The longest-match sequel falls flat at Wimbledon (AP)

WIMBLEDON, England ? Inevitably, the sequel didn't live up to the original. Not even close.

The replay of the longest match in tennis history turned out to be a ho-hum Part II, with John Isner beating Nicolas Mahut in straight sets in two hours in the first round at Wimbledon.

It was a far cry from the 2010 epic, in which Isner triumphed 70-68 in the fifth set of a marathon that lasted 11 hours, 5 minutes and stretched over three days.

"Nothing's going to live up to that match," the American said after winning Tuesday's contest 7-6 (4), 6-2, 7-6 (6). "It wasn't going to go that long."

On a day featuring Serena Williams' tears of joy after her long-awaited return to Grand Slam tennis and convincing wins by Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, Isner and Mahut faced each other again on the grass of the All England Club where they made history last year.

But it was all straightforward and mainly one-sided this time. It finished after 2 hours, 3 minutes, with Mahut sailing a forehand long on the second match point. This match lasted 9 hours, 2 minutes and 149 games less than the original.

"Everything was different," Mahut said. "It's another year, another match, another tournament. It was difficult to play this match. We talked about last year during three days. That was not easy. But he handled (it) much better than I did."

Last year's match was played on Court 18, which now has a plaque commemorating the event. They played Tuesday on the new Court 3, which was half empty by the end of the match.

"I'm actually glad they put out here on this court," Isner said. "I don't know if they want to tarnish the legacy of Court 18 by playing a second time."

At the end, the two men ? who became close friends after last year's encounter ? shared a warm embrace at the net. Isner dominated play, breaking three times and finishing with 41 winners to only 10 unforced errors. Both men had eight aces.

"It wasn't easy, but obviously it was considerably quicker than the last time we played," Isner said. "I definitely wanted to finish it here and really glad I am because we were running out of daylight.

"It's a nice feeling I don't have to sleep on finishing this match."

Isner sympathized with the Frenchman, who seemed to be struggling with a knee problem.

"He has nothing to hang his head about at all," Isner said. "He fought just as hard today. Maybe he wasn't 100 percent. ... Really, it stinks for him that he's out now."

Isner, who lost in the second round last year to Thiemo de Bakker, said his goal is now to make it into the second week.

"I was more relieved last year to finally get it over with because what we did was remarkable, and you can't ever think something like that could happen," he said. "But I also knew after last year's match that I had no shot in the second round. That was kind of tough to swallow. This year I'm happy to get through this one."

Mahut was philosophical about how things turned out.

"What we did last year, it's much more than a tennis match," he said. "I'm very proud of it. But this is from last year. Today I just lost the match in three sets. It's a different story."

With showers in the forecast, Wednesday's schedule features five-time champion Venus Williams playing on Centre Court in the second round against 40-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm, followed by defending men's champion Rafael Nadal against Ryan Sweeting. Among other top names scheduled to play are Andy Murray, Andy Roddick and Juan Martin del Potro.

Few matches are likely to inspire the type of emotion that overtook Serena Williams after her 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 first-round win on Centre Court over Aravane Rezai.

The four-time champion, returning to the main stage after missing nearly a year with serious health problems, broke into tears within seconds of ending the match with an ace.

"It definitely was so emotional for me because throughout the last 12 months, I've been through a lot of things that's not normal, things you guys don't even know about," she said. "It's just been a long, arduous road. To stand up still is pretty awesome."

Williams, who underwent two foot operations and was hospitalized with blood clots in her lungs, played her first competitive matches since last year's Wimbledon at the grass-court tuneup in Eastbourne last week.

"It's been a disaster year, but I've been praying," Williams said. "To be able to come back at Wimbledon is pretty awesome. I didn't expect to play. And I didn't expect to even do anything. So I'm just excited. I've never cried with joy for anything.

"For me it wasn't about winning the match," she said. "It was about being out there. ... It just really goes to show if you don't give up, you still have a chance. I guess I proved that I could, that I could. I think that sums it up: I could."

Rezai was impressed by Williams' play and touched by her outpouring.

"It shows she's not a machine, she's a human being," Rezai said.

