephenry.com/outdoor-fire-pits.aspx

More to the point, the problem was that so many people built really bad patios. Awful ones, to be exact. Those were not unstable and were pathetic in design and also causing more trips and falls as others comparatively. Furthermore an individual just can?t find a extensive color collection for brick other than possessing red and yellow.

Brick Revival

Along came these big box home stores that sell everything from cabinet hardware to mulch, and now brick makers had a new place to strut their products. This time their product would include new colors, new shapes, and even a different construction that would aid any do-it-yourselfer in making the best patio possible.

What came out of this was interlocking brick pavers, sometimes called interlocking concrete pavers. This little beauties can be found in any home store, nearly any hardware store, and definitely at every nursery around. With interlocking concrete pavers you will have satisfaction that rains were not be able to destroy them because of their compact interlocking design.

Another advantage is that whomever installs interlocking brick pavers doesn?t have to sweat over accurate spacing because these concrete pavers are built to have uniform spacing.

Are interlocking pavers are acceptable for your house?

There is no reason to think that you have to install these interlocking pavers yourself. What you need to do is to chose the color and design of patios and call a patio builder to install them for you within limited period of time.

Investors want strategy shakeup at BP

(Reuters) - BP's shareholders want to see some radical management action to help the company turn the page on U.S. oil spill litigation and the quarrel with its Russian partners.

Both issues have dragged on the value of a company that was once Britain's biggest, but which now languishes in sixth place with a tainted reputation in the two countries that together account for half its oil output.

A move to jettison the refining, petrochemicals and fuel retailing businesses that distinguish an "integrated" oil and gas company from one that just finds and produces the stuff is one potential step.

Another might be a bold takeover deal to deliver the big blocks of future output the larger players in the industry are struggling to find.

"The integrated model isn't delivering best value to shareholders. You look at Shell and Total and ENI - no-one has demonstrated that the integrated model works particularly well," said Stephen Thornber of Threadneedle Investments, a top 20 investor in BP.

"I would favor a much cleaner, much more upstream focused business which can utilize BP's exploration, development and production skills and reduce its exposure to the dilutive refining and petrochemical business."

U.S.-based ConocoPhillips this year spun off its refining and marketing arm to become the world number one pure exploration and production (E&P) company. Smaller Marathon Oil has done the same.

TOUGH COMPETITION

Refining assets - the main part of BP's business outside the dominant E&P or "upstream" side - can provide a temporary profit counterweight when crude prices are falling, and together with marketing they offer cost saving opportunities.

But many older refineries are distant from supplies and face competition from bigger, modern ones that are closer. In Europe and the United States in particular, where most BP refineries sit, players face regulatory and planning issues that make it tough to compete with new plants in India and the Middle East.

BP's "downstream" - refining, petrochemicals, lubricants and fuel retailing businesses - is profitable, but its 16 wholly and partly-owned refineries alone tie up $44 billion of capital.

The business is shrinking already and has been for over a decade. BP hopes to sell this year its Texas City refinery, another blot on its U.S. reputation after a 2005 explosion killed 15 people. It also plans to further reduce its 21,800 road fuel stations to help squeeze out $2 billion of cost savings this year.

Analysts estimate BP's refining business is worth about $20 billion, with marketing, lubricants and petrochemicals worth a further $14 billion - although in the current tough refining environment a buyer might be hard to find.

Another $25-$30 billion could become available if BP sells out of the Russian joint venture, TNK-BP it entered in 2003, as has said it is considering.

Such a move is by no means a certainty. BP's partners in the venture, a group of oligarchs whose uneasy relationship with the powerful Russian government and differing strategic vision for the business have hamstrung its activities, are not easy partners for any potential buyer.

BP has 29 percent of its production tied up in the business, and even if it does sell its 50 percent stake, there is every chance the cash will be ploughed back into Russia, the world's biggest oil producing country and number two exporter behind Saudi Arabia.

"If I was going to bet, I would say BP won't be leaving Russia," said a former BP executive with Russian experience. "Either there will be a new partner or it will get out (of TNK-BP) and recycle its investment elsewhere in the country."

CLOSURE

On the other side of the financial equation stands a compensation settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice over the 2010 explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig that killed 11 people and triggered the United States' worst offshore oil spill from the Macondo well in the U.S. Gulf.

The parties are about $10 billion apart on a figure, with BP wanting to pay $15 billion and the DoJ holding out for $25 billion, according to a recent Financial Times report.

BP has already put aside about $3.5 billion, so a worst-case scenario has the company needing to find a further $21.5 billion.

But closure for BP on the oil spill episode would take a lot of pressure off its share price.

Thomson Reuters data shows BP shares trading at 5.2 times earnings per share. A recovery to the 6.7 times earnings, where European peers Shell and Total trade, would add $36 billion to its $125 billion market capitalization.

Analysts who base their discount on tracking relative market value to pre-spill days say the potential for a value recovery could be much higher, at up to $70 billion.

TAKEOVER OPTION

If, as expected, the DoJ and BP hammer out a deal on spill compensation before U.S. presidential election in September, BP has a lot more money to play with.

Shareholders love a special dividend, but they love capital growth more.

"It's not going to be welcome as a buyer in the deepwater U.S. Gulf after what happened," said Robin Matthews, of JMW Energy Advisers, a division of auditors Deloitte.

"Onshore, you are looking at shale investment, and that's not the kind of high margin stuff they really want to be in. Where else can they really put that kind of money to work effectively?"

The answer could be in M&A, and what better fit than BG Plc - a gas-focused exploration and production company.

BG has the opposite problem from that of BP - plenty of projects and opportunities to pursue, but not enough funds.

The group has been shedding assets and issuing hybrid bonds in an effort to keep its best developments funded without stretching its balance sheet, and its long-serving chief executive, Frank Chapman, is due to retire in 2013.

"I am sure BG will be linked with them. They have some fabulous assets," said a second shareholder from among BP's 15 largest.

"The issue for BG is having enough cash to develop them all. So yes, I have heard sillier ideas. You do wonder whether Frank Chapman is looking for a big exit."

BG has been pitched as a takeover target ever since it was spun out of a former British state gas utility at the turn of the 21st Century but its high valuation could be difficult for a buyer.

In an industry where size means a lot, BG is in the small half of the Dow Jones oil and gas global titans index <.djteng> with a market value of $65 billion. But its shares trade at 13.6 times earnings - one of the highest in the index.

Whatever BP decides to do on the M&A front and with its downstream business, and whatever its fate at the hands of U.S. and Russian officials, shareholders want to see some action from Chief Executive Bob Dudley, the Russia veteran who took over after Tony Hayward fell on his sword for the oil spill.

"It's definitely true they are lacking strategic direction and they are running out of time to clarify that," said a third shareholder.

"If you have great assets, even if you make some appalling strategic errors - you'll most likely end up fine. So when Dudley can put Macondo and the Russian sale to bed, he will absolutely have the ammunition to create something brilliant."

Texas Tech Women's Rodeo Team Takes National Championship

ttu.edu

A Texas Tech team has won their first national championship.

The Texas Tech University women?s rodeo team took their first national championship late Saturday evening, at the 64th annual College National Finals Rodeo.

The Red Raiders finished with 423.3 points, beating Central Wyoming College and Sam Houston State University at the event in Casper, Wyoming. Texas A&M finished 20th.

Texas Tech?s men?s rodeo team won the national championship in 1955, and several other men and women have taken individual national championships, but Saturday night marked the first national championship for the entire women?s team.

The team consisted of members Bailey Guthrie, Haley Nelson, Jessica Frost, and Taylor Langdon.

The women?s team took the Southwest region championship with two regular-season events left, and entered the CNFR ranked seventh in the nation.

Separately, Nelson won reserve national champion in barrel racing, and Langdon finished fifth. Guthrie finished 10th in goat tying.

?I feel very happy for each of the girls, their families, and Texas Tech University friends and alumni,? said Chris Guay, rodeo coach and animal and food science instructor. ?History was made for them as they came together as a team and had a remarkable year.?

Karin Kamp: Women in Space: Space for Women

This past weekend, China sent its first woman into space. When reading about Liu Yang's trip I was touched by what Mae Jemison -- the first African-American female astronaut -- had to say. She grew up during NASA's Apollo era of space travel, and as a child, was irritated by the lack of women involved who could have been role models for her.

If I had seen someone like me involved in NASA when I was a little girl, it would have given me a great big grin and made things a whole lot easier when I was starting out... It's not just that you can see yourself in that position, but also the fact that then other people understand that there is a wide range of talent to draw from.