Federer began his chase for a record-equaling seventh Wimbledon championship by beating Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-2. The third-seeded Swiss won 29 of 31 of his points on serve in the first set and lost just 12 points on serve for the match.

Just as imposing was second-seeded Djokovic, playing for the first time since his 43-match winning streak was stopped by Federer at the French Open. He dropped just 11 points on serve as he beat Jeremy Chardy of France, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1.

Migrants taking 9 in 10 new jobs, since the election, coalition poverty czar reveals

Frank Field: Revealed that 9 out of 10 of the 400,000 new jobs have gone to immigrants in the last year

Almost nine out of ten jobs created since the election went to immigrants, the Coalition?s poverty czar has revealed.

Former Labour minister Frank Field, brought in to advise the Government last year, criticised David Cameron?s plans to reform welfare as nowhere near radical enough ? because they do not punish the workshy or reward those who have contributed to National Insurance.

He also said he believed the public wanted tougher sanctions forcing the long-term unemployed back to work.

Mr Field dismissed proposals to simplify the benefits system as nothing more than ?Gordon Brown?s approach, on speed?.

?Good, reliable? people who have worked hard and paid NI should be helped more than those who have not, he said.

Figures uncovered by Mr Field show that in the first year of the Coalition, 87 per cent of the 400,000 newly created jobs have gone to immigrants, because Britons are too lazy to chase work.

Embarrassingly for Mr Cameron, the proportion of new jobs going to immigrants is actually higher now than it was in Labour?s last year in office.

?

But his attempts to get to grips with the problem have to some extent been scuppered by Business Secretary, Vince Cable, who opposes an immigration cap.

Benefits: Iain Duncan Smith has unveiled plans to simply the system

Benefits: Iain Duncan Smith has unveiled plans to simply the system

In an article for the Daily Telegraph, Mr Field said: ?I fear that, at the next election, we will still be having the same debate on welfare reform as we had at the last four.? And he said tougher sanctions were needed to force back to work those who refused jobs that they believed ?were only fit for immigrants?.

Mr Field said: ?This group of recidivist, workless claimants know from past experience governments leave them alone.?

Iain Duncan Smith, the Work and Pensions Secretary, has unveiled plans to simplify benefits into a single universal credit designed to ensure those in work are always better off.

Last night, a source close to Mr Duncan Smith said the figures on immigrant workers were a Labour legacy.

The source said: ?When faced with young, sparky Eastern Europeans coming here to work, it is essential that Britons have the skills to compete.?

Pfizer, Acura say FDA clears new painkiller Oxecta ? Health ...

?

?

NEW YORK ? Pfizer Inc. and Acura Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Monday the Food and Drug Administration approved a powerful painkiller that is designed to be harder to abuse.

The FDA cleared marketing of Oxecta as an immediate-release treatment for moderate to severe pain. The drug is designed to discourage common methods of abuse like crushing or dissolving, and it contains a compound that irritates the nose if it is snorted.

Shares of Acura, based in Palatine, Ill., rose 78 cents, or 20.2 percent, to $4.65 in afternoon trading. Earlier in the day its shares surged as much as 75.7 percent. Pfizer stock was unchanged at $20.26.

Oxecta is similar to Purdue Pharma LP?s OxyContin, the top-selling painkiller in the U.S. Regulators and health officials have pushed hard to get alternatives on the market after reports showed millions of people were abusing OxyContin and other prescription painkillers.

Acura and King Pharmaceuticals developed Oxecta under the name Acurox. Pfizer of New York bought King for $3.6 billion, and Oxecta is the first of King?s drugs to be approved since the deal closed in March. A second approval could come Thursday, as Pfizer is waiting for the FDA to return a decision on the drug candidate Remoxy.

OxyContin is an extended-release painkiller, however, and Citi Investment Research analyst John Boris said those drugs represent a larger market. Boris said annual sales of Oxecta could rise as high as $100 million, but Remoxy sales could reach $500 million a year.

Unlike those drugs, Oxecta is designed to start working right away.

Boris said he does not believe Remoxy will be approved this week, as Pfizer has disclosed a manufacturing issue that could delay approval. Remoxy was developed by Durect Corp. and licensed by Pain Therapeutics Inc. Pfizer now holds a sublicense from Pain Therapeutics.