Jemison on why including women is a no-brainer:

China has tremendous talent and resources, but if you don't bring all your best players in, you're not going to have the best opportunities to understand how things can be better, and how to make stuff happen more effectively. I'm very excited that women will be included on this flight.

Jemison served aboard the space shuttle Endeavour in September 1992 and has certainly been a role model for many young girls and women here in the United States.

But then something else struck me. America has killed the space program! And China is now following in our footsteps -- and perhaps will advance far beyond -- so where does that leave us?

Seeking advanced partner (s).

Greetings,

I am currently looking for literate and descriptive players that I can either join or collaborate with.
Though there are many roleplays out on RPG, I am having a difficult time finding other writers that
enjoy writing in length like I do. I am looking to create either a small-scale roleplay with a few
good partners, or roleplay that I can join myself. Please take a gander at my current characters
and writing style before getting back to me, just so you can get a small idea of how I play.

Current Cravings:

A modern theme; several souls caught in a deadly snare. A detective, a serial killer, a police
officer, a chief's daughter perhaps? Characters I am not sure of, but it could be an interesting plot.

A true post-apocalyptic theme. Anyone ever seen or read The Road? Something like that.
No zombies, no mutants, nothing. Takes place after the world's ruin through war and
disaster, and survivors have resorted to cannibalism and primitive means to survive.

A western theme, and a good one. Likely including a small apache tribe trying to survive
a massive decline in their numbers and a small town under the threat of gang-members.

A private one-on-one; two characters both working for rivalling companies that deal in
espionage and assassination. They have been sent out to kill each-other with minimal description:
the catch is, they know each-other in real life.

An Egyptian theme, anyone? I have seen a lot of greek roleplays, but a severe lack in
stories that take place on the other side of the continent. What about Persia and Egypt? Thinking
about a story that revolves around the time the Romans began to deal with the Egyptians.

A noir theme, 1940's-1950's with a Mafia and crime type setting. Would like to do it, have
no idea what the plot could be though.

Do any of these strike your fancy? Let me know!

Suu Kyi to make bittersweet return to Oxford

(AP) ? Before Aung San Suu Kyi was a prisoner of conscience and a political icon, she inhabited a world of children's birthday parties, university libraries and bicycle-filled English suburbs.

The leader of Myanmar's democracy movement spent years in the university city of Oxford with her English academic husband and their two sons. She left one day in 1988 to care for her sick mother, thinking she would be gone for weeks. Almost a quarter of a century later, she is about to return for the first time.

On Monday, Suu Kyi begins a weeklong trip to Britain as part of a European tour. Her itinerary includes talks with Prime Minister David Cameron, an address to Parliament and a meeting with Prince Charles.

But the most bittersweet moment will likely be her homecoming to Oxford, where on Wednesday the 66-year-old will finally accept the honorary doctorate she was awarded in 1993, while she was under house arrest in Yangon.

Oxford looks much the same as when she left, a traffic-clogged jumble of spires and bridges and Gothic college buildings. But her children are grown and her beloved husband, Michael Aris, is dead.

"I'm sure within herself it'll be an extremely emotional moment," said Peter Popham, author of "The Lady and the Peacock," a biography of Suu Kyi. "When she left in March 1988 she expected to be away for a while, possibly a few months, but certainly not 24 years."

Suu Kyi arrived in Oxford in 1964 from a background marked by both privilege and tragedy.

She had been educated at a convent school in New Delhi, where her mother was ambassador for the country then known as Burma. Her father, Gen. Aung San, a political leader who negotiated Burma's independence from Britain, had been assassinated by political rivals in 1947, when she was 2.

She studied politics, philosophy and economics at Oxford University's then-women-only St. Hugh's College, a handsome collection of red brick Edwardian buildings set in extensive gardens.

Student friend Ann Pasternak Slater recalled a striking figure whose "firm moral convictions and inherited social grace contrasted sharply with the tatty dress and careless manners, vague liberalism and uncertain sexual morality" of her English counterparts.

Suu Kyi was not a party animal ? she tasted alcohol just once, to see what it was like ? but did embrace other Oxford traditions.

In the essay collection "Freedom From Fear," Pasternak Slater described her learning to operate a punt ? Oxford's characteristic flat-bottomed boats ? and to ride a bicycle, swapping her traditional Burmese long skirt, the lungi, for a pair of white jeans.

While at Oxford, Suu Kyi met Aris, a Himalayan scholar who later served as tutor to the children of the king of Bhutan. They married in 1972 ? on condition that if her country ever needed her, she would go.

Neither imagined how high the price would be.

"She thought she might go to Burma one day to set up a mobile library once the kids were grown and Michael was retired," said Rebecca Frayn, screenwriter of "The Lady," a recent feature film about Suu Kyi. "They had a little dream that he would grow orchids."

The couple lived in Bhutan and London, then settled in Oxford when Aris got an academic post. Suu Kyi looked after sons Alexander and Kim and pursued doctoral studies.

Frayn said the future Nobel peace laureate embraced her role as academic wife and "utterly devoted mother."

"She was famed for her exquisitely organized birthday parties," Frayn said. "The common thing is that she did whatever she did to the Nth degree."

In March 1988, Suu Kyi returned to Myanmar to nurse her dying mother, and found herself on the front line of mass pro-democracy protests that erupted soon after. The hospital where her mother was being treated was inundated with injured demonstrators.

As the daughter of a national hero, Suu Kyi was an instant emblem of the movement. She embraced her destiny and helped form the National League for Democracy ? with the support of her far-off husband.

"From the outset, they knew it was a tough decision to go into politics," Popham said. "But I don't think any of them had an idea of how hard it was going to be. Michael thought the regime would collapse within months and they would be reunited by Christmas 1988."

In fact, Aris saw his wife only a handful of times after she left Oxford.

The NLD won elections in 1990, but was kept from power by the military junta. Suu Kyi spent much of the next 20 years under house arrest, finally being released in November 2010. In April, she won a seat in the country's national assembly, and is campaigning for further reform.

The couple's predicament took a cruel twist in 1997, when Aris was diagnosed with what turned out to be terminal prostate cancer. The junta would have allowed Suu Kyi to leave Myanmar to visit him ? but she feared she would not be allowed to return. He applied 30 times for visas to visit her; all were rejected.

"He was adamant she shouldn't come back," Frayn said. "He was convinced (his visa) would be granted and he would die in her arms."

Aris died in Oxford on his 53rd birthday in 1999. He had not seen his wife in more than three years.

Frayn said the years of separation had left a "complex emotional legacy" for Suu Kyi's sons, now in their 30s.

Kim Aris lives in Oxford and has visited his mother several times since her release from house arrest. Elder brother Alexander ? who at age 18 delivered the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize address on behalf of his mother ? lives in a Buddhist community in Portland, Oregon. Neither has given interviews to the media.

Suu Kyi, too, rarely speaks of her emotions ? a reflection, Frayn said, both of her Buddhist faith and of her political convictions.

"She is surrounded in the National League for Democracy by people who spent many years in prison, and in some senses her context is that she got off lightly compared to a lot of her close political colleagues," Frayn said. "She has said that this is in a sense her cross to bear, the long-term separation from her sons.

"A journalist once said to her that her story was like a Greek tragedy. She absolutely rebuked him and said: I made a choice."

(AP) ? His beating stunned the nation, left Los Angeles smoldering and helped reshape race relations and police tactics. And in a quavering voice on national television, Rodney King pleaded for peace while the city burned.

But peace never quite came for King ? not after the fires died down, after two of the officers who broke his skull multiple times were punished, after Los Angeles and its flawed police department moved forward. His life, which ended Sunday at age 47 after he was pulled from the bottom of his swimming pool, was a continual struggle even as the city he helped change moved on.

The images ? preserved on an infamous grainy video ? of the black driver curled up on the ground while four white officers clubbed him over 50 times with batons ? became a national symbol of police brutality in 1991. More than a year later, when the officers' acquittals touched off one of the most destructive race riots in history, his scarred face and softspoken question ? "Can we all get along?" ? spurred the nation to confront its difficult racial history.

But while Los Angeles race relations and the city's police department made strides forward, King kept coming before police and courts, struggling with alcohol addiction and arrests, periodically re-appearing publicly for a stint on "Celebrity Rehab" or a celebrity boxing match. He spent the last months of his life promoting a memoir he titled "The Riot Within: From Rebellion to Redemption."

King was declared dead at a hospital after his fianc?e called 911 at 5:25 a.m. to say she found him submerged in the pool at his home in Rialto, about an hour's drive from Los Angeles. Officers found King in the deep end of the pool, pulled him out and tried unsuccessfully to revive him with CPR.