Charlie Day in Talks for Pacific Rim

Comedy and Guillermo Del Toro don't exactly go hand in hand. However, for his upcoming film 'Pacific Rim,' the director is in talks to bring on one of the funniest actors in show business: Charlie Day from 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.'

If you are not familiar with Charlie's antics on 'It's Always Sunny,' he is best known on the show for his bad hygiene, rat-hunting abilities, and pretending to be a lawyer.

Hit the jump to find out what role Day would end up playing as well as what we already know about the film.

Day is currently in talks to play a professor. The movie, which already includes fellow FX star Charlie Hunnam from 'Sons of Anarchy,' is about an alien invasion on earth where humans are forced defend themselves using huge robots.

Although he will be in a robot vs. alien flick that's going to be pretty action-heavy, we have to assume Day will be providing a little comic relief.

What are your thoughts on Charlie Day being in an alien invasion movie?

Bushnell BackTrack D-Tour personal GPS takes you home, shows you how it got you there

We've seen our fair share of uncomplicated (and under-featured) GPS units, but the Bushnell BackTrack D-Tour throws in just enough tricks to make our inner techno-mountain-man salivate. The D-Tour does away with onboard maps and turn-by-turn directions for five simple waypoints and a digital compass. Lose your way? Just follow the arrow back to the campsite. When you get home, you can dump your hiking data into Bushnell's map application, which will show you exactly where you've been, how far you traveled, and how fast you trekked. Its also a built in digital compass, clock, thermometer, and altimeter. Not too shabby, but a bit steep at $120, considering you'll still need to provide your own maps. Hit the break for a video of the doodad's track recording and mapping software.

Bad News for Wall Street, Good News for Main Street | Mother Jones

Despite resurgent profits among the titans of finance, Wall Street is slimming down. As the New York Times' Dealbook reports today, heavyweights like Goldman Sachs and Bank of America are shaving operating costs and planning to lay off employees. Morgan Stanley, the Times says, could jettison at least 300 brokers and cut $1 billion in expenses not related to pay.

For the well-heeled denizens of big finance, that's bad news. For the rest of America, it could be cause for celebration.

Here's why. Over the past two decades, we've witnessed the "financialization" of America, in which Wall Street and the banking sector have gobbled up an ever-greater share of American wealth. As economist Henry Kaufman has noted, the ten largest financial institutions controlled 10 percent of financial assets in the US in 1990; by 2008, their control had grown to a whopping 60 percent. And when Princeton economics professor Hyun Song Shin studied the flow of cash in the American economy, he found that, between 1954 and 1980, nearly all sectors grew tenfold. That trend continued from 1980 to 2008, but with one major exception: the securities industry grew 100-fold, largely thanks to the deregulatory frenzy presided over by Reagan, Clinton, and Bush I and II. As my colleague Kevin Drum pointed out, by the mid-2000s financial industry profits had spiked to 40 percent of all corporate profits in America, while Wall Street pay had doubled and bonuses sextupled.

Drawn to that wealth were some of the brightest minds to graduate from America's top universities. The best engineers and scientists weren't necessarily designing solar panels or building the best electric cars; they were working as high-paid "quants," algorithm-writing mathematicians, and high-frequency traders on Wall Street. Granted, the flow of graduates to jobs in finance lessened during the recent financial crisis, but there's no doubt Wall Street remains an enticing and lucrative option for the best and brightest. As Harvard economist Benjamin Friedman lamented, "It's all the more troubling when I think that, after [students] leave us, so many of them go into activities that are not economically productive for the country, for society, even, just narrowly, for the economy."

So the news that Wall Street is trimming its ranks, whether prompted by the European debt crisis or the fear that aspects of the Dodd-Frank law might pinch the financial industry's profits, is perhaps an early sign of waning influence, a modest rolling back of the financialization trend. Maybe the coming years will see big finance relinquish some of its grip on American wealth while still doing the important work of allocating capital when needed. Or maybe it's a temporary blip, an aberration. Either way, with ordinary people still stinging from the pain of the financial crisis, it's obvious that an economy controlled by Wall Street is an economy that simply doesn't work for most Americans.