An autopsy was expected to determine the cause of death within two days; police found no alcohol or drug paraphernalia near the pool and said foul play wasn't suspected. King's next-door neighbor said that around 3 a.m., she heard music and someone "really crying, like really deep emotions. ... Like tired or sad, you know?"

"I then heard someone say, 'OK, Please stop. Go inside the house.' ... We heard quiet for a few minutes Then after that we heard a splash in the back."

King's death was a grim ending to a saga that began 21 years earlier when he fled from police after he was stopped for speeding. The 25-year-old, on parole from a robbery conviction had been drinking, which he later said led him to try to evade police. He was finally stopped by four Los Angeles police officers who struck him more than 50 times with their batons, kicked him and shot him with stun guns. He was left with 11 skull fractures, a broken eye socket and facial nerve damage.

A man who had quietly stepped outside his home to observe the commotion videotaped most of it and turned a copy over to a TV station. It was played over and over for the following year, inflaming racial tensions across the country.

It seemed that the videotape would be the key evidence to a guilty verdict against the officers, whose felony assault trial was moved to the predominantly white suburb of Simi Valley, Calif. Instead, on April 29, 1992, a jury with no black members acquitted three of the officers on state charges in the beating; a mistrial was declared for a fourth.

Violence erupted immediately, starting in Los Angeles. They lasted for three days, killing 55 people, injuring more than 2,000 and setting swaths of Los Angeles aflame, causing $1 billion in damage. Police, seemingly caught off-guard, were quickly outnumbered by rioters and retreated. As the uprising spread to the city's Koreatown area, shop owners armed themselves and engaged in running gun battles with looters.

King ? who said in his memoir that FBI agents had urged him to keep a low profile if the officers were acquitted, expecting violence ? appeared at a news conference on the third day, asking for an end to the uprising. "Can we all get along?" he asked ? a question the city and nation have struggled to answer ever since.

Although the four officers who beat King ? Stacey Koon, Theodore Briseno, Timothy Wind and Laurence Powell ? were acquitted of state charges, Koon and Powell were convicted of federal civil rights charges and were sentenced to more than two years in prison. King received a $3.8 million civil judgment; one of the jurors in the case, Cynthia Kelley, is his fianc?e.

But he quickly lost the money as he invested in a record label and other failed ventures. He was arrested multiple times for drunken driving ? including last summer in Riverside, Calif.

Despite his troubles, King remained upbeat as he confronted the 20 year anniversary of the LA riots and considered his legacy.

"America's been good to me after I paid the price and stayed alive through it all," he told The Associated Press in an interview earlier this year. "This part of my life is the easy part now."

He had three daughters and was engaged to Kelley.

He returned to the spotlight earlier this year as historians and news outlets explored the impact of the riots on its 20th anniversary, including the reforms made by the Los Angeles Police Department.

"Through all that he had gone through with his beating and his personal demons he was never one to not call for reconciliation and for people to overcome and forgive," Rev. Al Sharpton said Sunday. "History will record that it was Rodney King's beating and his actions that made America deal with the excessive misconduct of law enforcement."

Attorney Harland Braun, who represented one of the police officers, Briseno, in his federal trial, said King's case never would have gained the prominence it did without the videotape of his beating.

"If there hadn't been a video there would have never been a case," Braun said. "In those days, you might have claimed excessive force but there would have been no way to prove it."

The video also sparked an examination of Los Angeles police tactics under then-Police Chief Daryl Gates.

"The Rodney King beating stands as a landmark in the recent history of law enforcement, comparable to the Scottsboro case in 1931 and the Serpico case in 1967," said a July 1991 report produced by an independent commission led by Warren Christopher, who later became Secretary of State.

The report determined that despite many good officers, there were "a significant number of officers in the LAPD who repetitively use excessive force against the public."

Despite that scrutiny, the department continued to face scandals and critics of its practices until the U.S. government intervened. The department operated under a decade-long consent decree with the U.S. Justice Department' civil rights division to implement reforms on how it uses force and handles complaints; the department also gained more civilian oversight. The decree wasn't formally lifted until 2009.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who knew King for years, said he was more of a victim than a hero, and that his death reminded the nation of how far it still needs to go.

Gardea described King as a quiet neighbor until Sunday morning. Cory Hudson, King's cousin who lives nearby, said King enjoyed swimming and was known to get into the pool at night.

"It's just sad. I feel bad for all the family members," Hudson said. "It's been rough. And he was just getting his life really together."

Braun, the attorney saw King as "a sad figure swept up into something bigger than he was.

"He wasn't a hero or a villain."

Using new media, Chinese try out food activism

BEIJING ? Shanghai grad student Wu Heng hadn't planned to become a food activist but he couldn't stop himself after reading a news story about cooks slathering pork in chemicals to make it look and smell like costlier cuts of beef.

Wu says he was shocked and disgusted that people were making fake beef, and decided to create a Web site so that consumers could be better informed about these kinds of scams.

Furious over nonstop food scandals, from poison milk to toxic cooking oil, ordinary Chinese are taking food safety into their own hands and getting a help from technology.

Consumers are spreading the word about the latest scares with Web sites and a mobile phone applications. The empowerment is unusual in a country where the authoritarian government discourages activism.

AMD previews FirePro W9000 graphics, possibly throws in dualchip Radeon HD 7990 for good measure

AMD's CTO Mark Papermaster may have just dropped a minor graphics bombshell at the end of the AMD Fusion Developer Summit. His presentation was officially to show off the FirePro W9000, a beast of a workstation graphics card with 6GB of GDDR5 memory, a 264.8-megapixel fill rate and four teraflops of single-precision math. While the screen behind him showed the one-fan FirePro card, however, he was clearly holding another, three-fan card in his hands -- and though it could be that the W9000's cooling system went through a major revision between presentation slide and production, it may be a clue to a gamer-friendly Radeon part instead. Attendees like Tweakers.net have reason to believe it might be the Radeon HD 7990, a long-rumored dual-chip version of the 7900 series for the very upper echelons of gamers. If so, the bets are on it keeping up the tradition of having two slightly underclocked versions of AMD's fastest chip (here the Radeon HD 7970) working in tandem to produce a big leap in speed despite occupying the same two card slots. AMD hasn't set the matter straight with either a yea or a nay, but with NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 690 largely cornering the high-end market unopposed, it's tough to picture AMD simply twiddling its thumbs.

Pentagon announces gay pride ceremony in recognition of troops

Less than nine months after the repeal of "don't ask don't tell", the US military has announced that it will participate in this month's celebration of gay pride.

The Pentagon is to organise the first official event to recognise gay and lesbian troops. The move, first reported by Associated Press, was heralded by lesbian and gay groups as a sign of how quickly the military has acted to open up the services in the wake of the repeal.

"This is a tremendous accomplishment to be happening not one year since the repeal of don't ask, don't tell," said Josh Seefried, an air force lieutenant with the Joint Base Maguire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey.

Seefried made a comparison with the British military services, where despite the lifting of a ban on gays in the military ten years ago, it took some time for gay service personnel to be open about their sexuality. "Here, on day one we had more than 100 come out in all branches of the military," he said.

The Pentagon has declined to give details of the event that it will organise as part of pride month. But it is certain to involve the saluting of gay and lesbian troops, in an echo of how African American and other ethnic groups are celebrated at different times in the annual calendar.

The event will be the latest in the rolling out of the new tolerance within the military. Don't ask, don't tell, which was introduced under President Clinton in 1993, forced the discharge of more than 13,000 men and women sacked for revealing their sexual orientation.

The impressively rapid shift in culture has been evident in other ways. OutServe, the association of actively serving LGBT military personnel in which Seefried is a co-director, has grown rapidly since the repeal last September.

Under DADT, OutServe had about 1,700 members all of whom were taking a risk by attaching their names to the group. Now membership has grown to 5,700.

Last October more than 200 openly gay personnel gathered in Las Vegas for a conference to discuss the new policy, in the presence of active duty officers from several other countries. In December America rejoiced at the "first kiss" ashore ? in this case between a female naval officer and her girlfriend http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/dec/23/sailors-us-navy-gay-kiss .

Red, White and ?Blues? Party | drinkmyblog

There is nothing more American than the Fourth of July! This is the one time of year that we actually like gathering with our neighbors on the lawn, on the balcony or rooftop, or in the cul-de-sac.? With red, white and a Memphis blues twist, your occasion can be memorable! Think ?Ole? Man River? playing and a tantalizing buffet with heart and soul.