Ask the Yangxifu: Chinese Boyfriend Seems Too Chinese To Western Girlfriend

A worried Chinese man

When a Western woman tells her Chinese boyfriend he's "too Chinese," he wonders -- is "too Chinese" unattractive to Western women?

Seborga asks;

my fiance has been together with me for 4 years. she always mentioning that it won?t be possible for her to be together with me if I were too Chinese. Since I have been overseas for 13 years since I was 16, she thinks I have the same wave length of thinking as her. I had few western gfs, and most of them taking ?Chineseness? as something very negative. So does that mean thinking and behaving as a total chinese is very unatttractive in the eyes of mainstream western women?

??

Personally, I don?t really know exactly what your fiancee means by being ?too Chinese? ? a label that strikes me more as offensive than helpful.

I do know that mainstream Western women don?t always have the best impressions of Chinese men. Just look at the results of Dr. Jiehai Zhang?s study on what Western women think of Chinese men:

The survey shows, according to Western women, the most praiseworthy strengths of Chinese men were categorized as ?looking after one?s family,? ?willing to spend money on women,? ?relatively serious about relationships between men and women;? weaknesses included ?not so gentlemanly,? ?poor physique, not enough exercise,? ?no personality, lacking unique opinions.?

Confidence is often a big issue as well, which Zhang emphasizes in this (poorly translated) China Daily article about why Western women seem to give Chinese men the ?cold shoulder.?

But look, it?s not just about Chinese men. Asian men, as a whole, have a hard time dating Western women:

?Creepy can be fixed,? [J.T. Tran] explains to the standing-room-only crowd. ?Many guys just don?t realize how to project themselves.? These are the people whom Tran spends his days with, a new batch in a new city every week: nice guys, intelligent guys, motivated guys, who never figured out how to be successful with women. Their mothers had kept them at home to study rather than let them date or socialize.

Obviously, Chinese men have obstacles in their quest for Western women. But as for whether ?thinking and behaving as a total Chinese is unattractive,? I am not exactly sure how to answer that. Maybe what your fiancee means, in her own rude sort of way, is that mainstream Western women don?t usually go for very traditional, very conservative Chinese men. And I would actually agree with that, because I?ve always found the more unconventional Chinese men ? those willing to take chances, willing to ignore their parents to date/marry me, willing to be a little out of the norm ? more interesting and date-worthy.

I don?t know what it is your fiancee doesn?t like about you ? but it?s possible to change if you want to. She, however, needs to get specific about what that is, instead of just turning ?Chinese? into an insult that she hurls your way.

Personally, I find it a little weird that she?s your fiancee ? supposedly committed to marrying you ? and yet she threatens to leave if you don?t shape up. Maybe the question you should be asking yourself is, do you want to spend the rest of your life with her?

Good luck!

What advice do you have for Seborga?

Do you have a question about life, dating, marriage and family in China/Chinese culture (or Western culture)? Every Friday, I answer questions on my blog. Send me your question today.

RIM COO takes medical leave (AP)

TORONTO ? BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion says one of its top executives is on medical leave.

RIM spokeswoman Marisa Conway said Thursday that Chief Operating Officer Don Morrison will be on medical leave until later this year. Larry Conlee, who retired as COO in 2009, will return to the company as a special adviser.

The Canadian company is due to release its quarterly earnings after markets close Thursday.

RIM's stock is off 50 percent from its 52-week high. In April, the company slashed earnings and sales forecasts as it faces increased competition from Apple's iPhone and devices that run on Google's Android operating system.

Elizabeth Hurley, Arun Nayar granted divorce (AP)

LONDON ? Actress Elizabeth Hurley and businessman Arun Nayar have divorced after four years of marriage.

The divorce decree was granted at a brief hearing in London Wednesday by District Judge Penny Cushing.

Neither Hurley nor Nayar was in court.

The British actress and Indian businessman married in 2007 at an English castle, with singer Elton John giving the bride away. They followed up the private civil ceremony with a lavish and traditional Hindi wedding in Jodphur, India.

Hurley announced last December that the couple had separated. She has since been romantically linked to Australian cricket star Shane Warne.

Hurley, 46-years old, dated actor Hugh Grant for more than a decade and has a nine-year-old son, Damian, from a relationship with film producer Steve Bing.

Why the London Vaccine Summit Is a Triumph for Global Health

When the media writes about vaccines in the U.S. and Europe, usually we're reporting on the endless controversy over whether some vaccines cause autism. (Short answer: they don't.) That's the luxury of wealth and health ? thanks in no small part to the 20th-century legacy of mass vaccinations, virtually no parent in the developed world needs to worry that their child will be carried off by measles or rubella or polio or any of the other childhood diseases that once terrorized families. Vaccination is almost certainly the greatest triumph in the history of public health, even if it's one that many otherwise intelligent people feel free to turn their backs on.

In much of the developing world, however, access to vaccination can still mean the difference between life and death ? and too often, it's the latter. That's why Monday's news from London that the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisations (GAVI) had far surpassed its funding goals ? raising $4.3 billion ? is so welcome for global health.

The international charity, which promotes improved access to vaccines around the world, managed to pull in $600 million more in pledges than it had sought, thanks largely to a $1 billion gift from the Gates Foundation and a $1.34 billion donation from the British government. Money also came from the U.S., Norway, the Netherlands, Australia, France, Germany and Italy. GAVI says that the money will help immunize more than 250 million children in the developing world by 2015, and prevent more than 4 million premature deaths.

Addressing the London conference, British Prime Minister David Cameron noted that his country's gift alone would make a vast difference for public health:

This will help vaccinate over 80 million children and save 1.4 million lives. ... That is one child vaccinated every two seconds for five years. It is one child's life saved every two minutes. That is what the money that the British taxpayer is putting in will give.

For Gates, who has long made vaccine development and distribution a keystone of his charity's work, the economics of vaccines are simply too good to pass off. Vaccines are "magic," as Gates said in a British interview on Sunday:

They are very inexpensive, they can protect you for your entire life, so diseases like smallpox that used to kill millions are completely gone because of the vaccine. It's the greatest thing that ever happened in human health. We need to get them out to people and invent some more.

That includes diseases that have yet to be tamed by vaccines, including malaria, which kills nearly a million people a year, mostly African children. Gates and others have worked hard to reduce that death toll through bed nets, the development of new anti-malarial drugs and other on-the-ground interventions. But a vaccine that would protect against malaria for life ? as the smallpox vaccine did, which led to the eradication of that horror ? would be a home run for health.

GAVI has been criticized by some relief groups, including Oxfam and Doctors Without Borders, for being too close to the pharmaceutical industry and not doing enough to push for cheaper vaccines. (Two representatives from drug companies sit on GAVI's 27-member board.) From the Wall Street Journal:

Mr. Gates praised Glaxo's recent decision to cut the price of its rotavirus vaccine for GAVI by 67%, to $5 for a full course of shots. But others have criticized the prices Glaxo and Pfizer are charging GAVI for pneumococcal vaccine, which protects against pneumonia and meningitis. The companies are getting $7 a shot for the first 20% of the shots they deliver, and $3.50 a shot for the remainder. A child needs three shots to be fully immunized. The companies defend their prices, saying they represent a big discount on the prices charged in Western countries.

GAVI's critics have a legitimate gripe. If vaccines are really going to be distributed to every part of the world that needs them, they'll need to get cheaper ? and as one of the biggest purchasers of vaccines in the world, GAVI could push for lower prices. But that doesn't change the essential fact that the developed world should do all it can to ensure that vaccination really does become universal, rather than just the province of those who have the luxury of not needing them.

How to snag an exit row seat on your favorite airline (Airfarewatchdog.com)

By George Hobica

Airfarewatchdog.com

Every now and then, we get a note from one of our subscribers that goes something like this: Hey guys ? what's the secret to getting an exit row seat? I really wanted one on my last flight but had no luck.

More than ever, the answer that depends on which airline you're asking about. And if you have to ask, you probably aren't going to get one. Not without spending some money, anyway.

In this day and age, with airlines increasingly less inclined to giving away things they can spin into revenue, some are treating the more spacious exit row seats (which usually have more than 6 inches of spare room to wiggle around in) like gold.