The star attractions? Delicious SMIRNOFF? Blueberry martinis, authentic Memphis blues, delicious red, white and blue food, and unique d?cor all help set the down-home Mississippi delta atmosphere.

ATMOSPHERE

  • Your guests should arrive through a festive doorway or into a backyard setting with tables that are draped with red, white and blue fabric?very inexpensive versions can be found! Or use paper gossamer, available at online party supply stores.
  • Tables can also be covered in red, white or blue tablecloths.
  • Red, white and blue candles lit before guests enter.
  • Have red, white and blue flowers on serving tables.
  • Mini American flags could be scattered around for all guests.
  • Pull out the whites for your table:? white plates, serving dishes?and pick up some red and blue cloth napkins?you can even use red handkerchiefs as a fun casual touch, and wrap silverware up and tie up silverware with royal blue ribbons.
  • As most likely this will be outside, you can get Tiki Torches at home supply stores to set around for fun atmosphere after dark. Light them at dusk!
  • Fill oversized clear vases or jars with red, white and blue items?could just be balled up tissue paper, Christmas ornaments, anything and everything!
  • For a touch of twinkle, tie handfuls of Sparklers together with ribbon, and then rest in a red or blue basket. Distribute matchbooks to your guests, and then light up the night.
  • And the music should be playing.

Of course, the food, drinks and music are key to the overall atmosphere!

As guests enter, they will be greeted with the signature cocktail for this event, SMIRNOFF? Blueberry Dreams. ?And the party begins?.Ol? Man River, here we come!

THE SIGNATURE DRINK

Blueberry Dream

  • 1.5 oz SMIRNOFF? Blueberry Flavored Vodka
  • 3 oz. Fresh Lemonade
  1. Mix together in an ice filled Collins glass with a rim of course sugar.
  2. Garnish with blueberries and lemon wheels.

Another Fabulous ?blue? cocktail option is:

Blueberry Martini

  • 1.25 fl oz SMIRNOFF? Blueberry Flavored Vodka
  • 0.25 fl oz orange liqueur
  • 0.5 fl oz Lemon-Lime Soda
  1. Stir and strain to lose bubbles, and serve in a martini glass.
  2. Garnish with a lemon twist and blueberries.

MENU

The goal here is to have all the food red, white or blue, and totally Delta style! Use your creativity, but here are some ideas for you:

For starters, use Heirloom Tomato Bruschetta and White Queso with Blue Corn Chips.

Set out some bowls of strawberries in white bowls and blueberries with spoons, and bowls of marshmallows.

For a main course, try The Best Burgers and ?Yummy Memphis Ribs.?You may want to add Backyard Barbecued Chicken or Grilled Shrimp Skewers as an option!?

For some fabulous sides, try delicious Blue Potato Salad with Sherry Vinaigrette

and a Spicy Carrot Salad. Add in Jalapeno Cole Slaw for a real Memphis style vegetable!

Some local fresh baked dinner rolls are always a welcome touch.

Give them something sweet with Southern Blueberry and Strawberry Shortcakes.?

TIME SAVING TIPS

  • Whole Foods is a great stop for homemade whipped cream and shortcakes if you don?t have time to make them from scratch.
  • You can find pre grilled shrimp ? skewer it yourself. Set out some fun sauces, such as Neely or Rendezvous Barbecue Sauce (A Memphis style is preferred here!)
  • Make your SMIRNOFF? Blueberry Martinis ahead of time and chill in pitchers (preferably glass). Pour into a Shaker and shake and pour for extra atmosphere if you wish for refills, but you can have drinks ready on a table as guests enter. Add your blueberries to each glass prior to pouring for ahead of time prep.
  • Pull out your drink coolers and fill with ice/sodas/waters a few hours before the party?the ice will not melt and it?s one less thing to do!
  • Prep for recipes as far in advance as possible. You need to relax!
  • Inside?just make sure you have an accessible bathroom snazzed up with some fun hand-towels and a nice candle, and that you have an inside bar set-up in case the party comes indoors (it will, I promise).
  • THE PLAYLIST
    Here is an authentic Memphis Blues Playlist! Enjoy! ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ??

All in all, your friends and family will leave feeling patriotic from their dose of all-American cuisine and unique atmosphere. And hopefully, you will be thrilled with the memorable moments you have helped to create.