Want one on Virgin America? Here, the roomier seats ? 38 inch pitch vs. the regular 32 inch ? are thrown into a category known as "Main Cabin Select." Sounds nice, right. Don't get excited. For that tiny bit of extra space, you're paying. How much? Well, on an upcoming flight from Los Angeles to San Francisco, coach seats are $89 one-way. For Main Cabin Select? $190.

Why so much? It's the same (rather flimsy) seat, spaced just a little further away from the one in front of it. Virgin will argue that they offer the Select passengers priority check-in and boarding, unlimited food, drink and entertainment. But can you consume $100 worth of free stuff on an hour-long flight to San Francisco? That's a lot of ham sandwiches and little bottles of scotch.

Then, on the other hand, you have airlines using using the promise of unfettered access to these tiny Shangri-Las as a carrot to lure their frequent flyers to fly more frequently. Delta used to let anyone book exit row seats any time ? now, only SkyMiles members with status (and people booking on pricey, unrestricted tickets) are permitted to do so.

Still other airlines won't even talk to you about exit rows in advance, only doling them out on the day of travel on a first-come, first-served basis.

At this point, no two airlines are alike. Got to have extra leg room? No worries ? Airfare Watchdog to the rescue, with an airline-by-airline how-to. The information on this chart was accurate when published, but with airlines changing their fee structures constantly, you can expect new ones to be added (and sometimes, old ones to be stepped up).

Top US senator urges Guantanamo for Iraqi suspects (AFP)

WASHINGTON (AFP) ? The US Senate's top Republican, Mitch McConnell, called Tuesday for two Iraqis facing terrorism charges in his home state to be shipped to the controversial Guantanamo Bay detention facility.

"Get these men out of Kentucky. Send them to Guantanamo where they belong. Get these terrorists out of the civilian system and out of our backyards and give them the justice they deserve," said the Republican minority leader.

Waad Ramadan Alwan and his cousin Mohanad Shareef Hammadi have pleaded not guilty to 23 terrorism charges, but could face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

The two men were arrested after a lengthy and elaborate sting operation in which they allegedly schemed to ship missiles, guns and money to their home country for use in attacks on US troops, according to the US Justice Department.

"We are prosecuting these two alleged terrorists in federal court because it is the most proven method for keeping our country safe," countered a spokesman for the department's national security division, Dean Boyd.

McConnell, a frequent and forceful critic of President Barack Obama's stalled efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay facility, said the two suspects "are foreign fighters -- unlawful enemy combatants who should be treated as such."

"Sending them to Gitmo is the only way to ensure that they will not enjoy all the rights and privileges of US citizens. Sending them to Gitmo is the only way we can be certain there won't be retaliatory attacks in Kentucky," he said.

"Sending them to Gitmo is the only way we can prevent Kentuckians from having to cover the cost and having to deal with the disturbances and disruptions that would come with a civilian trial. And sending them to Gitmo is the best way to ensure that they get what they deserve," he said.

"Since 9/11, there have been hundreds of defendants convicted in our federal court system of terrorism or terrorism-related violations. In none of these cases has a judicial district suffered retaliatory attacks," said Boyd.

"The successful investigation, arrests, and interrogation in this case show the effectiveness of our intelligence and law enforcement authorities in bringing terrorists to justice and preventing them from harming the American people," said the spokesman.

"Abandoning those proven methods would do nothing but risk the safety of the American people," he added.

The case raised questions about the US government's screening practices given that Alwan's fingerprints were found on an unexploded roadside bomb in Iraq and registered in a Department of Defense database long before he was granted refugee status.

The United States has since identified and corrected "specific gaps" in the vetting process and has rescreened refugee applicants, a Department of Homeland security official who declined to be named said after Alwan's arrest.

Yanks Hold Hit Parade Without Home Run; Outburst Recalls Bernie Williams? Rookie Season

The Yankees rapped out 18 hits in yesterday?s 9-2 victory over the Indians, but not one wound up leaving the ballpark. It was only the 14th time all season that the Yankees failed to hit a home run, which should lighten the hearts of those overly concerned with the team?s ?reliance? on the long ball.

The last time the Yankees recorded as many as 18 hits in the Bronx without sending one over the wall was the next to last game of the season in 1991 (there have been 14 occurrences since 1919). The opponent that day was also the Cleveland Indians, but this time the Tribe came out on the winning side, a paradox not uncommon for the Yankees?in that era. During the game, every starter had a hit except third baseman Tory Lovullo, but the real standout was a rookie centerfielder named Bernie Williams.

Before his five-hit outburst against the Indians, the 23-year old Williams entered the game with an unimpressive line of .223/.334/.345. Over the final two games of the season, however, he went a combined 7-10, giving the Yankees? brain trust something to think about over the off season, while also providing fans with a glimmer of hope after one of the darkest years in franchise history.

Although Williams? flourish at the end of the year wasn?t enough to save manager Stump Merrill?s job, it very well could have rescued him from being traded. During that winter, the young center fielder?s name was bandied about in trade rumors, but GM Gene Michael and new manager Buck Showalter decided to stick with the talented prospect, a decision that would pay countless dividends over the rest of his 16-year career.

On four?other occasions, Williams would match his career-high of five hits, but the initial accomplishment was the most unique. Not only was it the first glimpse of what the talented switch hitter could accomplish, but the event also had historic (albeit mostly anecdotal) significance. With his five hits, Williams joined Joe DiMaggio and Mel Stottlemyre as the only Yankees? rookies to accomplish the feat (since then, Shane Spencer and Brett Gardner have added their names to that list). What?s more, Williams also became only the fourth batter, and first non-pitcher, in franchise history to record five hits from the ninth slot in the batting order, a distinction that remains to this day.

Needless to say, the Yankees have come along way since 1991. Back then, fans would have been clamoring for home runs, especially in an 18-hit game, but these days, scoring runs without the benefit of a long ball is viewed as a moral victory. Although it seems silly to assign added virtue to a game in which the Yankees? offense is able to thrive without hitting a home run, any event that helps provide perspective while recalling memories of a franchise great like Williams is a welcomed occurrence.

US activists prepare to break Israel?s blockade on Gaza Alex Kane The Electronic Intifada 10 June 2011

ISN'T THIS WONDERFUL ---A statement from America. This is what has been so needed. Israeli soldiers have believed that Americans were supportive of their imprisonment of the Palestinians. A couple people missing from the list of passengers is Norman Finkelstein and Noam Chomsky. Who knows, maybe they will decide to go.

"The event featured Ann Wright, a former US army colonel who resigned from her State Department post in 2003 to protest the Iraq war, and Adam Shapiro, a co-founder of the International Solidarity Movement. Wright, who had just described her experience on board the US-flagged Challenger boat that was part of the international Gaza Freedom Flotilla, gave the answer: organize a boat filled with American passengers and join the next flotilla to break the blockade."

"Wright?s idea was met with thunderous applause, and activist Laurie Arbeiter proposed two names for the boat: The Audacity of Hope and Dreams From My (Palestinian) Father, based on US President Barack Obama?s memoirs. The former name was chosen".

"Nearly a year later, final preparations are underway for the next big flotilla to Gaza, which is scheduled to occur in late June. The US Boat to Gaza will take part in the largest planned fleet yet, with an estimated 1,000 passengers from an array of countries collaborating to break Israel?s blockade."

"Solidarity activists say that because the US is Israel?s chief economic, military and diplomatic backer, it?s crucial to have US citizens challenge the blockade."

?It?s precisely because of the horrendous role that the US government has played literally for decades now that people inside this country need to have strong voices? against the blockade, said Leslie Cagan, coordinator for The Audacity of Hope and longtime anti-war activist. An estimated fifty passengers, including Wright, will sail with The Audacity of Hope, which will join at least ten other ships to sail to Gaza in an attempt to break the Israeli naval blockade. ?It?s the role of those not in danger to help those in danger, and the Palestinians are in danger,? Wright told The Electronic Intifada. ?We can?t let [Israel?s] violence stop us from being with the people of Palestine.?

"Other passengers on the boat besides Wright include Alice Walker, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author; Hedy Epstein, an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor; Medea Benjamin of CODEPINK; and former CIA analyst Ray McGovern."

Why is this inappropriate?
